The Experience of Characters in Kindred by Octavia E....
This novel starts off on June 9, 1976, in California with an African American Girl named Dana on
her 26th birthday with her husband Kevin and are moving into their new home. Kevin has started to
unpack his office and Dana is unpacking books. Then Kevin walks out of the office to talk to Dana
when Dana all of a sudden starts to get dizzy and Dana then finds herself in a grove of trees thats in
the late 1800's in the state of Maryland by a nearby river when she spots a young boy drowning
named Rufus. She then goes into the river to save the unconscious boy. Once the boy has came back
to life and she dealt with his mother she reappears back into her apartment. Several minutes later she
begins to feel dizzy again and then disappears. This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Alice then eventually kills herself and because of that Rufus also nearly kills himself. Rufus then
clings to Dana because she's just like Alice but he then tries to rape Dana but in doing so, Dana stabs
Rufus and kills him. Dana then immediately appears back at her apartment all beaten up.
The writing style that Octavia Butler is very simple. Nothing in this novel is very dramatized or
extremely brutal. Although it t does have a few very dramatic and sad at points when it talks about
Dana getting beat up and Allice hanging herself. The feeling is very dark and kind of dingy because
of all the slavery in this book that the characters go through. This novel has a lot to do with slavery
back in the 1800's. It kind of talks about the life of some African Americans back in the 1800's and
some being worked on the Weylin Plantation. It has a lot of violence and deals with whipping,
hangings, rape, and many other brutal actions.
The culture in this books is African American. The African American culture that this book goes
through is the life of an African American in the 1800's. Back in the 1800's African Americans were
treated very differently than they are treated today. Butler focuses on some of the aspects that they
had to go through. Such as slavery, rape, and getting abused and beaten. African Americans weren't
allowed to do a whole lot. They had to always live in fear.

Essay about Andrew Jackson, an Ideal President for America
Andrew Jackson, seventh president of the United States of America, can be debated as either a good
president or bad president. But if one were to weigh out the positives and negatives of Andrew
Jackson's presidency, one would realize that his positives outweigh his negatives for a variety of
historic facts. Andrew Jackson was a good president because he represented the majority of
America's people by being a common, prevented a civil war when South Carolina threatened to
secede from the nation, and because he technically found or instigated the two major parties used in
America today (Democratic and Republican). Many Jackson oppositionists despise him because of
he is a hypocrite, however America was founded on hypocrisy so as an ... Show more content on

Jackson is very important because he created or instigated the two dominant political parties we use
today (democratic and republican). The beliefs in these parties switched several times in history but
initially Jackson was a democrat. The major beliefs in democrats in the 1820s–1850s were the
beliefs in a small national government, pro states' rights, and a strict interpretation of the
constitution. The republicans (initially known as the Whigs) essentially opposed all of Jackson's
beliefs and therefore had more or less the complete opposite beliefs of the democrats. By starting
these two political parties, he started the way people would categorize political candidates
throughout the rest of American history. There are many who are against Andrew Jackson because
he is a hypocrite. An example of this is how Jackson states he is against slavery but still owned
slaves. One has to understand that America was founded on hypocrisy. Essentially what Jackson is
trying to do is to make compromises on situations so he can support both sides of an argument to
represent as many people as possible. Conclusively Jackson was a great president because he
represented the people of America by being a common man, overcame huge obstacles such as
keeping South Carolina from seceding, and by forming the two most popular political parties used in
America today, the Democrats and the Republicans. Those who argue that Jackson was a bad
president simply

Abraham Lincoln During The Civil War
Abraham Lincoln, inaugurated in 1861 as the 16th president, was one of the most influential people
in American history. Less than month after Lincoln's installation, the Civil War broke out and lasted
his entire presidency until he was assassinated in April 1865. During the Civil War, Lincoln held the
Union together through all the hardship whilst running for reelection. Congress argued over the
issue of slavery for most of the war, while Lincoln focused more on the preservation of the Union.
Before presidency, Lincoln's view on race equality were not in favor of the slaves. Once he was
inaugurated and the war broke out, he focused more on trying to rebuild the United States. At the
beginning of his second term, as the Civil War concluded, Lincoln concentrated more on the subject
of abolition. Throughout his presidency, Lincoln altered his primary goal. ... Show more content on

As soon as the Confederation and the Union began to fight, Lincoln continually put forth an effort.
He used his allies to break the Confederacy by not recognizing them as a nation. Also in the
Gettysburg Address, Lincoln voiced that the Founders created this new nation in the ideas of liberty
and honor. In saying this, he showed how this nation was independent from the rest but united
together as one in power. Lincoln's ideals of the preservation of the Union were also very evident in
the way he choose his generals. He selected people with similar views in the matter of the Civil War.
For instance, Grant wanted a peaceful surrender at the Appomattox Court House where he asked the
soldiers to "lay down their arms and leave." They both only wanted the Union and the Confederacy
to be unified

Dana then immediately appears back at her apartment all beaten up. The writing style that Octavia Butler is very simple. Nothing in this novel is very dramatized or extremely brutal. Although it t does have a few very dramatic and sad at points when it talks about Dana getting beat up and Allice hanging herself. The feeling is very dark and kind of dingy because of all the slavery in this book that the characters go through. This novel has a lot to do with slavery back in the 1800's. It kind of talks about the life of some African Americans back in the 1800's and some being worked on the Weylin Plantation. It has a lot of violence and deals with whipping, hangings, rape, and many other brutal actions. The culture in this books is African American. The African American culture that this book goes through is the life of an African American in the 1800's. Back in the 1800's African Americans were treated very differently than they are treated today. Butler focuses on some of the aspects that they had to go through. Such as slavery, rape, and getting abused and beaten. African Americans weren't allowed to do a whole lot. They had to always live in fear. The tone in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

But if one were to weigh out the positives and negatives of Andrew Jackson's presidency, one would realize that his positives outweigh his negatives for a variety of historic facts. Andrew Jackson was a good president because he represented the majority of America's people by being a common, prevented a civil war when South Carolina threatened to secede from the nation, and because he technically found or instigated the two major parties used in America today (Democratic and Republican). Jackson is very important because he created or instigated the two dominant political parties we use today (democratic and republican). The beliefs in these parties switched several times in history but initially Jackson was a democrat. The major beliefs in democrats in the 1820s–1850s were the beliefs in a small national government, pro states' rights, and a strict interpretation of the constitution. The republicans (initially known as the Whigs) essentially opposed all of Jackson's beliefs and therefore had more or less the complete opposite beliefs of the democrats. By starting these two political parties, he started the way people would categorize political candidates throughout the rest of American history. There are many who are against Andrew Jackson because he is a hypocrite. An example of this is how Jackson states he is against slavery but still owned slaves. One has to understand that America was founded on hypocrisy. Essentially what Jackson is trying to do is to make compromises on situations so he can support both sides of an argument to represent as many people as possible. Conclusively Jackson was a great president because he represented the people of America by being a common man, overcame huge obstacles such as keeping South Carolina from seceding, and by forming the two most popular political parties used in America today, the Democrats and the Republicans. Less than month after Lincoln's installation, the Civil War broke out and lasted his entire presidency until he was assassinated in April 1865. During the Civil War, Lincoln held the Union together through all the hardship whilst running for reelection. Congress argued over the issue of slavery for most of the war, while Lincoln focused more on the preservation of the Union. Before presidency, Lincoln's view on race equality were not in favor of the slaves. Once he was inaugurated and the war broke out, he focused more on trying to rebuild the United States. • 11. The Importance Of Slavery In America South Carolina was one of other numerous states in the United States of America that supported slavery. Many citizens that lived in southern states during this time were in support of slavery because the southern economy was based on it during this time. Slaves traveled to America from West Africa through the Middle Passage. In addition, if they survived the travel through the Middle Passage they were placed in an auction in a few days after they were cleaned and fed. The West Africans were brought to America because of their knowledge on how to produce and cultivate rice ("African Slaves on South Carolina Plantations"). On the southern plantations the slaves did most of the labor on the plantations. Even though they did most of the work they were often treated harshly by their master. Virginia Declaration Of Secession Analysis For this PSD–A, I decided to analyze Virginia's declaration of secession, mainly because while Virginia did become part of the Confederacy, they had conflicting opinions and were still rather 'close' to the Union. Virginia's first reason is because the Federal Government has "perverted said powers." The document also makes a point of how the Federal Government has oppressed both Virginia and the rest of the "Southern Slaveholding States." I think there are multiple reasons for this statement. Firstly, Virginia was probably standing up for what was 'right;' I doing so, also giving the other slave states a voice. Secondly, all the Southern states relied heavily on slave labor, so they seceded to protect their economy. No matter the reason, Virginia ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When work began to improve the Chesapeake Bay they needed to find the culprits of the bad water quality then get rid of them. Scientists and researchers began giving a large volume of effort and look into the extremely complex problems that face the Chesapeake Bay. When research for the improving and saving of the Bay's overall health began it seemed very simple and there were only a couple of problems. The problems included nutrients from agricultural runoff; these nutrients were phosphorus and nitrogen. The combination of the nutrients in the Bay caused a large volume of algae that choked some of the marine life. While bringing in algae the nutrients also killed grasses on the seafloor. These seafloor bed grasses that once covered more than half of the Chesapeake Bay's floor now only covered a tenth of their original area. Though the estuary was having problems it did not receive the terrible pollution from industries that many large rivers and lakes do in other urban areas (Brown, p. 397). Needless to say, it does not mean that the Bay was out of trouble by only having to deal with the problems of the nutrients runoff. The nitrogen and phosphorus is more than enough to handle the Chesapeake Bay. By the year 1987the Chesapeake Bay was taking in 184,000 metric tons of nitrogen 74,000 metric tons of phosphorus a year from such variable as animal and human wastes and agricultural fertilizers. In the Bay game, the crop farmer controls several things, including the type of farming used, the number of acres used for each purpose, and the option of buying new farm equipment ("UVA Bay Game", 2016). The types of farming used in the bay game are conventional high yield, best management practices (BMP), advanced BMP, and sustainable ("UVA Bay Game", 2016). These farming practices range from very poor for the Bay's health to the most beneficial. Conventional high yield farming produces the largest volume of crops, however uses pesticides and fertilizer that are detrimental to the Bay's health ("UVA Bay Game", 2016). Sustainable farming is the most beneficial for the Bay as it puts a diverse population of plants together in order to reduce runoff, however it is more costly and has a lesser crop yield than the other farming practices ("UVA Bay Game", 2016). The crop farmer also has an option to choose how many acres will be used for planting, fallow land (land reserved for the next year to maintain nutrients), and cover crops that will be used as a more natural and environmentally sound option compared to other fertilizers ("UVA Bay Game", 2016). The North and South emerged into two different regions, due to their various differences. These differences included the geography, the economy, the social and classification status, and transportation. One of the most striking differences between the North and the South was the climate and geography. The North's climate was full of warm summers and cold winters; the terrain was rocky and hilly, which wasn't good for farming. But the North did have little farms. Most of the forest was used for shipbuilding, and cities were used for trading centers. The rivers were fast and shallow which made it hard to navigate. Also in the North people used waterpower to run factories, because it was a cheap source of energy. The South was somewhat different; the climate was generally warm and sunny. The summers were long and hot, and the winters were pretty mild. Due to the South's climate they were able to grow different crops in large amounts, unlike the North. Though there were a small amount of beneficial happenings in this era, the bad greatly outweighs the good. Perhaps America prospered economically toward the end of the era with industrialism thriving, but slavery, taxation, and the expansion of the country beckons the question of how this time in America's history could have ever been called the Era of Good Feelings. This era included much conflict and shaped the future events to come. One of the greatest issues within this time period was slavery. The subject had been suppressed for years, and made a halfway appearance within the Era of Good Feelings before it was buried, once again. Slavery was the greatest tension– causing topic between the North and South. Southerners were pro–slavery, as their farms and ways of live depended upon it. During early decades of the nineteen–century the planters of American south were not about to follow the path of gradual emancipation that the northern states had raged. As a result a war, better known as the Civil war, broke out due to the South's declaration for their independence. In the beginning of the Civil war, President Lincoln's main goal was to preserve the union. Although many assumed the Civil war's primary goal was to abolish slavery, that simply wasn't the case. The Union and the Confederacy both wanted to preserve a way of life. The difference between the Union and the confederacy, and what ultimately started the Civil war, was that both sides wanted to preserve life differently. These differences brought many changes throughout the war, and along those changes came many consequences. The Confederacy's goal was independence. They wanted to gain independence from the ... One of the consequences of the civil war was the amount of life that was taken during this time. The destruction of life and property were enormous. The south had many consequences as a result of the civil war. The confederates suffered economically by the civil war. Because most of the fighting was done in the south, a lot of the land was ruined. As a result the south had to rebuild. There was a lot of physical damage done to the region. Most of the best agricultural land were destroyed. Many major cities, like Richmond were destroyed, and farm values diminished. The Confederates believed the Union had limited their constitutional rights to make their own political, social and economic decision. To them the real issue was liberty not slavery. Both the North and the South had slaves, but by the end of the war many slaves were freed and a minority of slaves in the south fled to the union. African Americans weren't allowed to enlists in neither armies, but as the war went on the union admitted black soldiers, but at a lower pay than the whites. ( Foner ... They both wanted the right to use the national government to their advantage, and make the territory that where not states free or in favor of slavery. When Abraham Lincoln won election in 1860 he promised that he would keep the slavery out of the territories. This did not go over very well for some areas that are very southern, and farm oriented. These territories in the Deep South proceeded to succeed from the others and form the confederate states of America. This resulted in the upper or northern states getting angry because they did not want slavery. The north did not accept the fact that the southern territories tried to succeed, and refused to acknowledge the legitimacy. This made them fear the fact that the United States were not so united anymore, and they very well could fracture into many smaller countries, not one large united country. This may have made lots of people fear starting a war, but they did not have a choice. Each side believed in what they were fighting for. Today, Jewish Marylanders live in an open, welcoming environment, but this was not always the case. When the first Jewish settlers landed in St. Mary's City, political equality was only a hope for the distant future. The first wave of Jewish migration to Maryland was marked by a trend of percolation rather then influx migration. Jews in the area practiced a quiet observance rather then an open profession of faith. After the Revolutionary War, urbanization increased and wave two of Jewish migration began. But it wasn't ... Even though suffrage was a right granted to all white males nationally, Jewish men in Maryland could not vote until the early 1800's. The same could be said for the right to hold state office. The Act of 1715 required that the oath of abjuration was added to the end of all oaths of state office. The words "upon the truth faith of a Christian" were administered to all people currently in state office or who were thereafter sworn into state office (Rabinove, 137). The issue of states' rights was not a significant issue because it did not separate the north and south as much as the differences of economies actually did. The main differences in the societies of the northern and southern United States were their economies. The north had an industrial based economy while the south had more of an agriculture based economy. Although the north had some farming, there was not as much farming as there were in the south. The north's economy relied on industries, such as textile mills, that manufactures goods and traded both nationally and internationally. The south however relied solely on farming. The south relied on slaves to help on the large plantations. Southerners often specialized in certain crops, such as tobacco or cotton. These differences in economies were very influential in the separation of the United States and lead to the Civil War. The differences of economies between the north and south were important and led to civil war because it separated the north and south. Many men sacrificed their lives in this battle to protect what we hold dear in unity as a nation. In this battle 23,000 casualties, dead, injured, and missing, were suffered in just 12 hours of warfare(Staff 1). The four men that lie dead in this photograph are all in an open field and all appear to be in Union uniforms. These men were presumingly lined shoulder to shoulder, as is custom in war, while advancing on the confederate soldiers lines. The fence behind these soldiers is missing many of its planks suggesting that many bullets were fired at these soldiers as the advanced towards the confederate lines. This fence is symbolic because with the fence post missing it truly shows the amount of fire that these men were under as they marched their way across the battlefield(Battle of Antietam 1). This battle came after a brutal campaign by the South who had just won The 2nd Battle of Bull Run as well as The Seven Days Battle. Lee's unprecedented plan to start invading the North was seen as unorthodox because all the South needed to do was survive until the citizen's of the North got upset with the war and lost the will to fight. Lee's plan to invade the North was to invade the Maryland which remained loyal to the union and get a crushing blow in union territory.
