1. 1. Gilmore Girls Family Collage
Sarah Foss- CMS 332 April 10th, 2011
2. 2. Lorelai Gilmore
On the television show Lorelai Gilmore is a single mother who is raising her daughter Lorelai “Rory” Gilmore who she gave birth to at age 16. Lorelai and Rory live in the quaint town of Stars Hollow, Connecticut.
The show focuses on their mother daughter relationship, their lives and relationships in Stars Hollow, and their relationship with Lorelai’s parents.
3. 3. Rory Gilmore
Rory Gilmore is the daughter of Lorelai Gilmore and Christopher Hayden.
The show portrays Rory as she is growing up, from high school to college and along the way focuses on her three relationships with boyfriends Dean, Jess, and Logan, and her Korean best friend Lane.
4. 4. Lorelai & Rory’s Communication
Lorelai and Rory have a special bond, because Lorelai raised Rory as a single mom, they are more than just mother and daughter, they are like best friends. Lorelai and Rory have there own style of communicating on the show which is often fast paced, and includes many inside jokes, movie and pop culture references. They have the type of relationship where they know each other well enough that at times they can finish each others sentences.
Click here to watch clips of their communication style!
5. 5. Luke Danes
Luke Danes is the owner of the coffee shop “Luke’s” that Lorelai and Rory visit every day. Luke has been in Rory’s life since she was a little girl and is very much the most dominant male role model in her life. He could also could be considered one of Lorelai’s best friends, and eventually becomes her love interest on the show.
6. 6. Luke’s Communication With Lorelai & Rory
Luke and Lorelai have a complicated communication style. It is flirtatious; more on Lorelai’s side than Luke’s, and Luke sometimes seems like he has little patience with Lorelai’s joking and flirtatious personality. He comes off as a little stern and no nonsense, while still giving the viewers of the show the feeling that he would and does let Lorelai get away with anything.
With Rory, Luke is very protective and interested in her life, you can tell by the way he communicates with Rory that he cares for her like she is his own daughter.
7. 7. Christopher Hayden
Christopher Hayden was Lorelai’s boyfriend when she was 16, and is Rory’s father. He lives outside of Stars Hollow, and has been in and out of Lorelai and Rory’s lives because he never really assumed the role of a father. His visits are always special and unexpected. Chris pops up multiple times throughout the duration of the show trying to re-kindle his relationship with Lorelai, and become more of a father figure to Rory.
8. 8. Chris’s Communication With Lorelai & Rory
Throughout the course of the show Chris and Lorelai have an on again off again communication style. Because they were so young when they had Rory, their timing has always been off and they can never get their relationship off the ground, although they do try to do so several times throughout the series. Chris never seems like he fully “fits” in with Lorelai and Rory’s lives.
Rory’s relationship with her father is pretty minimal, she loves him but Chris hasn’t been there for her growing up, so when he tries to act like a parent it isn’t well received from Rory, and she’s often upset with him for coming back into Lorelai’s life and messing up what she could have with Luke. Chris only plays a big part in Rory’s life when he comes into lots of money and pays for her college tuition.
9. 9. Richard & Emily Gilmore
Richard and Emily Gilmore are Lorelai’s rich white collar parents who live in Hartford, that she has never really gotten along with.
Richard and Emily had high standards for Lorelai, wanting her to attend an ivy league college, marry rich, and follow the life plan they had mapped out for her, but Lorelai always rebelled.
They didn’t approve of Lorelai not marrying Christopher when she got pregnant with Rory, and don’t quite understand Lorelai and her personality.
10. 10. Friday Night Dinners
During the majority of seven seasons of the show Rory and Lorelai are either obligated or are guilted into having Friday night dinners with Richard and Emily.
Friday night dinners are always the place where arguments or some type of chaos occurs between Lorelai and her parents because they have such different communication styles, and personalities.
11. 11. Lorelai & Emily
Because both Lorelai and her parents have stubborn personalities they are often clashing, and arguing about one thing of another.
Lorelai and Emily especially have a rollercoaster relationship, because Emily is always trying to meddle in Lorelai and Rory’s lives in ways she thinks are for the best but only end up upsetting Lorelai, and often times Rory.
12. 12. Conclusion
I think the reason that Gilmore Girls is one of my favorite television shows is because I can really relate to Lorelai and Rory’s relationship. Although my mom wasn’t a single mother, we have still become very close within our relationship, and she is like my best friend.
I think what’s most unique about this show is in fact the communication style that Lorelai and Rory have together. I think that it’s one that would be hard to find in any other television show.
