  12. 12. IPL TOURNAMENT FORMAT & RESULTS INDIAN PREMIER LEAGUE
  13. 13. TOURNAMENT FORMAT Currently, with eight teams, each team plays each other twice in a home-and-away round-robin tournament. At the conclusion of the league stage, the top four teams qualify for the finals. The top two teams play each other in the first preliminary round match, with the winner going straight to the final while the loser goes on to the second preliminary round. The third and fourth place teams play each other to decide who will take on the loser from the first preliminary round match. The winner of the second preliminary round match will move onto the final where the winner will be crowned the Indian Premier League champions.
  14. 14. TOURNAMENT RESULTS Out of the eleven teams that have played in the Indian Premier League, three have won it twice, while two have won it once each. The Chennai Super Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders, and Mumbai Indians are the most successful teams in league's history. The other two teams who have won the tournament are the Deccan Chargers and Rajasthan Royals. The Super Kings are the only team to have won the tournament and then defended it the next season, winning in 2010 and winning again in 2011.
  15. 15. IPL RULES & REGULATIONS INDIAN PREMIER LEAGUE
  16. 16. RULES AND REGULATIONS A team can acquire players through five ways: 1.The annual auction, 2.signing domestic players, 3.signing uncapped players, 4.trading players, and 5.signing replacements. In the trading window, a player can only be traded with his consent, with the franchise paying the difference if any between the old and new contract. If the new contract is worth more than the older one, the difference is shared between the player and the franchise selling the player.
  17. 17. RULES AND REGULATIONS Some of the team composition rules are as follows: 1.A minimum squad strength of 16 players, one physiotherapist and a coach. 2.No more than 10 foreign players on the squad and a maximum of four foreign players in the playing XI. 3.A minimum of 14 Indian players must be included in each squad. 4.A minimum of six players from the BCCI under-22 pool must be included in each squad. IPL games utilise television timeouts and hence there is no time limit in which teams must complete their innings. However, a penalty may be imposed if the umpires find teams misusing this privilege. Each team is given a two-and-a-half-minute "strategic timeout" during each innings; one must be taken by the bowling team between the 6th and 10th overs, and one by the batting team between the 11th and 16th overs.
  18. 18. IPL BROADCASTING INDIAN PREMIER LEAGUE
  19. 19. BROADCASTING On 17 January 2008 it was announced that a consortium consisting of India's Sony Entertainment Television (Set Max) network and Singapore-based World Sport Group secured the global broadcasting rights of the Indian Premier League. The record deal has a duration of ten years at a cost of US$1.026 billion. As part of the deal, the consortium will pay the BCCI US$918 million for the television broadcast rights and US$108 million for the promotion of the tournament. The initial plan was for 20% of these proceeds would go to IPL, 8% as prize money and 72% would be distributed to the franchisees from 2008 until 2012, after which the IPL would go public and list its shares. However, in March 2010, IPL decided not to go public and list its shares. Sony-WSG then re-sold parts of the broadcasting rights geographically to other companies.

  21. 21. IPL CONTROVERSIES INDIAN PREMIER LEAGUE
  22. 22. IPL CONTROVERSIES Indian Premier League and controversies have always seemed to go hand in hand. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has found itself in the middle of many conflicts with various cricket boards around the world as a result of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Let’s check out the top 10 controversies that have surfaced over the years, since IPL was first introduced in 2008.
  23. 23. JINXED START The cloud of controversies have been hovering upon IPL even before its first season was played. The inaugural IPL season coincided with the County Championship season as well as New Zealand’s tour of England and the ECB and county cricket clubs raised their concerns to the BCCI over players. The ECB did not sign ‘No Objection Certificates’ for players. Thus Dimitri Mascarenhas was the only English player who could sign with the IPL for the
  24. 24. SLAPGATE INCIDENT If the fours and sixes were not enough to bring attention to the newly introduced format in 2008, Harbhajan Singh and Sreesanth created a ‘Slapgate’of their own. This happened after a match when Harbhajan Singh probably could not digest the defeat of his team and ended up slapping Kings XI speedster Sreesanth. Though the actual reasons of conflict between the two players remain unclear to this day, the paceman was seen crying bitterly on the ground at the end of the IPL match, which his team won by 66 runs.
  25. 25. LALIT MODI SUSPENDED Forget about the players the IPL has even seen the ouster of its so-called founder Lalit Modi. He was suspended in April 2010, after being accused of of a wide range of financial impropriety, from rigging bidding deals related to the IPL, offering bribes, betting and money laundering. Troubles have since then mounted for Modi and he recently claimed that he will expose several others involved in the fixing.
  26. 26. RAVINDER JADEJA'S ONE YEAR BAN Sir Jadeja got banned from third season of IPL in 2010 after he tried to seek a move to the Mumbai Indians, despite having a contract with the Rajasthan Royals. Jadeja appealed against this ban but it was in vain as IPL authorities decided to make an example of Jadeja and send out a strict warning against such actions.
  27. 27. DADA OUT OF KKR After having him as the skipper for first three seasons, KKR abandoned Saurav Ganguly in the fourth. The Shahrukh Khan-owned franchise did not bid for their own Sourav Ganguly in 2011 IPL auctions. This came as a heart break to thousands of his fans in Kolkata. They launched a “No Dada, No KKR” campaign that saw several protests being organised both on the streets and social media. However, Pune Warriors came to Ganguly’s solace and took him in place of injured Ashish Nehra.
  28. 28. SRI LANKAN PLAYERS BANNED FROM PLAYING IN CHENNAI They advise to keep politics away from sports but Cricket has always been a medium for the politicians to encash their personal motives. Same happened with IPL in the sixth season when Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa refused to entertain Sri Lankan players in the IPL matches to be played in Chennai. This extreme step was taken in response of the Sri Lankan Tamils issue which dominates Tamil politics. However, the surprising thing was that the all powerful IPL governing council had to agree upon the decision and a total of 13 Sri Lankan players, inlcuding legends like Kumara Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene were not allowed to play in Chennai citing security concerns.
  29. 29. KING KHAN'S WANKHEDE STADIUM BRAWL Shah Rukh Khan may be India’s biggest superstar who his fans die to have one look at but all his aura is unwelcome at Wankhede Stadium. Bollywood star found himself in a controversy in IPL 2012 after he allegedly used abusive language and was involved in a fight with the stadium staff. The Mumbai Cricket Stadium (MCA) banned King Khan’s entry to the stadium for next five years. The ban has been lifted recently.
  30. 30. PUNE WORRIORS WITHDRAWAL The journey to IPL was a short one for Pune Warriors India. While the league was rocked by the spot-fixing scandal in 2013, Pune Warriors had the troubles of their own. They failed to pay the full franchise fee for the year 2013. With the BCCI en-cashing the bank guarantee, the Sahara group, which owns the franchise, decided to pull out of the league.
  31. 31. 2012 SPOT FIXING SCANDAL On 14 May 2012, an Indian news channel India TV aired a sting operation which accused 5 players involved in spot fixing. Reacting to the news, Indian Premier League president Rajiv Shukla immediately suspended the 5 uncapped players. The five players were, TP Sudhindra (Deccan Chargers), Mohnish Mishra (Pune Warriors), Amit Yadav, Shalabh Srivastava (Kings XI Punjab) and Abhinav Bali, Delhi cricketer . However, the report went on to claim that none of the famous cricketers were found guilty. On the reliability of the report, Rajat Sharma, the editor-in-chief of news channel India TV quoted that the channel had no doubts about the authenticity of the sting operation and prepared to go to court. Mohnish Mishra who was part of Pune Warriors India team for the season, admitted to have said that franchises pay black money, in a sting operation. Mishra was caught on tape saying that franchisees paid them black money and that he had received 15 million (US$220,000) from the later, among which₹ 12 million (US$180,000) was black money. He was also suspended from his₹ team.
  32. 32. 2013 SPOT FIXING AND BETTING CASE The involvement of some players in match fixing, came into light on May 16,2013, after Delhi Police arrested three Rajasthan Royals players – Sreesanth, Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan on grounds of spot-fixing. Later on, small-time actor Virender “Vindoo” Dara Singh, Gurunath Meiyappan, a top official of Chennai Super Kings and son-in-law of BCCI president N Srinivasan and several bookies were also found to be embroiled in the whole fixing-game. The series of events led to BCCI President N. Srinivasan stepping down on 2 June 2013.
  33. 33. MARKETING MIX OF IPL INDIAN PREMIER LEAGUE
  34. 34. PRODUCT IPL stands for Indian Premier League. It is a Twenty20 tournament started by BCCI. It is the brainchild of Lalit Modi. It started in the year 2008 and comprises the players from all over the world. A perfect blend of cricket & entertainment. It’s providing a stage for many youngsters to show their performance & profitable too to Advertisers and broadcasting channels.
  35. 35. PRICE As far as the IPL pricing structure is concern, The IPL is predicted to bring the BCCI income of approximately US$ 1.6 billion, over a period of five to ten years. All of these revenues are directed to a central pool, 40% of which will go to IPL itself, 54% to franchisees and 6% as prize money. The money will be distributed in these proportions until 2017, after which the share of IPL will be 50%, franchisees 45% and prize money 5%. The IPL signed up Kingfisher Airlines as the official umpire partner for the series in an Rs.106 Crore’s (1.06 billion) deal. This deal sees the Kingfisher Airlines brand on all umpires’ uniforms & also on the giant screens during third umpire decisions. Sony Entertainment Television signed a new contract with BCCI with Sony Entertainment Television paying a staggering Rs.8700 Crore’s (87 billion) for 10 years.
  36. 36. PLACE IPL choosed its venue as India which has populaion of more than 1.2 billion people where cricket is not a sport but a religion. All the matches takes place at the cricket grounds of the cities participating.
  37. 37. PROMOTION When Bollywood and cricket met, the result was IPL and it was truly entertaining to see one’s favorite cricketer as well the Bollywood star on the same platform. IPL was no doubt an entertaining one. Super stars like Shah Rukh, Preity, Akshay, Katrina, Hrithik had been a source which provided a lot of glam to IPL promotion. To attract the cricket fans, even team-owners have started selling tickets personally. Preity Zinta, the co-owner of Kings XI Punjab and Australian pace man Brett Lee sold the tickets along with their autographs.
  38. 38. PEOPLE Indian Premier League is mostly targeted for the younger generation youth. As the generations are very busy with their day to day work with IPL they get entertainment along with cricket which helps them to enjoy every aspect of the game. People are very excited towards IPL as this is only one game that brings different players of different countries at one platform, for which they tend to get attracted to see their favorite player perform. Some of the audiences are also attracted to see their favorite celebrity cheering for the team.
  39. 39. PROCESS Indian Premier League as a whole is the biggest event of the year for which months of preparation are to be done. For instance organizing the respective 8 teams who are performing for the event and the most important of all is marketing the IPL as it has to reach the wide range of audience globally. An arrangement of stadium where this event is going to be held is also finalized well before. Finally and most important of all is execution of the Event.
  40. 40. PHYSICAL EVIDENCE Fun, Music, Entertainment & sports, where can you find that, answer for that is INDIAN PREMIER LEAGUE. People wait for this season as they get everything in a joyful bundle. IPL is also the biggest platform for advertising and promoting different product or brands which is clearly viewable during the event.
  41. 41. PROS & CONS OF IPL INDIAN PREMIER LEAGUE
  42. 42. PRO'S OF IPL Since it has a large potential mass audience, IPL is very attractive as a marketing communications opportunity, especially for advertisers and sponsors. The league functions under a number of franchises. Each franchisee is responsible for marketing its team to gain as large a fan-base as possible. The long-term success of all of the franchises lies in the generation of a solid fan-base. The fan-base will generate large TV revenues. Different fans will pay different amounts to watch their sport. There will be corporate hospitality, season tickets, away tickets, TV pay- per-view and other ways to segment the market for the IPL. There is a huge opportunity for merchandising e.g. sales of shirts, credit cards and other fan memorabilia. Grounds can also sell refreshments and other services during the games. Franchise fees will remain fixed for the up until 2017-18, which means that the investment is safe against inflation which is traditionally relatively high in India.
  43. 43. CON'S OF IPL The level of competition that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) can generate determines long-term viability of the league. If the level of competition drops, then revenue will fall. For example, if the top names in cricket cannot be attracted to India, the appeal of the game will fall. Often getting hold of the big names is a problem – Australian domestic cricket runs concurrent with the IPL and if players move form Australia to India to follow the money then their domestic game will be hit. This is known as ‘Free Agency.’
  44. 44. If the franchisee’s fan-base does not generate income then they may not have the cash to pay the salaries of the best players. However, if you invest in the best players and they do not win the trophies, then you may not see a return on your investment. It won’t be a quick return on investment – so owners need to be in it for the long-term. Franchises are very expensive. The most expensive franchise – Mumbai Indians – was bought by Mukesh Ambani for $111.9 million, whereas the lowest priced franchise – Rajasthan Royals was picked up by Manoj Badale for a mere $67 million. The most highly priced teams may not be those that have the early success. Revenues will come from the most highly supported teams.
