  4. 4. Conquering NAMM: Get In, Get Gear, Get Connected Guitar Teacher Reviews Presents: Conquering NAMM: Get In, Get in, Get Gear, Get Connected Page: 4 What is NAMM? Lots of musicians year after year try to get a coveted badge into the NAMM conventions, either in Anaheim in the winter or Nashville in the summer. If you don’t know what NAMM is, then you can read more about it at their website http://namm.org. In a nutshell NAMM is a convention much like a home or boat show, only for musical instruments. Musicians gather for it because not only can they shop for the latest gear, get deals and endorsement but they also get to network with other musicians from around the world and industry types. If you have tried but not gotten you then you know how difficult it can be to obtain a badge. Badges are not sold, rather companies that have memberships with the NAMM organization are allotted a specific amount of badges.

  6. 6. Conquering NAMM: Get In, Get Gear, Get Connected Guitar Teacher Reviews Presents: Conquering NAMM: Get In, Get in, Get Gear, Get Connected Page: 6 Tips on Getting a NAMM Badge NAMM badges are for members, their employees and guests only. You cannot purchase badges to get into NAMM. You must have a connection to a business or individual that has access to the badges. The following are a few ways you can go about accomplishing the task of obtaining a NAMM badge. Start a Relationship with an exhibitor The best way to get a badge is to get an exhibitor to give you one willingly. It’s really not as hard as you might think. How you can start is first by obtaining the 2012 Show Directory from NAMM’s website. Take this list and begin by finding an exhibitor that has the type of merchandise you use. Once you find the product or service you’d like to request a badge from, next contact the company and ask who the Artist Rep is. Speak to this person and tell them how much you love their products but you were so upset you didn’t get to see them at NAMM because your last sponsor dried up (or something similar to elicit sympathy yet also sound credible, as if you’ve been to the convention). Work at NAMM You can sometimes win odd jobs at NAMM. Cute girls can find spokesmodel employment through various resources where modeling jobs are normally posted. Cute girl or not, you can always contact an exhibitor and ask if they need help with their booth setup, take down or operation. Networking Another way to get a badge is to find someone who already gets them from a manufacturer and just simply ask them if they will help provide one to you
  7. 7. Conquering NAMM: Get In, Get Gear, Get Connected Guitar Teacher Reviews Presents: Conquering NAMM: Get In, Get in, Get Gear, Get Connected Page: 7 also. This is a very easy way to get a badge, that is is you know someone right now that has one. If you don’t know anyone right now, try searching resources like Facebook, Harmony Central forums or even Myspace for conversations of people mentioning NAMM and strike up a conversation (or join the current one) with one of the people and see if they have a membership. Get your own membership This is tricky because you have to qualify to be a member of NAMM. Regular musicians don’t qualify; you must be of a specific business model that provides tangible goods or services to the music community. There are different membership types depending on your business structure. Typically the types of businesses are: • Service Oriented (Recording Studios, production houses) • Product Manufacturers (guitars, sheet music, drum kits, etc.) Buy a Badge? Definitely NOT. This is a BIG no-no and can get you into a lot of trouble, regardless whether you are the seller or purchaser. In the past it was easy to get away with passing a badge onto someone else, since then NAMM has made it much more difficult to get away with this. Penalties for selling and buying badges include not only expulsion from the event but also potential criminal charges as well. Caution!!! You might find individuals selling badges online. DO NOT patronize them and buy a badge. If you get caught you will be expelled from the event and not allowed back in. The NAMM website further indicates you risk civil or criminal prosecution if you buy or sell badges.
  8. 8. Conquering NAMM: Get In, Get Gear, Get Connected Guitar Teacher Reviews Presents: Conquering NAMM: Get In, Get in, Get Gear, Get Connected Page: 8 NAMM Survival Guide The following are some tips to help make your NAMM visit more enjoyable. There will be a lot of people there, which can mean a lot of hassles. Here’s some tips to get by those, and find some sweet stuff! Hotels Where you stay will have a large effect on your experience at NAMM. If you are on a budget you will find that you will deal with more hassles getting to and from the convention center and the hotels as they cheaper ones are further away. If you have the cash, you will want to book a room at a hotel close to the convention. If you do plan to book a hotel it is very advisable you do so NOW. Rooms fill up very quickly and you will likely be left without a good room if you don’t book ahead of time. Now that isn’t to say you cant find something last minute, in fact it’s recommended you try The Hilton the day of the show as there will be some cancellations. Featured Hotel: The Hilton This is the most popular hotel to stay at. You will spend at least $200 a night to stay during NAMM. This is the hotel everyone parties at, performs at or goes to see a show. If you want to network, and if you want the convenience of being staying right in the middle of the action then it is recommended you stay a the Hilton. Tip: Ask for a room that is on the courtyard level, these rooms see the most party action.

  11. 11. Conquering NAMM: Get In, Get Gear, Get Connected Guitar Teacher Reviews Presents: Conquering NAMM: Get In, Get in, Get Gear, Get Connected Page: 11 Transportation Parking can get pretty expensive if you don’t know where to look. Depending on how much travelling you will be doing, just going on foot and taxi may be the more affordable option as opposed to renting a car. Getting to destinations like the Grove isn’t far so you will be safe if you don’t plan to go into LA with not obtaining a rental car. If you do drive, make sure you try to park in the NAMM designated lots or in one of the Disney lots. This year’s NAMM 2013 the parking rates were $12. Several private lots were charging $20, so pay attention and don’t get tricked into thinking you are getting a better deal parking at a private lot because you actually won’t get a better deal than parking at the convention or Disney’s lot. One of the biggest pieces of advice that can be given to anyone who is not staying in a hotel next to NAMM is to get there very early. Parking lots will fill up by 1:00pm and it will be nearly impossible to find parking after this time. If you expect to get there later, you will be better to plan on parking a couple of miles away and take a cab in. By noon the streets will be moving very slow if not a stand still so a lot of extra time to make it if you have a deadline. Entertainment There is always a show at the Grove in Anaheim, your task is to find out who is secretly handing out badges? Keep your eye out and see if anyone walking around has a badge that looks like a guest backstage pass and if it’s for the Grove, ask where they got it. Typically the big guys like any of the major guitar manufacturers. In 2012 Ernie Ball and have handed out passes to their 50th anniversary, and you also could get passes for the Grove at the Dean booth.
