DOE Objectives - Project Objectives – Project Methodology and RD&D Scope
3. Investigation:
1. The starting of the largest single load on the microgrid
2. The loss of the largest single generating unit
3. Typical switching events
4. Power system faults at various locations in the system
5. Various penetrations of solar PV operation to examine the impact of
inverters on power quality
Simulation and analysis in the GridLAB-D simulation environment
Quantify the power quality metrics as defined in IEEE 1159 [6]:
1. Impulse and Oscillatory transients
2. Sag and Swell
3. Long duration under and over voltage
4. Voltage and current imbalances
Approach:

4. Approach:
1. Design and development of microgrid island detection, isolation and
re-synchronization techniques to provide high quality power and
enhanced reliability to microgrids.
2. Design and development of an advanced microgrid protection
scheme for fast interruption of fault current to protect expensive
assets (such as DERs and transformers).
3. Design and development of an adaptive microgrid protection scheme
for changing operation modes between the grid connected mode and
islanded mode.
4. Design and development of a microgrid protection coordinator for
protection between microgrids and distributed energy resources.
5. Design and development of a microgrid restoration plan to improve
and enhance reliability and resilience.

6. BEMS must work in conjunction with MGCS in order to support the following (as an
example) System Objectives that MGCS will be subjected to based on it’s
interconnection arrangement with the bulk/distribution power system:
• Demand Response: Usual form of interaction
• Peak Demand Reduction Notice
• Price based Response
• Frequency Responsive Spinning Reserve: Immediate (10-second) response to
contingencies and frequency deviations
• Supplemental Reserve: Response to restore generation/load balance within 10
minutes of an operator's command
• Load Following: Maintenance of the hour-to-hour generation/load balance
• Regulation: Maintenance of the minute-to-minute generation/load balance to
meet

8. Conduct a series of tests to verify all
microgrid controller functionality
including active control of the DER
asset controllers.
Verify microgrid controller operation
with live control of the 13.2kV TNY
facilities that are included as part of
the GridSTAR microgrid.
All necessary precautions will be
taken to ensure the safety of all
personnel, to protect the energized
assets against damage, and to avoid
service interruption or disruption to
any of the existing TNY customers.
