What are genetically modified (GM) organisms and GM foods?Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) can be defined as organisms inwhich the genetic material (DNA) has been altered in a way that does not occurnaturally. The technology is often called “modern biotechnology” or “genetechnology”, sometimes also “recombinant DNA technology” or “geneticengineering”. It allows selected individual genes to be transferred from oneorganism into another, also between non-related species.Research Objectives:We would be focusing on the following issues in objectives: Primary Objectives: To study the economic chain involved in GM To identify the problems faced by the farmers To analyze consumer awareness To recommend applicable solutions to their problems Secondary Objectives: To know the adverse effects on health To study the emerging environmental problems due to use ofGM To study the impact of GM on the economy of the nation as awholeScope: The scope of the project would be limited to districts of Gujaratonly. We have limited our project to our objectives only. The scope of our survey will be confined to the followingcommunities:1. Research Instruments: Questionnaire Interviews with farmers, dealers and Consumers.Research Methodology: Research methodology is nothing but a system of models, procedures(process), and techniques used to find the result of a research problem. We have defined our Objectives and On the basis of which we would beworking on that direction. We would be using questionnaire to find the level of awareness aboutGM among general people. We would also find out the Problems faced by the farmers through aquestionnaire and interviews and find out the awareness about GMamong the farmers in rural and urban areas. The data would be gathered through the above procedure, analyzed andpresented by qualitative and quantitative analysis.PRIMARY DATA SOURCES: General public’s survey analysis Dealers and farmers’survey analysisSECONDARY DATA SOURCES: Magazines News-papers Internet Books

Pilot SurveyObjective: To know the feasibility of the research To identify the awareness among peopleAnalysis of pilot surveyWe have surveyed 50 people in different localities of Ahmedabad toknow the level of awareness about GM among them.Through the survey, we came to know that about 55% of peoplesurveyed do not have enough understanding of what is Genetically Modifiedfood.About 18% consider GM food to be safe. When we explained them thatlarge corporations are having patents on GM food, then 54% of them said thatit is not ethical that large corporations have control on GM food. Moreover,65% said Science would most convince them to believe that GM food is safe.
