Explaining Barthes theory

Symbolic code
• A symbol is an image that has been used
repeatedly in the past to represent a
certain image or idea.
• For example, a red rose could symbolises
love and romance whereas a black rose
can symbolise death and darkness.
Semantic code
• Part of a media product that we as audience know has a deeper
meaning and hidden meaning.
For example semantic code is used in this movie poster, we can see
the main colours are black, red and white.
Black is used here to show loneliness and to show that the person
in the middle is alone in darkness, and since it pichdark we as
audience assume its night time which adds to the theme of the
movie.
Red is usually used to symbolise blood, danger and mystery. In this
case they decided to use it as a sign of danger, since there's a skull
it may be seen as a sign of a warning which could be "stay out or
you'll end up like this"
White is simply used to contast from the black and to make the
writing clear and readable
Proairetic / action
codes
Hermeneutic / enigma codes
• Any mystery of the media text. this makes the
audience want to carry on reading to find out what
they have seen. Eg when magazines put "read more
on page 34" they do this so that the audience feel the
need to carry on reading
"Kims new world" that statement is vague and not very
clear which makes people want to read on because they
want to know exactly what she means by "new world"

  • 3. Symbolic code • A symbol is an image that has been used repeatedly in the past to represent a certain image or idea. • For example, a red rose could symbolises love and romance whereas a black rose can symbolise death and darkness.
  • 4. Semantic code • Part of a media product that we as audience know has a deeper meaning and hidden meaning.
