How to take care of your front yard garden in falling seasons
How to Take Care of Your Front Yard Garden in Falling SeasonsOctober is a month of change. Between the temperatures dropping, the sun setting earlier, and the leaves turning into new colors, change is all around us. Its amazing how quicklythe days start to grow shorter and nightfall creeps in earlier and earlier. It is an excitingtime of year, watching all the leaves change color. You will notice in the beginning ofOctober, subtle leaves changes, but by the end of the month, all the foliage will be vibrantin fall colors. Why Leaves Change ColorThe amount and brilliance of the colors that develop this autumn season are related toweather conditions that occur before and during the time the chlorophyll in the leaves isdwindling. Temperature and moisture are the main influences.A succession of warm, sunny days and cool, crisp but not freezing nights seems to bringabout the most spectacular color displays.During these days, lots of sugars are produced in the leaf but the cool nights and thegradual closing of veins going into the leaf prevent these sugars from moving out. Withthese conditions, lots of sugar and lots of light-spur production of the brilliant anthocyaninpigments, which tint reds, purples, and crimson. Because carotenoids are always present inleaves, the yellow and gold colors remain constant from year to year.Whats in BloomThere are still plenty of plants and annuals and flowers that are blooming this month.Knockout roses are still blooming, the hydrangeas are still pushing, Sedum Autumn Joy,Lantana, Viburnum, and fall annual are currently in bloom. Autumnal Grasses plumes arecurrently out right now, which is the nicest part of the seasonal grasses. What Wildlife it AttractsDue to the dew that is slowly beginning to arrive, and the change in temperatures in yoursoil, Grubs will start to become prevalent. If you start noticing brown patches in yourlawn, it is possible that it is due to Grubs. Grubs - the Japanese Beetle, burrow in theground and lay eggs this time of year. It becomes a vicious cycle that you will need tomaintain. What Should Be DoneAs summer turns into fall, the soil temperatures drop. This causes and dictates almost allthe changes we see.
