In the first fortnight of the Otago Polytechnic Bachelor of Information Technology project we invite local industry leaders "The Dragons". They provide critique of projects as early as possible. This is a chance to get feedback, and hopefully unearth opportunities and risks.

  • Greetings and salutations!We are team KANlink, comprised of myself and so and so and so and soOur 3rd year project will see us working closely with Sally Carson, the program director of the University of Otago Marine Studies Centre
  • The business problem of the client was that there was a lack of digital tools that encourage exploration of the natural environment.Ourproject has addressed this problem by encouraging the publicto explore the natural environment and to make and share their own scientific observations through the use of smart devices. The Marines Studies Centre has made this application available for use to visitors to the peninsula since September. Since then, a large number of observations have occurred, a network of observers has grown and the number visitors to the rocky shoreline on the Otago Peninsula has increased.     26. 26.  The µCloud project has addressed the opportunity of the Raspberry Pi which is a compact computer. Currently to use the Raspberry Pi a user must plug in a keyboard, mouse and a screen. We propose to allow the user to configure the device via wireless interface. We will have a functional system developed by late April. We expect the software to be used by at least a few hundred people.

The Gaia project has addressed the opportunity for people to learn about the plants in their region. It has been in use since the end of September and has been downloaded from the Otago Museum website by over  500 unique users with measureable increase in  botanical knowledge amongst visitors.
    35. 35. Our first solution is a 20 questions styled app that asks the user questions to narrow down the closest option  to the plant they’re investigating. Our next option is to work with Leafsnap on their  project. This would allow access to their photo  recognition software and place us into a larger team.
