Week11-2

  1. 1. Radiation Effects on Human s1180035 Shota Furuya
  2. 2. Contents● Units of Measurement● Effects on Human Health● Major Radiation Exposure Events in Real Life ○ Hiroshima and Nagasaki ○ Three Mile Island ○ Chernobyl● Conclusion
  3. 3. Units of Measurement● rem (roentgen equivalent of men and mammal) ○ Represents the amount of radiation ○ Determines how much harm a person suffers ○ Equals 0.01Sv (10 mSv)● A dose of rems from ○ Directly explosions ○ Fallout (radioactive particles on earths surface or clouds that is produced by the nuclear explosion)
  4. 4. Effects on Human Health 25~100 rems : Changes in blood, but no harmful effectsAbove 100 rems : Nausea, Vomiting, Headache, etc. Above 300 rems : Temporary hair loss, Loss of white blood cells, Hemorrhaging 450 rems : Half of exposed people die Above 800 rems : Fatal damage to people
  5. 5. Major Events : Hiroshima and Nagasaki● Many people died not from the actual explosion, but from the radiation from the explosion● People suffered from diarrhea and a discharge of blood● Doctors nurses had no idea to do with people injured● The survivors have suffered from ○ Cataracts ○ Leukemia ○ Malformed offspring and premature aging ○ Social discrimination
  6. 6. Major Events : Three Mile Island● A accident of nuclear plant occurred in 1979● Some 220 gallons of polluted water was leaked● 140,000 people were evacuated from surrounded area● Clean up required years and millions of dolloars● No one reported injured and little radiation leaked out to external area
  7. 7. Major Events : Chernobyl● Another serious accident of nuclear plant in 1986● Its said the reason of it was fatal combination of ignorance and complacency● Resulted in the reactor exploding● 50 tons of nuclear fuel were released into the atmosphere● 70 tons were ejected sideways from the periphery of the core● Many people have died from explosion and radiation● Total number of deaths will be 16,000
  8. 8. Conclusion● There is no effective treatment available for radiation doses● Currently medical science has no way of telling the difference between people who have received fatal doses and others can be saved.
