2. Guantanamo Bay is a maximum security prison in Guantanamo Bay,
Cuba.
It was established in 1898 when the U.S. took control of Cuba from
Spain.
3. When the base was first opened it was used for holding Haitian and
Cuban refugees.
It is now used as a prison for detainees from Iraq and Afghanistan.
4. The camp is known for mistreating inmates and murdering Cuban
guards and civilians.
The prisoners are tortured through fear and humiliation and are also
beaten vigorously.
5. Many prisoners resort to suicide to escape the torture.
An example of this is on June 10th, 2002 The Department of Defense
reported three men hanging themselves with nooses made of
clothing and bed sheets.
6. In 2009 President Barack Obama ordered the camp to be
closed but order was over-ruled in the Senate.
8. In 2011 the camp was named the most expensive prison in the
world with each prisoner costing around $800,000 ( of our tax
money) a year. That is over 30 times more than the average
cost for a prisoner!
9. The Cubans are the rightful owners of the land where the prison
is located but they refuse to forcefully take the land back, they
want to take it with peace. Even after many Cuban citizens have
been murdered by guards at Guantanamo they still refuse to use
violence.
10. Join protests to save the lives of many people in Guantanamo Bay
and give the land back to the rightful owners.
