  4. 4. DEFINE GEARBOX A gearbox is a collection of mechanical components thatdeliver maximum power from an engine by managing a series of gear ratios that in turn operate a transmission. Thesecomponents include: a gear selector, fork, collar, dog teeth and a gear set.

  6. 6. WHY IS MANUAL GEARBOX ? Manual transmission gearboxes are thesimplest types of gearboxes and involve themanual movement of a sliding gear along thegearboxs main shaft using a shifter.
  7. 7. WHY IS MANUAL GEARBOX ?  Although The manual gearbox is rare in modern cars, but is considered superior in sports cars. The ability to select any desired gear at will gives the driver a greater degree of control over the cars behavior than with most other types of gearboxes.  Manual gearboxes are also the least expensive to purchase and so are considered favorable in economy cars.

Torque multiplication is directly related to the number of teeth on the input gear vs the output gear.• the gearbox allows the engine to use less fuel while providing more power

  10. 10. NEUTRAL POSITION:- In this case the movable gearstick position isnt Dovetailed withthe layshaft and the output torquefrom the gearbox is zero.
  11. 11. FIRST SPEED:- In this case the movable gear stickposition at which the main shaftwhere the first gear(the bigestdiameter) it is dovetailed with thesmallest one the lay shaft and this isto get the bigest gear ratio andmaximize the output torque resultingin mimimize the output speed.

  19. 19. SYNCHRONIZER COMPONENTSThe Synchronizer is made up of the speedgear, synchronizer ring, synchronizer keys ,keysprings, clutch hub, and hub sleeve

A needle roller bearing isinstalled between the speed gear and the output shaft, allowing the gear to rotatefreely on the shaft 2-The synchronizer ring – also called a blocker ring – is made of brass and isinstalled on the conical portion of the gear. Narrow grooves are cut in the inside areaof the synchronizer ring to provide the necessary clutch action of the gear. Threeequally spaced slots are cut on the outside surface for the synchronizer keys to fitinto.

H OW D O E S S Y N C H RO N I Z A T I O N WO R K S ? 3-Two key springs are installed, one on each side of the clutch hubto hold the synchronizer keys in place against the hub sleeve. 4-The clutch hub is fit to the output shaft on splines and is securedby a snap ring 5-Three synchronizer keys are installed in the three equally spacedslots in the clutch hub and are aligned with the slots in thesynchronizer ring.

An internalgroove cut in the center of the hub sleeve splines centers the hubsleeve. The hub sleeve is indexed by the three spring loadedsynchronizer keys

  24. 24. SYNCHRONIZED GEAR SHIFT –FIRST STAGE When the transmission is inneutral, the synchronizer keydetents hold the hub sleeve inthe neutral position
  25. 25. SECOND STAGE The taper of the sleeve spline pushes against the taper of the ringteeth to exert more pressure on the gear cone
  26. 26. THIRD STAGE When the speed of the hub sleeve and the gear become equal thehub sleeve engages the splines of the gear
