Windows 2007<br />Used to run Application Programs<br />Word<br />Excel<br />Access<br />PowerPoint<br />User Interface<br />Combination of hardware and software to communicate and control the computer<br />Goal is to be user-friendly<br />GUI is user interface that uses graphics or icons to communicate with user and computer<br />
  3. 3. Welcome Screen<br />Shows names of users<br />Clicking user and keying password begins the “logging on” process<br />Clicking the “Turn off computer” at bottom shuts down the computer<br />

Windows 2007 User Interface<br />To communicate with operating system, you can use a “mouse”<br />Wireless or cable-connected device<br />Common tasks are pointing and clicking<br />Pointing<br />Move mouse across flat surface until resting on item of choice<br />Clicking<br />Pressing and releasing the primary mouse button (left mouse button)<br />Must point to an item before clicking it<br />

Windows 2007 Folders<br />Folders<br />Named location on computer where files are stored<br />Each is identified by folder icon and folder name<br />Adding a folder to desktop or storage device<br />Right-click on desktop<br />Click new<br />Click folder <br />Key name for folder<br />Drag (hold left mouse button down) and place folder in location of choice<br />

Window 2007 Desktop Icon<br />Opening a desktop icon<br />Double-click(press and release the left mouse twice quickly while on the icon)<br />Once displayed, Minimize or Maximize window<br />The title bar of the window displayed contains the minimize and maximize buttons<br />Minimize –no longer active window, but still open – title on task bar at bottom of screen<br />Maximize –enlarging the window so it fits the entire screen<br />Restore – replaces the maximize button and puts the window in original size before maximizing<br />Close –click the X on the title bar of the window – removes it from the task bar<br />

Windows 2007 – Moving/sizing windows<br />Moving a window by dragging<br />Drag – hold down left mouse button, move to desired location, then release button<br />Sizing by dragging – point to any border or corner of window until 2-headed arrow appears, then pull upward, downward or side-to-side to enlarge window<br />Scrolling window – to view information that is not visible in the window<br />Click scroll arrows<br />Click scroll bar<br />Drag scroll box<br />

Windows 2007 – Expanding/Collapsing<br />Expanding an area of a window<br />Double down arrow is displayed when collapsed<br />Click to “open” the area to see all available features/options<br />Collapsing an area of a window<br />Double up arrow is displayed when expanded<br />Click to “close” the area so that only titles are displayed<br />

Windows 2007 – Keyboard Shortcuts<br />Keyboard shortcuts<br />Pressing a single key (such as ENTER)<br />Pressing and holding down one key and pressing a second key (CTRL+ESC)<br />Windows XP HELP<br />Press the F1 key <br />Display Start Menu<br />Hold down the CTRL key and press the ESC key (CTRL+ESC)<br />

Windows 2007 – using flashdrive<br />Plug USB flash drive into USB port on computer<br />Drive name may be G: or F: depending on which of the two ports you place the Flashdrive<br />Creating Folder on Flashdrive<br />Right-click on whitespace after opening the flashdrive<br />Choose NEW, then Folder<br />Name the folder BCA1st, BCA2nd or BCA3rd<br />Open the folder<br />Create a new folder following the first 3 bullets except give the folder your name<br />Create a new folder again in your folder with name of the chapter (ex. Wordch1)<br />Save all files created in Word Ch1 in this folder<br />

Windows 2007-thawspace<br />Create a folder just like the folder on your flashdrive on Thawspace<br />Follow same directions as on Flashdrive except open Thawspace through My Computer<br />Remember to save to both Flashdrive and Thawspace each time you save a file.<br />This is your BACKUP – extra storage location in case one location becomes corrupt or file is lost<br />

Windows 2007 – protect files<br />When saving files, password protect so that no one can use your files except you<br />To password protect each file, click Office Button at top left corner of screen. <br />Choose Save As to first save the file<br />Choose Prepare, then choose Encrypt Document from the submenu<br />Key your password, then confirm the password again (use your student ID)<br />You will always need to key password to open document each time you use it<br />

Windows 2007 – file management<br />Displaying contents of a folder<br />Double-click on folder to reveal its contents<br />To move or copy folder or files within, right-click and select files or more than one file by holding down the CTRL key<br />Choose move or copy from the side menu OR<br />DRAG the file to its destination <br />Renaming a file<br />Right-click on the folder or file, then choose rename from the shortcut menu<br />Key the new name of the folder or file while the old name is selected<br />
