Tech Timeline S Sorte

 1. 1. A personal timeline of educational technology
 2. 2.

My name is Sally Sorte.

I started [pre]school in 1988 in Corvallis, OR.

I graduated from high school in 2004 in Corvallis, OR.

I first went to college at Whitman College in 2004.

When I finish my degree, I hope to become some combination of writer, director, educator, and activist.

 3. 3. Educational Technology = The purposeful incorporation of technology through instruction, authentic tasks, and student-interface with the educational material. The technology is selected and implemented in order to specifically prepare students for personal, academic, and professional success, and meaningfully engage students through 4-dimensional, life-like learning mediums.
 4. 4.

3D Reading – Teach students to LEARN from reading here .

Get to know the authors you’re reading, i.e. Paulo Coelho (The ALCHEMIST) here .

Make reading interactive through Reader’s Theatre here .

An online, individually differentiated reading program, check it out here .

 5. 5.

Ideas for nowadays:

Photo / Paint / KidPix slideshows

Interact with a SmartBoard

Computer “Treasure Hunts” (simplified)

Visual Teaching – PowerPoint slideshows, SHOW concepts (i.e. Metamorphosis sped up)

Auditory Learning: Voicethread, Recorders, iMovie

In Kindergarten, I remember listening to songs about all the letters… that was about it for us.
 6. 6.

Ideas for Nowadays:

TeenBiz – online differentiated reading program

Txt Msg Polling- http://www.polleverywhere.com/

Paperless – Google Docs

Practice Vocab for a Cause – www.freerice.com

Characterization through MySpace or Facebook.

YouTube

We went to the Language Lab for Spanish, learned Excel/PPT in the Computer Lab, programmed conic cartoons on our graphing calculators, and went to the library to use Microfiche… and, eventually, the internet.
 7. 7.

Ideas for Nowadays:

Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, BlogSpot, Ning

SmartBoard / Promethean

Global Collaboration (Skype, e-mail, etc.)

Visual Storytelling (digital or video cameras)

From the Planetarium, to programming C++ in the math lab, to analyzing films in the RFS theatre, to laying out pages for the Whitman College newspaper– as I grew, so did the technology I interacted with.
 8. 8.

Color, variety, cutting edge

Alternative Literacy

Teaching students where they’re at

Interactive: New students find their voice through technology.

For example: ICED , a videogame that educates the player about the immigration & deportation process.

 9. 9.

Twitter

Cell Phones

Video Cameras

 10. 10.

Desks will double as touch screen computers.

Teachers will be able to selectively ‘tune in’ to individuals’ & groups’ progress.

 11. 11.

Reduction of purchase power: computers cost more than pencils.

Technology is simply another manifestation of cultural capitol; not everyone is equally endowed.

Technology is always changing, it costs to keep up.

 12. 12.

Ben Sweetland :

“ We cannot hold a torch to light another's path without brightening our own.”
