BACKGROUNDAudio Lingual Method (A.L.M.) is founded for thefirst time when world war II. It is specializedfor American that have to learn other foreignlanguages because of military trainingrequirement. This method is also known as“The Army Method”. Then, the term ALM wascoined by professor Nelson Brooks in 1964.
1.RepetitionThe student repeats an utterance aloud assoon as he has heard it. Example: this is thefifth month. –This is the fifth month2.InflectionOne word in utterance appears in anotherform when repeated. Example: I bought theticket. –I bought the tickets.
3. Replacement. One word in an utterance is replaced byanother. Example: He bought this house cheap- Hebought it cheap.4. Restatement. The student rephrases an utterance andaddresses it to someone else, according to instructions.Example: Tell him to wait for you. –Wait for me5.Completion. The student hears an utterance that iscomplete except for one word, then repeats theutterance in completed form. Example: I’ll go my wayand you go … -I’ll go my way and you go yours.
6. Transposition. A change in word order isnecessary when a word is added. Example:I’m hungry.(so). –So am I.7. Expansion. When a word is added it takes acertain place in the sequence. Example: Iknow him. (hardly). -I hardly know him.
8 .Transformation. A sentence is transformed by beingmade negative or interrogative.Example:(+)He knows my address.(–)He doesn’t know my address.(?)Does he know my address?9 . Contraction. A single word stands for a phrase.Example :* Put your book on the table* Put your book there
