  2. 2. Overview Where is the research in Learning Spaces now?1 2 3 4 What are the challenges of new Learning Spaces? What are the benefits of new Learning Spaces? How does this all link into Library Learning Spaces? @santanuvasant
  3. 3. What do you understand by a learning space? @santanuvasant pollev.com/svasantpollev.com/svasant
  4. 4. Where is the research in Learning Spaces now? @santanuvasant | #bett17 Image: ELG01,Lecture Theatre, City, University of London
  5. 5. A very abridged version of research so far… In recent times it started again Oblinger (2005) and her EDUcause book There was SCALE-UP (2007), putting the teacher in the centre More recently, in the UK, we had the UCISA Learning Spaces Toolkit (2016) taking all the findings and sythesising them for a technical audience Australia has a lot of research into this area one such book is Learning Spaces in Higher Education: Positive Outcomes by Design (2008) 1 2 3 4
  6. 6. Challenges in Learning Spaces @santanuvasant | #bett17@santanuvasant Image: CC Public Domain
  7. 7. “ “…education is on the brink of being transformed through learning technologies; however, it has been on that brink for some decades now.” Professor Diana Laurillard, London Knowledge Lab, IoE, UCL (Laurillard, 2008, p1) @santanuvasant
  8. 8. Medieval Libary Spaces What do you notice? Image: Jesus College, Oxford, https://www.jesus.ox.ac.uk/about/the- fellows-library-gallery @santanuvasant pollev.com/svasantpollev.com/svasant
  9. 9. A very challenging area of educational development, but why?...Teaching was until the 1800s*, a private thing between the teacher and students… then inspections etc arrived We are moving slowly from a teacher-centred to a student-centred curriculum Structures and politics in education and technology adoption (Selwyn & Facer, 2014) are difficult to navigate – Learning Spaces involves a multi-stakeholder engagement (Estates, IT/AV, Academic Development etc) In higher education, the academic is autonomous (compared to a School teacher) 1 2 3 4 *approximately
  10. 10. “ “…In light of this apparent disparity it seems appropriate that the field of educational technology begins also to question that could be termed ‘state-of-actual’.” Professor Neil Selwyn, Monash University, Australia (2008) @santanuvasant
  11. 11. Benefits in Learning Spaces @santanuvasant CC Public Domain
  12. 12. “ … ‘Alone together’ is a communal way of working, studying individually, but amongst others, as often seen in the library” Walton and Matthews (2018). Exploring Informal Learning Space in the University: A Collaborative Approach, Routledge, London @santanuvasant
  13. 13. Being ‘Alone Together’ in Learning Spaces is important The way a library is laid out can have a big impact on the learning you can do in the space with ease The more opportunities for movement there are, the more students are in control The time students spend in libraries need mix deep focused work (alone) and collaborative spaces (together) to aid their learning journey. This video highlights this (Rutherford, 2017) Small changes in layout can give students more focus by making them comfortable 1 2 3 4 *approximately
  14. 14. Modern Library Spaces What do you notice? Image: Sainsbury Library, Oxford University @santanuvasant pollev.com/svasantpollev.com/svasant
  15. 15. What does this all mean? @santanuvasant CC Public Domain
  16. 16. It starts with designing different areas in your librariesWhat do you want your students to do in libraries? How will make best use of areas in your libraries? Have you thought of the 3 Cs of Informal Learning Design (Control, Comfort and Collaborative, as outlined in this toolkit) How will you get them to use spaces better? 1 2 3 4
  17. 17. What is one thing you have taken from this talk on Library learning spaces? @santanuvasant pollev.com/svasantpollev.com/svasant
