  6. 6. a name in Greek mythology for the Earth Gaia
  7. 7. a complex entity involving the Earth's biosphere, atmosphere, oceans, and soil; the totality constituting a feedback or cybernetic system which seeks an optimal physical and chemical environment for life on this planet. James Lovelock defined it as:

  9. 9. 3 EVIDENCES THAT EARTH REGULATES ITSELF 1. Surface Temperature – has remained constant despite the energy increase by the Sun 2. Atmospheric Composition – remains constant even though it should be unstable 3. Ocean Salinity – remains constant despite the fact that river salts should have raised the ocean salinity much higher

  12. 12. Come to think of it…. Mass extinctions Ice ages
  13. 13. Is Earth Alive ? - implies that Earth is somehow “aware” of the adjustments needed in its system to maintain a state of balance – that Earth is a living, breathing, and thinking, entity. Earth as a supra-organism
  14. 14. In relation to other issues and other fields of studies
  15. 15. ECOLOGY • Generally consider the biosphere as an ecosystem • consistent with the modern vision of global ecology, relaying the concepts of biosphere and biodiversity.
  16. 16. HISTORICAL CLIMATE CHANGE • Earth’s climate change a lot in the past 4 billion years • It could warm significantly in the future, due to atmospheric pollution, and it could have become more extreme.
  17. 17. THE PLANET DID NOT OVERHEAT EVEN THOUGH THE SUN HAS INCREASED LUMINOSITY OVER THE PAST 4 BILLION YEARS. BUT WHY? • Lovelock and Margulis argued that life solved this problem • Warmer earth resulted to greater plankton production  remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere • Plankton’s remains sank in the ocean floor  remove carbon dioxide from the system • Warm planet more rainmore erosion and nutrient runoff to the oceanplankton growth
  18. 18. ATTITUDE TOWARDS THE ENVIRONMENT • Influence the minds of many people that the environment and human beings are one and that we don’t do things to the environment but rather we are a part of it. • Shifted the most thinking from egocentrism to “enlightened self-interest”
  19. 19. • 1981 – CoEvolution Quarterly article "Is Nature Motherly“ • nothing in the genome could provide the feedback mechanisms Gaia theory proposed • the Gaia hypothesis was an unscientific theory W. Ford Doolittle
  20. 20. • 1982 - “The Extended Phenotype” • organisms could not act in concert Richard Dawkins
  21. 21. • Lovelock had not presented one particular theory, but rather four separate, but closely linked, hypotheses: 1.Co-evolutionary Gaia 2.Homeostatic Gaia 3.Geophysical Gaia 4.Optimizing Gaia Dr. James Kirchner
  22. 22. • joined Lovelock in the effort of fleshing out the initial hypothesis into scientifically proven concepts • objected the personification of Gaia and stressed it is "not an organism", but "an emergent property of interaction among organisms". • Gaia - "the series of interacting ecosystems that compose a single huge ecosystem at the Earth's surface. Period." Dr. Lynn Margulis
