  • In the past couple of years, my students have done what I would say is very rudimentary GIS. I'd have students research where cocoa is grown and who much is exported from those growing regions. They would create tables in Excel, then import them into Geocommons, and create basic choropleth maps. I'd then have them research data on cocoa imports- what countries import the raw cocoa. We would then compare the maps to see the difference (grown in the tropics of Africa, Central America, Indonesia) and imported to Western European countries and the USA for the manufacture of chocolate. We would then create a third map of who consumed the chocolate- basically countries in the Northern Hemisphere and Australia and New Zealand. Along the way we could look at per capita income in Western Africa and chocolate-producing and chocolate-consuming countries to have a discussion about that. Their analysis really looking at maps, comparing/contrasting them, and making conclusions- more spatial analysis. 3 maps – where is it grown, where chocolate is manufactured, who consumes itAudrey
