In a mobile-terminated call, the MSC/VLR sends a paging order to the BSCs /RNCs controlling the last location area of the mobile station. To be able to do this, the MSC/MSS has to know which BTSs belong to which location areas and by which BSCs/RNCs they are controlled. Paging can be done either with the TMSI or IMSI of the mobile station. The network operator can define if paging is repeated when the first paging is done with TMSI or IMSI and the MS is not found. If the paging is repeated, it is done with the IMSI. In idle mode, the mobile station (MS) listens to the BCCH and to the paging subchannel for the paging group that the MS belongs to. The network initiates the paging procedure by broadcasting a paging request message on the appropriate paging subchannel. When a mobile station receives a paging request, it leaves the idle mode (ignores further paging request messages) and initiates the immediate assignment procedure by sending a channel request. A paging request message includes an indication that defines how mobiles of different capabilities shall code the establishment cause field in the channel request message. The information received in the channel request can be used by the network to assign a suitable channel.

The search parameters are VLR-specific and they are separate from the paging parameters. The network operator can define both the number of searches they want to perform for one subscriber and the interval between searching operations. The network operator can also limit the maximum number of searches started simultaneously, or even block the searching operation. If the network operator has set a limit for simultaneous searches, the system will set an alarm when the limit is exceeded. When the MSC/VLR receives a mobile-terminated call or a short message, and notices a Serving GPRS Support Node (SGSN) address in the VLR indicating that the MS is GPRS -attached, it sends the paging request to the SGSN. The SGSN sends the circuit-switched page through the GPRS paging channels and the MS responds to the page by using the normal circuit-switched GSM channels. In search, the paging request is sent to all SGSNs and if an SGSN knows the routing area of the MS, the SGSN pages the MS. Paging Description… (2)

For internal use only National NPO Doc Name: Paging Success Rate Author: Mukesh Moradiya Creation: 03rd Aug 2009 5 © Nokia Siemens Networks Parameter changes We have changed following 3 parameters • Implicit detach timer = 004:10 Hour from 12:00 • Repaging attempts = 1 from 2 • Repaging interval = 450 (x10 ms) from 300(x10 ms) Implementation on done on 30th July. We can see improvement on Paging since 30th July.. Note:- It is still under observation for few days more. If it will remain stable then we will suggest for all circles.
