  4. 4. What are my rights to stop a debt collector from contacting me?<br />Debt collectors must stop routine collection efforts upon receiving either:<br /> A written request from you to stop contact (a “cease and desist letter”); or<br />A written refusal from you to pay the debt.<br />
  5. 5. What’s the catch?<br />The debt collector can still file a collection lawsuit against you or take any other appropriate legal action to collect the debt.<br />
  6. 6. What is a “cease and desist” letter?<br />A letter that is sent to the debt collector demanding that they permanently stop<br />(“cease”) and not contact you in the future ("desist") about the debt.<br />
  7. 7. I already sent a cease and desist letter.Can they still contact me?<br />If you sent a “cease and desist” letter, a debt collector may only contact you to:<br />Advise you that collection efforts are being terminated; or  <br />Advise you of the debt collector’s intent to invoke specific remedies.<br />The debt collector may not request payment during this time!<br />
  8. 8. Important note<br />If you have multiple debts with the same creditor, you must send a “cease and desist” letter for each debt separately. One letter will not do.<br />
