Guantanamo Bay is a maximum security prison in Guantanamo Bay,Cuba. It was established in 1898 when the U.S. took control of Cuba fromSpain.
When the base was first opened it was used for holding Haitian andCuban refugees. It is now used as a prison for detainees from Iraq and Afghanistan.
The camp is known for mistreating inmates and murdering Cubanguards and civilians. The prisoners are tortured through fear and humiliation and are alsobeaten vigorously.
Many prisoners resort to suicide to escape the torture. An example of this is on June 10th, 2002 The Department of Defensereported three men hanging themselves with nooses made ofclothing and bed sheets.
In 2009 President Barack Obama ordered the camp to beclosed but order was over-ruled in the Senate.
There are approximately 450 prisoners in the camp currently.
In 2011 the camp was named the most expensive prison in theworld with each prisoner costing around $800,000 ( of our taxmoney) a year. That is over 30 times more than the averagecost for a prisoner!
The Cubans are the rightful owners of the land where the prisonis located but they refuse to forcefully take the land back, theywant to take it with peace. Even after many Cuban citizens havebeen murdered by guards at Guantanamo they still refuse to useviolence.
Join protests to save the lives of many people in Guantanamo Bayand give the land back to the rightful owners.
