  3. 3. July 9, 2017— Fourteenth Sunday In Ordinary Time | 3 STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT One of the most well known and beloved passages in scripture is the gentle invita on of our Lord in to- day’s Gospel reading: “Come to me, all you who labor and are bur- dened, and I will give you rest.” When we need physical rest, we sleep or take a nap. When we need emo onal rest, we some mes take a vaca on. But how do we find spiritual rest? How do we discover Christ’s peace as we grapple with the complex issues of life deep in our hearts? Good stewards find their rest in the Lord. Reflect this week on what you do to welcome the peace of Christ into your heart D F , Peace and all Good! In today’s first reading, Zechariah proclaims the coming of the Messiah in striking imagery. The king will not come on a warhorse, with a display of military might, but meekly, on the beast of burden. And yet, his power is beyond ques on, as he sweeps away chariots, horses, and weapons of war, and proclaims peace to the whole earth. In the same way, Jesus calls all who carry heavy burdens to come to him and find rest. Jesus is “meek and humble of heart,” the king of gentleness and power that Zechariah foretold. Just a word about liturgical music. The most beau ful sound is that of the singing assembly! I invite all of us to par cipate fully in the sung responses and hymns of each Mass. Most especially I encourage you to sing dur- ing the Communion procession. Kerry Quaid and Emma Whiten have been working very hard to enhance the beau ful sound of music for our liturgical celebra ons. With a parish this large, however, I am thinking there must be more parishioners with good and strong voices to join the choir. If you would like an interview for the choir, please call Mr. Kerry Quaid at the parish office. Together let us sing a new song to the Lord! Please reserve Thursday evening, August 10th for our “Summer Serenade” featuring gi ed singer Nick Palance. Nick has been likened to Andrea Bocelli and Josh Gro- ban. His performance will include a variety of musical styles including classical pieces, Italian and Spanish fa- vorites, and Broadway tunes. The concert will begin at 7:00 p.m. in Serra Center. Table sea ng up front is avail- able with delicious hors d’oeuvres, dessert and drinks served at your table. Theater sea ng is also available. Get your ckets now and have a deligh ul evening and help support the many needs of this parish! Thanks! Love, SAVE THE DATE!! Fr. Vince will be celebra ng his 50th-year jubilee as a Francis- can Friar on July 2. Join us for a fes ve Mass and recep on on Sunday, August 27th a ernoon! More details in upcoming bulle ns. The Liturgy Study Corner The Cons tu on on the Sacred Liturgy Promulgated at the Second Va can Council December 4, 1963 The First Cons tu on published by Va can Council II. Each week, the “Liturgy Study Corner” will present various aspects of our Sun- day Worship. In the words of the Second Va can Council Cons tu on on the Sacred Liturgy: “The Liturgy is the summit toward which the ac vity of the Church is di- rected; it is also the source from which all its power flows” (Sacrosanctum Concil- ium, No. 10). The full, conscious and ac ve par cipa on of everyone at the liturgy is to be encouraged. In fact, this is the concern of liturgical renewal, the goal to be considered before everything else. This call for all people to ac vely par cipate runs throughout the Cons tu on on the Sacred Liturgy: (it is repeated over a dozen mes). Christ is present to us in many ways. Christ is present to us in a special way under the appearance of bread and wine, but he is also present in the priest who ministers the sacraments, in the Word of God that is proclaimed, and in the assembly of people who gather in Christ’s name. While preaching o en precedes worship, and while private prayer and devo ons are important, it is the Liturgy that is the source and summit of all the church’s ac vity.

SAVE THE DATE—AUGUST 2ND , 2017 “THE FEAST OF OUR LADY OF THE ANGELS OF THE PORTIUNCULA!” Each year on August 2nd , Franciscans celebrate the birth of the Franciscan Order at the ny chapel of Our Lady of the Angels of the Por uncula down in the Assisi valley. In 1208 in this place, St. Francis hears the Gospel “Go sell what you have and give to the poor and come follow me.” Hearing this Scripture, Francis now had an understanding of his voca on. The Por uncula or “li le por on” as it is called because it is a small church, quick- ly became the center of Francis’ movement. In 1216, St. Francis received from the pope THE INDULGENCE, “Il Perdono di Assisi”, approved by Pope Honorius III. Un l this day, thousands of pilgrims come to the Por uncula on August 2nd to receive the Great Pardon. In our mes, we may receive the Great Par- don in any church. It was here at Our Lady of the Angels, that Francis died on October 3, 1226. Come celebrate the Feast of the Por uncula with a Fes ve Bilingual Eucharist at 6:30 p.m. in the Mission church. A recep on will fol- low the Mass. INTRODUCING THE NEW HOME FOR MSLRP EVENT PHOTOS Our parish photos have moved to a brand new photo service called SmugMug. 8. 8.
