What is ORCID?
It represents a standard unique author identifier that
distinguishes you from every other researcher and,
through integration in key research workflows such
as manuscript and grant submission, supports
automated linkages between you and your
professional activities ensuring that your work is

How did we want to use ORCID?
For us it was important to integrate in such a way
so that we could transfer the value of ORCID to
our institution and researchers. Important here
was ease of use, seamless.
We needed a way to create and link ORCID records
from researchers at the same time. By doing this
ending up with the info needed to interact with an
ORCID record. By doing this it is only one step for
We needed a way to link our DSPACE repo to
ORCID in order to add items to ORCID records.
We wanted to add an ORCID link to the
researcher’s profile wherever we were using it.
We needed a searchable backend registry to link
ORCID identifiers to university numbers.

We needed a way to read the info from ORCID and
add that to the profile of our researchers.
We also wanted to connect our identity
management system so that other systems could
use the info. Also integrate our CAS as SSO
solution on ORCID.
We wanted to update affiliation info on ORCID
We wanted to make the ORCID identifier an
alternative login id. This could be handy if the
researcher still wants to login to some resources
needed when not active at institution anymore.
This links with life cycle management of login
We needed a place where we could suggest
changes for researchers to their ORCID record
(Keywords, bio info, affiliations etc.) apart from
the automatic updates we planned.
We wanted a researcher to be able to search for
other researchers from within our own
We wanted a researcher to be able to view ORCID
records from within our own application.
We wanted an admin user interface to setup
everything and make changes if needed.

ORCID integration elements
This is all the elements of the integration. We decided
to build an application (NWU Manuscript) that is free
standing from all our other systems and just integrate
it with the other systems.

With the current NWU Manuscript we
achieved the following:
Make it easier for researchers to create an ORCID
Link the ORCID identifiers in our backend system.
This makes it possible to re-use the information
wherever it is needed like workflows.
Make it possible to use the information to display
ORCID link with other profile information of
researcher. (Automatically in registry,
Manually/Script on web profile)
Update ORCID record with affiliation information.
Push items from our DSPACE instance to ORCID
record as works.
