  3. 3. July 2, 2017— Thirteenth Sunday In Ordinary Time | 3 STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT In today’s Gospel, Jesus minces no words: “whoever does not take up his cross and follow a er me is not worthy of me.” Few of us will be called to die the way Jesus did. But to be his disciples means having the willingness to lay down our lives with him and for him. Exercising good stewardship of the Gospel requires taking up one’s cross daily and following Jesus. There will be dying to do on our way to the Father. It could be unfair treatment, health problems, fa gue, frustra on at work, failed rela onships, loneliness or sadness. If we, like Jesus, encounter and accept suffer- ing, we will bring the hope of the cross to others. There is no cross the Lord’s love cannot transcend. In your re- flec ons this week, consider how your cross, no ma er how heavy, might become an instrument of hope and Christ’s love. If God can work through me, he can work through anyone. ~~St. Francis of Assisi D F , Peace and all Good! In the Gospel of St. Ma hew today, Jesus warns his Apostles what to expect before he sends them out to proclaim the Gospel. This will be no easy task, and it requires a commitment beyond any- thing else in their lives, a bond stronger than that between parent and child. And yet the rewards are beyond measure, not only for the Apostles, but for all who help them: “Whoever receives a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward,” Jesus says, alluding to today’s first reading. The woman who welcomed Elisha the prophet out of love of God was rewarded beyond her imagining. When we welcome others in the name of Christ, we welcome Christ himself. I hope you are enjoying the summer. There are many great ac vi es for all of us this summer. This Friday, July 7th , is Movie Night on the Serra Lawn. The movie this week is “Lilo and S tch.” Come along…have a hot dog…enjoy the show and support our youth group! Then, on August 10th , we present “Summer Serenade”, featuring the talented Mr. Nick Palance in a performance of classical, Italian, Spanish, Broadway tunes and much more! He has been compared to Andrea Bocelli and Josh Groban! Tickets are on sale now. See the back cover of to- day’s bulle n for more informa on! Don’t miss this fabulous evening of music, food, and community! On another note, today, July 2nd marks my 50th Anniversary as a Franciscan Friar. I can’t believe I was vested with the Franciscan habit 50 years ago at Mission San Miguel! It was a great day…hot… and the beginning of a journey filled with laughter, peace and amazing fraternal life. We will celebrate the Jubilee later this summer on August 27th . In the mean me, please join me in thanking God for this great gi of a Franciscan voca on! It’s a pleasure ministering here! Love, SAVE THE DATE! “THE FEAST OF OUR LADY OF THE ANGELS OF THE PORTIUNCULA!” AUGUST 2ND , 2017 Each year on August 2nd , Franciscans celebrate the birth of the Franciscan Or- der at the ny chapel of Our Lady of the Angels of the Por uncula down in the Assisi valley. In 1208 in this place, St. Francis hears the Gospel “Go sell what you have and give to the poor and come follow me.” Hearing this Scripture, Francis now had an under- standing of his voca on. The Por uncula or “li le por- on” as it is called because it is a small church, quickly became the center of Francis’ movement. In 1216, St. Francis received from the pope THE INDULGENCE, “Il Per- dono di Assisi”, approved by Pope Honorius III. Un l this day, thousands of pilgrims come to the Por uncula on August 2nd to receive the Great Pardon. In our mes, we may receive the Great Pardon in any church. It was here at Our Lady of the Angels, that Francis died on October 3, 1226. Come celebrate the Feast of the Por uncula with a Fes ve Bilingual Eucharist at 6:30 p.m. in the Mission church. A recep on will follow the Mass.

THE RICHNESS OF LIFE IN CHRIST Today we have the beau ful story of the woman promised a child, the wonderful exhorta on about life in Christ, and a powerful instruc on from Jesus. An embar- rassment of riches? Not if we take Jesus' words about "welcome" to heart. The many challenges and blessings offered to us today by Elisha, Paul, and Jesus should be cause for rejoicing and welcomed hear ly into our lives. And, like the great treat that they are, they should be enjoyed and shared generously with others. Today's reading from Romans was chosen very early in the liturgical life of the Church to be the sole apostolic instruc on received by candidates for bap sm at the Easter Vigil. This illustrates its importance as a core be- lief, and as a means of comprehending the story of the Resurrec on. Christ's resurrec on is not merely a story about something that he underwent once upon a me, but it is our story, the story of how we joined the other members of the one Body of Christ, the church. We were not only dead, but we were buried; not ul mately bur- ied, but raised to eternal life with Christ. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
