Obtain a keyboard with MIDI capability to learn on. Keyboardscome with a large variety of options, from key size to the number of keys you can hold down simultaneously.When choosing a keyboard, get one thats as realistic as possible when compared with an actual piano. Geta keyboard with full-sized keys; a 49- key keyboard is good for beginningplay, but for more advanced learning61-keys would be more appropriate. Obtaining a touch-sensitive keyboard will also aid you in the learning process, as a way to develop a natural playing style transferrable to an actual piano.
Connect the keyboard to your PC using a MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) cable. The MIDI connectsfrom the keyboard to the USB port on the PC and allows an exchange of data betweenyour keyboard and computer. Everything from the chosen instrument sound on your keyboard to the duration andfirmness in which you press akey on the keyboard converts to data and transfers along the MIDI cable where the PC interprets the data using a software tutorial program.
Purchase and install a software tutor for your keyboard onto the PC. Choose a software package thats concurrent with your playing level and your musicalinterests. Software packages are available which will teach you piano from the first note played, continuing to advanced lessons covering sight-reading, music theory and various musical genres. Follow the installation instructions provided by the software manufacturer. The installation process shouldattune your connected keyboard with the application, making it available to use during the learning process.
Start the software tutor, and follow along with the software instructions tolearn to play the piano on your PC. Keyboard lessons are easilytransferable to afull-sized piano, and cover most aspects of piano playing.
