1. Church Rites during the Departure of the Pope
1- In the presence of the Bishop what do we say before the
bishop? (Kesmarout, Ni savev tero and Akchi)?
In the presence of a bishop, there will be some changes.

2- What are the rites of the Prime and Vespers?
The rite of Prime and Vespers Raising of Incense is almost
stays the same. In the verses of cymbals, if a bishop is
present, then the verse for the pope is not to be chanted,
but rather the following one for the bishop:
Ten]ho ;erok ;w|U|c |Y|c : eyrek;areh ;e;pwnq
;ndikeoc : abba (...) (pim/tropolit/c/
pi;epickopoc) matajrof hijen nef;yronoc.
The Litany of the Departed (in Vespers) is said as normal, no
addition. If the 5 litanies, after the Gospel, are prayed
audibly, the response for the one for the Fathers should be
changed as follows:
Twbh ;ejen ;t'u,/ ;mpenmakarioc ;niwt
ettai;/out abba (...) hina ;nte ~P[oic ~Vnou]
3. ];mton nac qen kenf ;nnenio] |e|y|u Abraam nem
Icaak nem Iakwb qen piparadicoc ;nte ;pounof :
;ntef,a nennobi nan ;ebol.
3- What do we say in the Hetens?
Sing the following verse instead of the original one:
Hiten nieu,/ ;nte peniwt ettai/out
;nar,/;ereuc papa abba (...) : P_ ari;hmot nan
;mpi,w ;ebol ;nte nennobi.
4- Do we say Pie Ehmot Ghar?
In regular liturgies, don’t say it; but if a bishop is present
chant it as follows:
Pi;hmot gar ;mPen_ I/couc Pi,rictoc ef;eswpi
nem pek;agion pneuma pa_ ;niwt ettai;/out
(;mm/tropolit/c / ;n;epickopoc) abba (...).
5- Are we supposed to say “Shere pinishty” in the praxis
response or just according to the season?
No, don’t chant it. It is for the pope when he is present, not
even to bishops; so just say the response according to the
season.
6- What do we say in the Adam Aspasmoz (the last verse)?
Say the Aspazmos as you do in the regular liturgy, but skip the
verse for the pope. If a bishop is present, you may skip his verse
as well or say the following:
Ten]ho ;erok ;w|U|c |Y|c : eyrek;areh ;e;pwnq
peniwt ;ndikeoc abba (...) (pim/tropolit/c/
pi;epickopoc) matajrof hijen pef;yronoc.
4. 7- Long Tarhem, does the deacon include the name or not?
Yes, the Diptych is supposed to be prayed and in the deacon’s
response the name of the departed pope should be mentioned.
8- In the feasts, should we sing long Espateer and Tob Hena?
If a bishop is present, then you may sing “Espatees” with skipping
the verse for the pope and sing the part for the bishop. If a bishop
is not there, do not sing it at all even if there is a feast. As for
“long Tobh Heena”, do not chant it.
9- Hymns when a bishop is present like (shenouda) to makario
and E Aghapie; when singing those what do we do?
These hymns are specific for the pope when he is present; so do
not sing them at all.
10- What should we say in the 3 major litanies and the 7 minor
ones for the Litany of the Fathers?
- 01
For the 3 major litanies, the 7 minor litanies, and the Diptych the
following litany should be said (replacing the one for the Fathers):
Priest:
Remember, O Lord, the soul of our father the
Patriarch Abba (…).
Deacon:
Pray for the soul of our blessed and honored
father Abba (…) that the Lord God may
repose it in the bosom of our holy fathers
Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the paradise of
joy, and forgive us our sins.
Congregation:
Lord have mercy.
5. Priest:
Graciously repose it with your saints. Grant
to appoint for us a good shepherd to
shepherd Your people in purity and
righteousness.
If this prayer is said instead of the Long Litany of the Fathers, the
priest continues with: “and all the orthodox bishops…”, but if it is
said instead of the Short Litany of the Fathers, the priest
continues with: “and those who rightly handle the word of truth
with him”. For the Diptych, the priest may continues with “Those,
O Lord, whose souls You have taken…” or with the Diptych of the
liturgy of Saint Cyril “Those, O Lord, and everyone whose names
we have mentioned…”.
11- What about Good Friday confession of the thief (the last
verse)?
During Passion Week, in the Daytime or Nighttime Litanies, the
verse for the pope is replaced with the following:
Pray for the repose of the soul of our blessed
and honored father the archbishop Abba (…)
that Jesus our God may repose it in the
paradise of joy, appoint for us a good
shepherd, and forgive us our sins.
As for the Confession of the Thief that is chanted in Good Friday,
the last verse would be as follows:
We ask Him who was crucified on the wood
of the cross, shed His divine blood for us, and
trampled death by His death to forgive us
our sins; and repose the soul of our father
the pope and patriarch Abba (…), and keep
6. for us the life of my fathers who are gathered
here in this church from the youngest to the
oldest. Say all of you.
12- What should we do with the last verse of the
Commemoration of Saints in Midnight Praise?
Skip it, don’t say it.
