  8. 8. Mr. Bumble - The pompous, self-important beadle—a minor churchofficial—for the workhouse where Oliver is born. Though Mr. Bumblepreaches Christian morality, he behaves without compassion towardthe paupers under his care.

In effect, she gives her life for Oliver when Sikes murders herfor revealing Monks’s plots
