Chapter 1: Intro
Are you a resident of one of the developing countries
abroad in a prestigious university?

(1)

? Do you want to pursue postgraduate studies

You don’t need to be a super student having a high GPA in order to secure a scholarship abroad … You
just need to have simple qualifications, which certainly every one could have... Like good English
language and a bachelor degree … I myself didn’t believe that I could hunt a scholarship, competing with
applicants from all over the world … but after going through the experience I can assure you that there
are enough scholarships for those who are serious about it … you just need to go out and hunt one
yourself … I can assure you as well it’s a piece of cake, just if you are doing your work.. This simple guide
provides links for every single tool that you might use throughout this journey... The only thing that I
would ask everyone to do for granted is to believe 100% that he/she is able to nail at least one
scholarship!
It’s recommended to start this procedure during the last year of your bachelor, as it will be easier for
you to prepare all the required documentation. Without further introductions let’s hunt a scholarship!

Chapter 2: Things you need to prepare before starting to search for a
scholarship:
1. TOEFL/IELTS
The first thing to do is to set for a TOEFL or IELTS exam… In case that you did bachelor abroad, and
English was the official language of instruction (lectures, exams …etc), you might only need to prove that
with an official letter from your university … it depends on the university that you are applying to but
most of them won’t need a TOEFL exam in that case.
Don’t take too much time to think about it Simply choose a date and book the exam … after booking the
exam you will find yourself preparing and studying to get some score for that test… You will find lots of
free materials on the internet to prepare for the tests … It depends on your level of English whether you
need to take a course to be able to sit for the exam…. The fees for both of the exams are comparable ….
It depends on the country … in average it would cost 170 US dollars.
Both of the tests are accepted at all the universities around the world … However, I would recommend
going for IELTS, as for applying for any university you need to send the results to the educational
institution … for TOEFL you need to pay a fee of 17 US dollars to ETS for sending an official copy of your
result to the university that you are applying to … it usually takes more than three weeks for the hard
copy to reach the university …. On the other side for IELTS you don’t need to send or pay anything …
Most of the educational institutions worldwide have agreements with IELTS, where they are able to
check your results directly from their end.



TOEFL: http://www.ets.org/toefl/ibt/about/content/

Just register to create an online account …. ETS is the organization handling the TOEFL exams all over the
world … you can book everything online …. Internet Based Test is the best version of the test, that
contains speaking … The older versions (Computer based and Paper based tests) aren’t recommended
nowadays.


IELTS: http://www.ielts.org/

Just choose your country from the drop list menu on the right … then proceed to book the test.

2. Resume/CV
Don’t spend much time with the design and the layout of the resume … the most important thing is the
content of the resume … I just followed a standard format for the resume … it’s called europass, it’s a
standard format, well known across countries of the European Union … there’s a template as well for
the resume … you just download the template … fill in your details … and your resume is ready . I
referred to this example just to show that one shouldn’t spend much time on the layout of the resume,
4
what is important is the information included. It’s recommended to follow a reverse chronological
order, so the latest comes first. Try to put the important sections that you want to highlight in the
beginning so that the reader doesn’t get bored quickly.
Europass CV: http://europass.cedefop.europa.eu/en/documents/curriculum-vitae

3. Recommendation letters
You will need at least 2 at most 3 recommendation letters for any application …. It can be from your
lecturer, supervisor at work, manager at work … but at least there has to be one letter from a university
lecturer …. My advice is to prepare as many contacts as you can as you will need them all …. Some
universities require a hard copy of the letter in a sealed envelope (envelope that contains the
recommender’s signature on the seal of the letter) … and some will just ask for a scanned copy of the
letter, and then when you get accepted you will need to show the original copy of the letter…. Other
universities like Oxford and Cambridge will ask the referees to submit online references …. In which they
are sent a link where they need to write and recommend you before a certain deadline.
My advice is to prepare 5 copies from each of your supervisors, make them sign the letters, take one
copy and scan it, and place the rest in an envelope, seal the envelope and let the supervisor sign on the
seal. And try to assign other referees just for the online referencing job; don’t let them be bothered with
this hard-copy-referencing thingy…. Gather all your info in one email for them, all the info that they
might need while filling in your reference.
Most probably your referees will ask you to write a tentative for the letter that you need … prepare a
very simple letter …. Try to personalize the letter about you … try to mention anything that relates you
to this supervisor …. Like a project that you worked on under his supervision … that’s why it’s
recommended that you choose a referee that knows you quiet well …. You can find lots of examples for
recommendation letters online. As an example;
http://jobsearch.about.com/od/referenceletters/a/sampleteachref2.htm.

Chapter 3: Searching For a scholarship
Now we are going to head to the most critical part, which is finding the scholarship. There are many
variables that can direct you towards starting the search; like your target program (Engineering,
Commerce ... etc.), application deadlines, the type of masters targeted (by research or by course) and
may be the ranking of the universities or the country where you will be studying. You can easily narrow
your search by using this magical website:
-Homepage: http://scholarship-positions.com/
-Scholarships for developing countries: http://scholarship-positions.com/scholarship-for-developingcountries/ .
You can search on this website for scholarships by the field of study, by the country, and you can have a
look as well at the government scholarships offered for developing countries. The first time you enter
the website it will ask you to write your email address to subscribe for their newsletter. In case it
doesn’t, fill in your email address in the box that’s on the right of the page. Every three days they will
send you an email, with the latest updates for all the current scholarship deadlines. I can say that is very
useful. It will take like 3 minutes from you every three days to check whether any suitable scholarship
openings are there. I have done most of the work while I was searching. I have compiled most of the
scholarships according to their types. So for any scholarship ad you should be checking:
1. Who is the scholarship for (region, country, ethnic groups, and religious groups)?
2. For which subject/field?
3. What does the scholarship cover?
As some of the scholarships only cover the tuition fees, and sometimes called full scholarships as
well. Other scholarships offer an amount of money, like 12000 euros per year and it’s up to you
to check whether this would cover all the costs (tuition, living costs) or not. If that was the only
scholarship that you were able to secure and you wouldn’t be able to afford living costs on your
own, then you can target to study at one of the countries that are
If it’s suitable for you, I highly recommend for you to keep track of all the details by making a word
document, and enlist the following info:
4. The deadline for the application.
Be aware that the deadline for the scholarship application is different than the deadline for the
university application. Most of the scholarships require that you have already been admitted to
a university, so try to keep both deadlines in mind.
5. The requirements (documents, qualifications ...etc.)
In the next chapter I will present all these scholarships. There might be new scholarships that came out
recently, try to keep track and be up to date.

6
Chapter 4: Types of Scholarships:
European Union Scholarships
Erasmus Mundus Masters Courses
These are scholarships offered by the European Union where collaboration is formed between
universities from different countries all over Europe, where students need to pursue a master’s degree
in a certain topic, in at least two European countries. The topics are similar year after year, and the
application procedures of this scholarship are pretty simple and easy. It’s yearly, with the deadline
around November of each year.

ourses_en.php

Scholarships provided by governments
Before applying for a government scholarship, you need to have been admitted to a university first. So
the first step is to search for a suitable university according to your desired course, apply for a master’s
degree at this university (usually you will receive the admission decision after three months from the
date of application), and then you will be ready to apply for the government scholarship. It depends on
the country, some of the applications are handled by the embassy of that country, and in this case you
will need to contact the embassy as the deadlines will be decided by them. In the links provided below
every single detail you need to know is provided. Eligibility criteria, application deadline, application
procedures ….etc. I will present here the most famous ones, but you can find all of these scholarships
through that link: http://www.scholars4dev.com/1892/government-scholarships-for-developingcountries/.

  • 4. Chapter 1: Intro Are you a resident of one of the developing countries abroad in a prestigious university? (1) ? Do you want to pursue postgraduate studies You don’t need to be a super student having a high GPA in order to secure a scholarship abroad … You just need to have simple qualifications, which certainly every one could have... Like good English language and a bachelor degree … I myself didn’t believe that I could hunt a scholarship, competing with applicants from all over the world … but after going through the experience I can assure you that there are enough scholarships for those who are serious about it … you just need to go out and hunt one yourself … I can assure you as well it’s a piece of cake, just if you are doing your work.. This simple guide provides links for every single tool that you might use throughout this journey... The only thing that I would ask everyone to do for granted is to believe 100% that he/she is able to nail at least one scholarship! It’s recommended to start this procedure during the last year of your bachelor, as it will be easier for you to prepare all the required documentation. Without further introductions let’s hunt a scholarship! (1) http://www.oecd.org/document/45/0,3746,en_2649_34447_2093101_1_1_1_1,00.html 3
  • 5. Chapter 2: Things you need to prepare before starting to search for a scholarship: 1. TOEFL/IELTS The first thing to do is to set for a TOEFL or IELTS exam… In case that you did bachelor abroad, and English was the official language of instruction (lectures, exams …etc), you might only need to prove that with an official letter from your university … it depends on the university that you are applying to but most of them won’t need a TOEFL exam in that case. Don’t take too much time to think about it Simply choose a date and book the exam … after booking the exam you will find yourself preparing and studying to get some score for that test… You will find lots of free materials on the internet to prepare for the tests … It depends on your level of English whether you need to take a course to be able to sit for the exam…. The fees for both of the exams are comparable …. It depends on the country … in average it would cost 170 US dollars. Both of the tests are accepted at all the universities around the world … However, I would recommend going for IELTS, as for applying for any university you need to send the results to the educational institution … for TOEFL you need to pay a fee of 17 US dollars to ETS for sending an official copy of your result to the university that you are applying to … it usually takes more than three weeks for the hard copy to reach the university …. On the other side for IELTS you don’t need to send or pay anything … Most of the educational institutions worldwide have agreements with IELTS, where they are able to check your results directly from their end.  TOEFL: http://www.ets.org/toefl/ibt/about/content/ Just register to create an online account …. ETS is the organization handling the TOEFL exams all over the world … you can book everything online …. Internet Based Test is the best version of the test, that contains speaking … The older versions (Computer based and Paper based tests) aren’t recommended nowadays.  IELTS: http://www.ielts.org/ Just choose your country from the drop list menu on the right … then proceed to book the test. 2. Resume/CV Don’t spend much time with the design and the layout of the resume … the most important thing is the content of the resume … I just followed a standard format for the resume … it’s called europass, it’s a standard format, well known across countries of the European Union … there’s a template as well for the resume … you just download the template … fill in your details … and your resume is ready . I referred to this example just to show that one shouldn’t spend much time on the layout of the resume, 4
  • 6. what is important is the information included. It’s recommended to follow a reverse chronological order, so the latest comes first. Try to put the important sections that you want to highlight in the beginning so that the reader doesn’t get bored quickly. Europass CV: http://europass.cedefop.europa.eu/en/documents/curriculum-vitae 3. Recommendation letters You will need at least 2 at most 3 recommendation letters for any application …. It can be from your lecturer, supervisor at work, manager at work … but at least there has to be one letter from a university lecturer …. My advice is to prepare as many contacts as you can as you will need them all …. Some universities require a hard copy of the letter in a sealed envelope (envelope that contains the recommender’s signature on the seal of the letter) … and some will just ask for a scanned copy of the letter, and then when you get accepted you will need to show the original copy of the letter…. Other universities like Oxford and Cambridge will ask the referees to submit online references …. In which they are sent a link where they need to write and recommend you before a certain deadline. My advice is to prepare 5 copies from each of your supervisors, make them sign the letters, take one copy and scan it, and place the rest in an envelope, seal the envelope and let the supervisor sign on the seal. And try to assign other referees just for the online referencing job; don’t let them be bothered with this hard-copy-referencing thingy…. Gather all your info in one email for them, all the info that they might need while filling in your reference. Most probably your referees will ask you to write a tentative for the letter that you need … prepare a very simple letter …. Try to personalize the letter about you … try to mention anything that relates you to this supervisor …. Like a project that you worked on under his supervision … that’s why it’s recommended that you choose a referee that knows you quiet well …. You can find lots of examples for recommendation letters online. As an example; http://jobsearch.about.com/od/referenceletters/a/sampleteachref2.htm. 5
  • 7. Chapter 3: Searching For a scholarship Now we are going to head to the most critical part, which is finding the scholarship. There are many variables that can direct you towards starting the search; like your target program (Engineering, Commerce ... etc.), application deadlines, the type of masters targeted (by research or by course) and may be the ranking of the universities or the country where you will be studying. You can easily narrow your search by using this magical website: -Homepage: http://scholarship-positions.com/ -Scholarships for developing countries: http://scholarship-positions.com/scholarship-for-developingcountries/ . You can search on this website for scholarships by the field of study, by the country, and you can have a look as well at the government scholarships offered for developing countries. The first time you enter the website it will ask you to write your email address to subscribe for their newsletter. In case it doesn’t, fill in your email address in the box that’s on the right of the page. Every three days they will send you an email, with the latest updates for all the current scholarship deadlines. I can say that is very useful. It will take like 3 minutes from you every three days to check whether any suitable scholarship openings are there. I have done most of the work while I was searching. I have compiled most of the scholarships according to their types. So for any scholarship ad you should be checking: 1. Who is the scholarship for (region, country, ethnic groups, and religious groups)? 2. For which subject/field? 3. What does the scholarship cover? As some of the scholarships only cover the tuition fees, and sometimes called full scholarships as well. Other scholarships offer an amount of money, like 12000 euros per year and it’s up to you to check whether this would cover all the costs (tuition, living costs) or not. If that was the only scholarship that you were able to secure and you wouldn’t be able to afford living costs on your own, then you can target to study at one of the countries that are If it’s suitable for you, I highly recommend for you to keep track of all the details by making a word document, and enlist the following info: 4. The deadline for the application. Be aware that the deadline for the scholarship application is different than the deadline for the university application. Most of the scholarships require that you have already been admitted to a university, so try to keep both deadlines in mind. 5. The requirements (documents, qualifications ...etc.) In the next chapter I will present all these scholarships. There might be new scholarships that came out recently, try to keep track and be up to date. 6
  • 8. Chapter 4: Types of Scholarships: European Union Scholarships Erasmus Mundus Masters Courses These are scholarships offered by the European Union where collaboration is formed between universities from different countries all over Europe, where students need to pursue a master’s degree in a certain topic, in at least two European countries. The topics are similar year after year, and the application procedures of this scholarship are pretty simple and easy. It’s yearly, with the deadline around November of each year. http://eacea.ec.europa.eu/erasmus_mundus/results_compendia/selected_projects_action_1_master_c ourses_en.php Scholarships provided by governments Before applying for a government scholarship, you need to have been admitted to a university first. So the first step is to search for a suitable university according to your desired course, apply for a master’s degree at this university (usually you will receive the admission decision after three months from the date of application), and then you will be ready to apply for the government scholarship. It depends on the country, some of the applications are handled by the embassy of that country, and in this case you will need to contact the embassy as the deadlines will be decided by them. In the links provided below every single detail you need to know is provided. Eligibility criteria, application deadline, application procedures ….etc. I will present here the most famous ones, but you can find all of these scholarships through that link: http://www.scholars4dev.com/1892/government-scholarships-for-developingcountries/. • 9. UK British Chevening Scholarships http://www.fco.gov.uk/en/about-us/what-we-do/scholarships/chevening/ The Netherlands A simple and easy tool provided by the Dutch government in order to assist foreigners to search for a scholarship is a tool called the grant finder: http://www.nuffic.nl/en/scholarships/grantfinder/grantfinder-database Norway http://siu.no/eng/Front-Page/Programme-information/Development-cooperation/Quota-Scheme Sweden http://www.studyinsweden.se/Scholarships/SI-scholarships/The-Swedish-Institute-Study-Scholarships/ As soon as the results of Swedish university admission have been published at www.universityadmissions.se, the online service for the Swedish Institute Study Scholarships will open. • 10. Scholarships provided by multinational corporations Some multinational industrial corporations offer grants for master students from developing countries to pursue their studies abroad.
