Frederick County Case Study

Set-and-forget administration. No IT involvement in pulling user reports or whitelisting. Google single sign-on leads to seamless user experience. Cloud-based solution more stable than appliances. Google SSO Business Impact Customer Name: Frederick County Public Schools Location: Virginia School district in Virginia uses Securly’s cloud-based solution for seamless Google SSO, Delegated Administration and Parent Portal. Any device. Anywhere. Secure. The public schools at Frederick County in Virginia have 13,000 enrolled students and 2,000 staff members across the district. All students from grades 3 to 12 each get a Chromebook to help them with schoolwork. Ken Melnikoff is the head of the school district’s IT department, which is composed of 40 employees under him. Before switching to Securly, Ken worked with other web-filtering solutions to manage the district’s online environment, including Cymphonix and Barracuda. Both services failed to support the district’s needs due to a number of limitations: With the recurring problems they were experiencing from their current web-filtering partners, Ken decided to look for alternatives that could best handle the district's requirements. The choices came down to Lightspeed and Securly. The district decided to go with Securly because of two factors – cost and easy SSO in a Google environment. With Securly’s ability to seamlessly authenticate through Google’s Single Sign On solution, students needed to verify their accounts only once to access the school’s network. 1.855.SECURLY www.securly.com

For the first time ever, we are able to let parent's know on a live basis what is happening in the classroom. How cool is that?" Securly for Parents Securly automatically sends parents free email reports of their child’s online activities on school-owned devices. Seamless Authentication through Google SSO “Set-and-forget” Administration – giving school staff direct access to reports Over the years, the district’s SSO needs have changed dramatically with the move from Active Directory to Google Apps for Education. Because of these changes, students had a hard time accessing their profiles from their Chromebooks whenever they forgot their Active Directory username and password. With Securly’s ability to seamlessly authenticate through Google’s Single Sign-On solution, students needed to verify their accounts only once to access the school’s network. This saved Ken and the school staff ample time with implementation. From an IT perspective, Ken asks himself two questions to establish web filter usability: With Securly’s pioneering functionality of delegating whitelisting to teachers, Ken found a suitable partner that makes it easier for staff members to access reports they would normally request IT for. Securly’s Delegated Administration functionality allows principals and guidance counselors to pull user reports regularly without having to rely on IT staff to do it for them. This feature eliminates IT involvement from day-to-day web filtering administration to provide school staff with direct access to information they need in an instant. Securly is a leading provider of cloud-based web filtering for schools and parental controls for homes. For more information, visit www.securly.com.
