Overview about the HW building blocks for SAP Business Suite on HANA (single node)
Support was announced in November 2012 for single node Non-Production deployments on certified hardware appliances fur use with test and development systems. SAP supports VMware vSphere 5.1 with the release of SAP HANA SPS05.Limitations apply (maximum VM size, performance impact, no scale-out, limited use of VMware features) -> Check SAP note 1788665 for detailsIBM is the first and only to include this support starting with the June 2013 installation image updateThere will be no special models for virtualized SAP HANA, instead the ESXi embedded hypervisor key (internal USB) can be added to the standard models.
The SAP HANA Platform Edition can be installed inside of a VMware virtual machine starting with Service Pack Stack (SPS) 05. The SAP HANA Virtualization FAQ states that SAP allows multiple virtual machines to be installed using a concept of slots. Each slot is a virtual machine created with 10 virtual CPUs (vCPU) and 64 GB memory. The standard rules for operating system, SAP HANA Data and Log file system sizes are to be held. Due to resources taken by the VMware ESXi server itself, one slot is by SAP definition reserved as no CPU/Memory overcommitment is allowed in an SAP HANA virtual machine.Although SAP documents that it is possible to create a SAP VM slot size of 7 (70 vCPU / 448 GB Memory) or 8 (80 v/CPU / 512 GB memory), VMware restricts the total number of virtual CPUs for a single guest to 64, and this in turn, restricts the maximum SAP VM Slot size to 6 (60 vCPU / 384GB Memory).
