  5. 5. Five-Year Review: Sites 1, 22, 26, and 28 Sites 1 and 22 Landfills Findings • Landfill remedies are currently protective – Landfill covers are functioning as intended – Groundwater contaminant concentrations stable – Landfill gas concentrations below threshold at landfill boundaries Issue • Need to complete institutional controls Follow-up actions • Incorporate institutional controls into NASA Ames land use planning documents 5
  6. 6. Five-Year Review: Sites 1, 22, 26, and 28 Site 26 East-side Aquifers Treatment System (EATS) • Record of Decision 1996 Site 26 Remedy • Groundwater extraction and treatment • Groundwater monitoring • Institutional controls 6
  7. 7. Five-Year Review: Sites 1, 22, 26, and 28 Site 26 East-side Aquifers Treatment System (EATS) • EATS operational 1999 to 2003 • 2003 to present EATS turned off to evaluate alternative treatment methods Findings • Site 26 remedy is currently protective – Although EATS has remained off, the groundwater contaminant plumes are stable or decreasing Issues • Need to complete institutional controls • EATS inefficient and ineffective treatment method Follow-up Actions • Incorporate institutional controls in NASA Ames land use planning documents • Continue implementing pilot test 7
  8. 8. Five-Year Review: Sites 1, 22, 26, and 28 Site 28 West-side Aquifers Treatment System (WATS) • Record of Decision – In 1993, Navy adopted EPA 1989 MEW ROD Site 28 Remedy • Groundwater extraction and treatment • Remediation of unsaturated soil • Groundwater monitoring 8

Five-Year Review: Sites 1, 22, 26, and 28 Site 28 West-side Aquifers Treatment System (WATS) • WATS operating 1998 to present • Evaluating alternative treatment methods Findings • Site 28 remedy is currently protective – WATS is functioning as intended – Groundwater contaminant plumes are stable or decreasing – No short-term health risks – NASA implementing mitigation measures for vapor intrusion 9
  10. 10. Five-Year Review: Sites 1, 22, 26, and 28 Site 28 West-side Aquifers Treatment System (WATS) Issues • Potential actions needed to ensure long-term protectiveness from vapor intrusion • The challenge of treating onsite and upgradient groundwater VOC sources Follow-up Actions • Incorporate ICs related to vapor intrusion in NASA Ames internal directive & Incorporate relevant measures of EPA vapor intrusion pathway study in NASA Ames construction permit process for buildings • Continue to implement pilot test and to participate in a regional strategy to address groundwater contamination 10
