  2. 2. Introduction・The 8.8 quake resulted in widespread damage,destroying buildings, bridges and roads in manyareas. Electricity, water and phone lines were cut.・Several Pacific countries were hit by waves higherthan usual after a tsunami was caused by thequake.
  3. 3. Hawaii・People in coastal areas were warned to move tohigher ground.・Hawaii later lifted its tsunami warning after wavesmeasuring just under 1m high struck, but therewere no reports of damage.
  4. 4. New Zealand・People in coastal areas were warned to move tohigher ground.
  5. 5. Santiago ・After the quake, it is reported that at least 13people were killed.・Several buildings collapsed, including a car parkwhere dozens of cars were smashed.・A fire at a chemical plant in the outskirts of thecapital forced the evacuation of the neighbourhood.
  6. 6. French Polynesia・Waves 1.8m high swept ashore, but there were noreports of damage.
  7. 7. Tahiti・People in coastal areas were warned to move tohigher ground, but there were reports of damage.
  8. 8. Chile・After the quake, it is reported that at least 214people were killed.・Chile is highly vulnerable to earthquakes as it islocated on the Pacific Ring of Fire.
