The biggest sporting event – 2014 FIFAWorld Cup is on at Brazil, which is hosting the event for the second time, first
being in 1950. Another grand sporting event – an annual one, the Wimbledon is also on.
Back at home, the biggest democratic exercise to elect members of 16th
Lok Sabha for 543 Parliamentary constituencies
was conducted in nine phases in a free and peaceful manner. It involved 814.5 million people who chose from out of
8251 candidates. There was a clear mandate and Shri Narendra Damodar Modi, became the Indian Prime Minister.
When governments change, priorities change. However, Union budgets prepared immediately after a general election
tend to be large on announcements about change rather than real changes in allocations and priorities. This is because
there is very little time between election results and budget day to be able to comprehensively change the contours
completely. Though there are very high expectations, political experts believe that there would only be marginal
changes, especially when fiscal deficits loom large and there is unrest in some other parts of the World which can
deeply impact the economy. The recent hikes in Railway fares for passengers and freight were seen as bitter pill by
some – while others felt that hikes can be justified, if the Govt. can improve the safety standards and enhance the
efficiency of the system.
The unrest in Iraq caused by the seizure of major cities in the country by the militant group will impact India financially,
though may not translate into a shortage of petroleum products. The kidnapping of some Indian workers at Mosul in
war-torn Iraq underscores the challenges Indian expatriates face in the Gulf region. Indian team has embarked on tour
to England – and are to play 5 Tests and equal no. of ODI besides solitary T20 for Pataudi trophy. Indians are to play in
full 5 tests after more than 6 decades – with the disastrous tour of 2011 looming large in mind, we expect Dhoni’s men
to perform well.
On a different plane, the results in Public Exams and the good show by the students of SYMA Growth were cheerful
news for us. We are in the process of finalizing students for the ensuing financial year. The interviews are over and the
classes would conduct in the 1st
week of July. Together we will strive to improve the society, providing quality
education and inculcating in students, sense of responsibility and care for the society at large. We plan to conduct our
Educational Aid function on 12th
July 2014. We will distribute 1200 sets of uniforms besides honouring the school
toppers of Triplicane and conferring SYMA Seva award. More details are inside. We cordially invite you all to be
present for the function – we request all our members to put in efforts in collecting funds for the Association, which
will ensure continued service to the Society With Regards – S. Sampathkumar.

PERFORMANCE OF SYMA GROWTH
Six years ago, on 6th July 2008, on a very auspicious
day – SYMA Growth was born. It was inaugurated at
NKT National Girls Higher Secondary School, Triplicane
by Shri R Sekar, IPS, (the then) Commissioner of Police,
Greater Chennai. From that day onwards, SYMA
volunteers have strained themselves to ensure success
of the project.
Acquiring knowledge is the way of widening the
horizon of thought and breaking away from limitations
of individuals. Quality education will discipline students
and make them come out of entrenched conservatism
making them more enlightened in the pursuit of refining
human life and adding values to the Society at large.
Education not only opens the gate to lucrative positions
but also expands one’s outlook to the Society making
them better and responsible citizens. Developed
Countries have attained their glory through the wealth
of natural resources, more so, from the quality of
education and the resourcefulness of individuals. A
literate Society is most potent and can ensure the well
being and happiness of all its members – enough reasons
that drive us to concentrate on tuition centre, which can
develop students and mould them to becoming
responsible citizens.
The proof of pudding is in the results.. around this
time, we get very anxious praying for the good results of
our students. In +2 (State Board) around 8, 26,117
candidates appeared for the examination of which -
3,30,480 male students and - 4,14,211 female students
passed. Our Growth students have done well. 5 of our
students have secured more than 1100/1200 in
Commerce Group – and 1 in Science group secured more
than 1100. Our topper TP Rangan secured1164 [200 in
Accountancy & 199 in Economics. We are still saddened
by the fact that 1 in Commerce and 5 in Science group
could not pass.
The X results of SYMA Growth has been exceptionally
good. All 21 students of Tamil medium passed; in English
medium 29 out of 31 passed; unfortunately the two who
failed – failed in Tamil language. Growth topper N.
Subashini secured 490 (with 100 in Maths and 99 in
Science and Social; 96 in English and Tamil) – toppers of
NKT Boys High School and National Girls High School
are from our Growth – 8 students got more than 450. 22
students got more than 400, of which 4 are from Tamil
medium.
SYMA shared its happiness by putting up huge posters
with photos of students who got more than 400 in X &
more than 1000 in +2, thanking our teachers and all
those good Samaritans who have been supporting us.
Without support, we will not be where we are now......
together, we will continue to strive for the betterment of
the society.
No words can describe our gratitude to the
management of NK Thirumalachariar Educational Trust
and NKT Boys Higher School. We thank the NKT
Management for providing us the infrastructure and all
the support. We thank Smt. Leela Sekhar, Secreatry of
NKT Trust and the Head master of the School Mr S
Venkatadri. We pray to Almighty for continued success
of this project and look forward to continued support of
you all. The success is due to the blessings of Lord
Parthasarathi who guides us in all our steps. We must
place on record our thanks and gratitude to those teachers
who taught these students with great dedication,
commitment and devotion. We thank all our teachers and
all of you who have been supporting us in all our
endeavour

Q: Days before submission of Railway Budget, came
the announcement of hike in passenger fares and
Freight tariff. Do you know who was the first Railway

Fromhumblebeginningin1977towhatitistoday,SYMA
has come a long way and that success story is dedicated to
all the volunteers and patrons who have supported it,
ensuring its continuance in serving the society. This year
marks the 25th year of our foray in Medical service – now
we have a well established Medical centre from which
around 40 people benefit daily. More than 2200 patients
utilized our laboratory. To tweet about SYMA – we have
two long term projects (Medical Centre & Growth); two
glittering festivals (Educational & Child Fest) and host of
civic, socio activities and medical camps throughout the
year.
Every year in July, we conduct Educational Aid
Programme in which we provide uniforms to school
children (1200 sets this year too); honour toppers of schools
of Triplicane and give financial aid to select students. It is a
hard truth that there are many school children who manage
with just one set of uniform throughout the year, that too
hard to come by. We strongly believe that we can make
somedifferencetothewaytheseunfortunatechildrenattend
their school.
Fordoingalltheseandforrunningourlongtermsprojects
like Growth and Medical centre, We are constantly on the
lookoutforsponsors.Welookforwardtoyourparticipation.
For all our activities taking place throughout the year, the
collection is mostly done at the time of this Project.
We request all our Members to donate liberally, reach
out to all those known to you and collect funds with which
we will be able to spread happiness to larger group of
students. Cheques are to be drawn in the name of
“SRINIVAS YOUNGMENS ASSOCIATION” payable at
Chennai. In case any donor wishes to make a Bank
transfer, we will provide details of our Bank A/c on
request.ContributionstoSYMAareeligiblefordeduction
under Sec 80G (5) (vi)of Income Tax Act, as applicable.
You have all along supported us in a big way and we
look forward to your continued support. Together we
will ensure transformation towards a better Society.
This year the issuance, scrutiny and selection of
recipients for uniforms was a much simplified process.
We had put up flex boards detailing the date of issuance
of forms which alongside had the complete information
on the documents viz., ration card [to check the address
and economic criteria] and proof of study. The
applications were scrutinized on the spot and those
found eligible were handed over card with which the
recipient can come and collect the uniform. No hassle
of standing in the queue for the application, submitting
them once, interview, coming again to collect the card
and again for collecting the uniform.
Again, only a limited no. of students are to come for
the Educational Aid programme. The rest can collect
the uniforms on 13th July 2014…. Our cheerful
volunteers will ensure that they collect their set without
having to wait and stand for long hours. Service with a
smile and making our recipients also happy is our motto.

Chennai as like any other metro bustles with traffic. Often you hear the siren of an ambulance – you become
anxious – good drivers immediately tend to take to left and stop their vehicle – most of the drivers on road react
swiftly, try to give way for the ambulance to passby – some fools do try to drive fast after the ambulance too….but
mostly, Chennaites are good at heart and this incident well reported in Times of India brings out the good side of
Chennai and of the well-coordinated activity of Chennai Police.
The heart is a muscular organ about the size of a closed fist; weighs between 9 and 12 ounces (250 and 350
grams). It has four chambers - provies oxygen to various arteries. You can feel your heart thudding away every time
you put your hand to your chest. Every day, heart beats about 100,000 times, sending 2,000 gallons of blood surging
through the body. Did you see-‘Chennaiyil Oru Naal’ - a thriller that intertwines multiple stories around one
particular incident, inspired from an actual event that happened in Chennai. We have read heartrending stories of
people donating vital organs when tragedy had befallen on their kin. Normal life in the heart of the city came to a
halt for a few minutes in the city to save a life. In a textbook example of precise coordination between surgeons of
two hospitals and the traffic police, a team transported a heart from the Government General Hospital to Fortis Malar
Hospitals in Adyar, about 12km away , in less than 14 minutes by creating a `green corridor’. The ambulance
carrying the heart, harvested from a 27-year-old man who died in a traffic accident and preserved in a special
container at 4 degrees Celsius, started from GH at 6.44pm and reached Fortis Malar 13 minutes and 22 seconds later,
at 6.57pm. A vehicle normally takes 45 minutes to cover the stretch during the peak hour. At the private hospital, the
parents of Hvovi Minocherchomji, a 21-year-old BCom student from Mumbai, received the heart the mother in tears,
the father with a prayer on his lips.
Malar surgeons immediately started the transplant. The liver and the kidneys went to other hospitals. A human
heart can be preserved for up to four hours, but experts say the earlier the transplant, the higher the chances of
success. C Kathir, a seasoned ambulance driver, was chosen for the mission. Deputy commissioner of police Sivanandan
had 26 of his men in place at the 12 intersections the ambulance was to pass by . As the vehicle passed each signal -
touching 100kmph at times -a pilot radioed in the location to the control room as also police teams along the
corridor. In a few hours after the roadshow, the heart was beating in the recipient’s chest.
It was a great action of donation; then a good act by the Traffic police, ambulance driver and all others involved;
good work of the Doctors ensured that the harvest heart gave renewed life to another. The traffic police created their
first green corridor in 2009, when a heart had to be taken from Teynampet to Mogappair. Thanks to Times of India
who published a detailed report on the entire operation.
Ans to Q.Pg 3 : Asaf Ali, a noted lawyer was the first Railway Minister in the Interim Government. Subsequently
he became the first ambassador to USA. John Mathai, an economist served as the first Railway Minister of
Independent India. Mathai went on to become the Finance Minister too.

  • 1. BLISS VOICE OF SRINIVAS YOUNGMEN’S ASSOCIATION From Editor’s Desk . . . Regd.No. 200/6 Syma Website : www.syma.in For internal circulation only 1 Estd : 1977 The biggest sporting event – 2014 FIFAWorld Cup is on at Brazil, which is hosting the event for the second time, first being in 1950. Another grand sporting event – an annual one, the Wimbledon is also on. Back at home, the biggest democratic exercise to elect members of 16th Lok Sabha for 543 Parliamentary constituencies was conducted in nine phases in a free and peaceful manner. It involved 814.5 million people who chose from out of 8251 candidates. There was a clear mandate and Shri Narendra Damodar Modi, became the Indian Prime Minister. When governments change, priorities change. However, Union budgets prepared immediately after a general election tend to be large on announcements about change rather than real changes in allocations and priorities. This is because there is very little time between election results and budget day to be able to comprehensively change the contours completely. Though there are very high expectations, political experts believe that there would only be marginal changes, especially when fiscal deficits loom large and there is unrest in some other parts of the World which can deeply impact the economy. The recent hikes in Railway fares for passengers and freight were seen as bitter pill by some – while others felt that hikes can be justified, if the Govt. can improve the safety standards and enhance the efficiency of the system. The unrest in Iraq caused by the seizure of major cities in the country by the militant group will impact India financially, though may not translate into a shortage of petroleum products. The kidnapping of some Indian workers at Mosul in war-torn Iraq underscores the challenges Indian expatriates face in the Gulf region. Indian team has embarked on tour to England – and are to play 5 Tests and equal no. of ODI besides solitary T20 for Pataudi trophy. Indians are to play in full 5 tests after more than 6 decades – with the disastrous tour of 2011 looming large in mind, we expect Dhoni’s men to perform well. On a different plane, the results in Public Exams and the good show by the students of SYMA Growth were cheerful news for us. We are in the process of finalizing students for the ensuing financial year. The interviews are over and the classes would conduct in the 1st week of July. Together we will strive to improve the society, providing quality education and inculcating in students, sense of responsibility and care for the society at large. We plan to conduct our Educational Aid function on 12th July 2014. We will distribute 1200 sets of uniforms besides honouring the school toppers of Triplicane and conferring SYMA Seva award. More details are inside. We cordially invite you all to be present for the function – we request all our members to put in efforts in collecting funds for the Association, which will ensure continued service to the Society With Regards – S. Sampathkumar. Volume 13 Issue 2 JUNE - 2014 This is our Silver Jubilee year – SYMA enters its 25th year in Medical Service. Hearty thanks to Dr K Sridhar, Kanchi Sankara Medical Trust and other well wishers who initiated, guided and have been supporting us in this field. You too should be part of this initiative. Sponsor Rs.1000/- on your Special day – take care of a day’s expenses. The Society becomes a better place when its members are ethical, honest, literate and have concern for fellow-beings. SYMA strives to improve the Society …. You too can join the cause. Become a SYMA Member. Request our members to partake in all our activities with enthusiasm. Together we will strive to make the society a better place. Visit our Medical Centre and Tuition Centre – constructive suggestions are always welcome.
  • 2. 2 PERFORMANCE OF SYMA GROWTH Six years ago, on 6th July 2008, on a very auspicious day – SYMA Growth was born. It was inaugurated at NKT National Girls Higher Secondary School, Triplicane by Shri R Sekar, IPS, (the then) Commissioner of Police, Greater Chennai. From that day onwards, SYMA volunteers have strained themselves to ensure success of the project. Acquiring knowledge is the way of widening the horizon of thought and breaking away from limitations of individuals. Quality education will discipline students and make them come out of entrenched conservatism making them more enlightened in the pursuit of refining human life and adding values to the Society at large. Education not only opens the gate to lucrative positions but also expands one’s outlook to the Society making them better and responsible citizens. Developed Countries have attained their glory through the wealth of natural resources, more so, from the quality of education and the resourcefulness of individuals. A literate Society is most potent and can ensure the well being and happiness of all its members – enough reasons that drive us to concentrate on tuition centre, which can develop students and mould them to becoming responsible citizens. The proof of pudding is in the results.. around this time, we get very anxious praying for the good results of our students. In +2 (State Board) around 8, 26,117 candidates appeared for the examination of which - 3,30,480 male students and - 4,14,211 female students passed. Our Growth students have done well. 5 of our students have secured more than 1100/1200 in Commerce Group – and 1 in Science group secured more than 1100. Our topper TP Rangan secured1164 [200 in Accountancy & 199 in Economics. We are still saddened by the fact that 1 in Commerce and 5 in Science group could not pass. The X results of SYMA Growth has been exceptionally good. All 21 students of Tamil medium passed; in English medium 29 out of 31 passed; unfortunately the two who failed – failed in Tamil language. Growth topper N. Subashini secured 490 (with 100 in Maths and 99 in Science and Social; 96 in English and Tamil) – toppers of NKT Boys High School and National Girls High School are from our Growth – 8 students got more than 450. 22 students got more than 400, of which 4 are from Tamil medium. SYMA shared its happiness by putting up huge posters with photos of students who got more than 400 in X & more than 1000 in +2, thanking our teachers and all those good Samaritans who have been supporting us. Without support, we will not be where we are now...... together, we will continue to strive for the betterment of the society. No words can describe our gratitude to the management of NK Thirumalachariar Educational Trust and NKT Boys Higher School. We thank the NKT Management for providing us the infrastructure and all the support. We thank Smt. Leela Sekhar, Secreatry of NKT Trust and the Head master of the School Mr S Venkatadri. We pray to Almighty for continued success of this project and look forward to continued support of you all. The success is due to the blessings of Lord Parthasarathi who guides us in all our steps. We must place on record our thanks and gratitude to those teachers who taught these students with great dedication, commitment and devotion. We thank all our teachers and all of you who have been supporting us in all our endeavour OFFICE BEARERS Annual General Body Meeting of SYMA was conducted on 4th May 2014 at N.K.T. • 3. 3 fšÉ¥gÂÆš irkh Fromhumblebeginningin1977towhatitistoday,SYMA has come a long way and that success story is dedicated to all the volunteers and patrons who have supported it, ensuring its continuance in serving the society. This year marks the 25th year of our foray in Medical service – now we have a well established Medical centre from which around 40 people benefit daily. More than 2200 patients utilized our laboratory. To tweet about SYMA – we have two long term projects (Medical Centre & Growth); two glittering festivals (Educational & Child Fest) and host of civic, socio activities and medical camps throughout the year. Every year in July, we conduct Educational Aid Programme in which we provide uniforms to school children (1200 sets this year too); honour toppers of schools of Triplicane and give financial aid to select students. It is a hard truth that there are many school children who manage with just one set of uniform throughout the year, that too hard to come by. We strongly believe that we can make somedifferencetothewaytheseunfortunatechildrenattend their school. Fordoingalltheseandforrunningourlongtermsprojects like Growth and Medical centre, We are constantly on the lookoutforsponsors.Welookforwardtoyourparticipation. For all our activities taking place throughout the year, the collection is mostly done at the time of this Project. We request all our Members to donate liberally, reach out to all those known to you and collect funds with which we will be able to spread happiness to larger group of students. Cheques are to be drawn in the name of “SRINIVAS YOUNGMENS ASSOCIATION” payable at Chennai. In case any donor wishes to make a Bank transfer, we will provide details of our Bank A/c on request.ContributionstoSYMAareeligiblefordeduction under Sec 80G (5) (vi)of Income Tax Act, as applicable. You have all along supported us in a big way and we look forward to your continued support. Together we will ensure transformation towards a better Society. This year the issuance, scrutiny and selection of recipients for uniforms was a much simplified process. We had put up flex boards detailing the date of issuance of forms which alongside had the complete information on the documents viz., ration card [to check the address and economic criteria] and proof of study. The applications were scrutinized on the spot and those found eligible were handed over card with which the recipient can come and collect the uniform. No hassle of standing in the queue for the application, submitting them once, interview, coming again to collect the card and again for collecting the uniform. Again, only a limited no. of students are to come for the Educational Aid programme. The rest can collect the uniforms on 13th July 2014…. Our cheerful volunteers will ensure that they collect their set without having to wait and stand for long hours. Service with a smile and making our recipients also happy is our motto. Often you hear the siren of an ambulance – you become anxious – good drivers immediately tend to take to left and stop their vehicle – most of the drivers on road react swiftly, try to give way for the ambulance to passby – some fools do try to drive fast after the ambulance too….but mostly, Chennaites are good at heart and this incident well reported in Times of India brings out the good side of Chennai and of the well-coordinated activity of Chennai Police. The heart is a muscular organ about the size of a closed fist; weighs between 9 and 12 ounces (250 and 350 grams). It has four chambers - provies oxygen to various arteries. You can feel your heart thudding away every time you put your hand to your chest. Every day, heart beats about 100,000 times, sending 2,000 gallons of blood surging through the body. Did you see-‘Chennaiyil Oru Naal’ - a thriller that intertwines multiple stories around one particular incident, inspired from an actual event that happened in Chennai. We have read heartrending stories of people donating vital organs when tragedy had befallen on their kin. Normal life in the heart of the city came to a halt for a few minutes in the city to save a life. In a textbook example of precise coordination between surgeons of two hospitals and the traffic police, a team transported a heart from the Government General Hospital to Fortis Malar Hospitals in Adyar, about 12km away , in less than 14 minutes by creating a `green corridor’. The ambulance carrying the heart, harvested from a 27-year-old man who died in a traffic accident and preserved in a special container at 4 degrees Celsius, started from GH at 6.44pm and reached Fortis Malar 13 minutes and 22 seconds later, at 6.57pm. A vehicle normally takes 45 minutes to cover the stretch during the peak hour. At the private hospital, the parents of Hvovi Minocherchomji, a 21-year-old BCom student from Mumbai, received the heart the mother in tears, the father with a prayer on his lips. Malar surgeons immediately started the transplant. The liver and the kidneys went to other hospitals. A human heart can be preserved for up to four hours, but experts say the earlier the transplant, the higher the chances of success. C Kathir, a seasoned ambulance driver, was chosen for the mission. Deputy commissioner of police Sivanandan had 26 of his men in place at the 12 intersections the ambulance was to pass by . As the vehicle passed each signal - touching 100kmph at times -a pilot radioed in the location to the control room as also police teams along the corridor. In a few hours after the roadshow, the heart was beating in the recipient’s chest. It was a great action of donation; then a good act by the Traffic police, ambulance driver and all others involved; good work of the Doctors ensured that the harvest heart gave renewed life to another. The traffic police created their first green corridor in 2009, when a heart had to be taken from Teynampet to Mogappair. Thanks to Times of India who published a detailed report on the entire operation. Ans to Q.Pg 3 : Asaf Ali, a noted lawyer was the first Railway Minister in the Interim Government. Subsequently he became the first ambassador to USA. John Mathai, an economist served as the first Railway Minister of Independent India. Mathai went on to become the Finance Minister too.
