  4. 4. History of Display Technologies • Cathode Ray Tube – 1st display technology • First commercial color CRT- 1954 • Vacuum tube containing electron gun
  5. 5. Liquid Crystal Display • Liquid crystal display • Good quality , price & power efficiency • Transmit only 5-10% of the backlight radiation
  6. 6. Operation Principle • Pixel => OFF => Mirrors are parallel • Pixel => ON => Primary Mirror is deformed
  7. 7. Fabrication • Each pixel is produced in two half • Secondary mirror – Lithographically patterned array of Al on glass • Primary mirror -
  8. 8. Advantages • Increases battery time • Low cost • Relative ease of fabrication • High transmission efficiency • Pixel response time is high
  9. 9. Disadvantages • Only disadvantage is low contrast ratio
  10. 10. Conclusion • Backlight transmission 36% & can reach upto 56% with design improvements • Have potential to be faster than LCD’s • More scalable than plasma • Cheaper and energy efficient than both
