  3. 3. HOW MANY KIND OF RADIATION?There are too many different types to count them. The non-ionizing portion of electromagnetic radiation consists ofelectromagnetic waves that are not energetic enough to detachelectrons from atoms or molecules, ionizing them. Theseinclude radio waves, microwaves, infrared, and (sometimes)visible light. (Ultraviolet light, X-rays and gamma-rays areregarded as ionizing.) The occurrence of ionization depends onthe energy of the individual particles or waves, and not on theirnumber. An intense flood of particles or waves will not causeionization if these particles or waves do not carry enoughenergy to be ionizing, unless they raise the temperature of abody to a point high enough to ionize small fractions of atomsor molecules in that fashion.
  4. 4. The electromagneticspectrum is the range of allpossible electromagneticradiation frequencies. Theelectromagnetic spectrum(usually just spectrum) of anobject is the characteristicdistribution of electromagneticradiation emitted by, orabsorbed by, that particularobject.

WHAT IS REM ?The Rem used to be used in Health Physics to measure radiation dose, it is anacronym for Rontgen Equivalent Man.(The methodology allows for the differenteffects of different types of radiation). The unit now used is the Sievert (Sv), 1Sievert = 100 Rem. This is a large unit, so millisieverts are used for practicalpersonnel radiation measures, so 1 millisievert = 100 millirem.Recommended radiation levels for nuclear workers are set by the ICRP(International Committee for Radiation Protection). These used to be set at 5Rem/year (50 milliSv) but now the level is 20 milliSv/year ie 2 Rem/year. The useof Rem and millirem has been discontinued in the nuclear industry in favour ofSieverts and millisieverts.However as someone with nuclear experience going back to 1958 I find it difficultto think in Sieverts. For example I know that 500 Rem will kill roughly 1/2 thepeople exposed to it within a month, now I have to change that to 5 Sieverts.Fortunately that level of exposure has only happened once (at Chernobyl).

MEDICAL TREATMENTThere is not potential the effective treatment method of that can beused for fatal doses of radiation now.The case with a Japanese boy illustrates an important fact concerningthe radiation sickness.The boy was almost the same with the person of the person to whomthe dosage of 450 rapid eye movements had been received maybe, andhis symptom had received about 300 rapid eye movements. The fataldose is received in the medicine, a less radiation is received with dyingpeople in spite of all efforts, and there is no method distinguishedbetween other one that it is possible to save at all.Processing concerning the one that it is possible to save includes thetransfusion and the bone-marrow transplant.The bone-marrow transplant makes the supply of the white bloodcorpuscle to be influenced by the radiation rejuvenate.
