4. 4. What is SEO?

What you are aiming for most of all is a good ranking on the search engines especially Google. So that when people go looking for your product, your site will appear first on the search engine’s page.

This process is known as Search Engine Optimisation or SEO.

There are many things you can do to maximise your SEO…

 5. 5. How to maximise your SEO

Use not good but great keywords! And make sure they are relevant.

LSI or Latent Semantic Indexing is a tool used by Google.

LSI recognises the associations around a word that you use so use many different variations of your keywords to get maximum results.

Use meta-tags, they are what google picks up on when it trawls your site.

Use a relevant domain name, preferably with a keyword in it.

Take advantage of various Google programs such as AdSense and AdWords

 6. 6. The Importance of Keywords

It is imperative that you use relevant keywords in order to generate traffic to your site.

The better the keywords you use, the better the search.

The more interested the searcher is, the more keywords he/she will put in when searching.

Knowing your keywords and what your target audience is searching for is essential.

To need to build a large list of possible keywords, think like a user, not a marketer.

Don’t do “Keyword Stuffing” it will annoy the user and more importantly, Google will pull down the site as it won’t fing the information relevant.

As a guideline, use keywords in about 50% of your site, anymore and it will look unnatural.

 7. 7. Google AdWords Explained

This is Google’s pay-per-click ad program.

With Google Adwords, you can create a short and concise ad with relevant keywords which google will then pick up and make sure that it is being seen on all pages relevant to the content of your site.

Your ad is ranked by Google principally on its keywords.

 8. 8. The Benefits of Google AdWords

With Google AdWords you are not just focusing on a target audience, you are focusing on a target audience that is actively searching for what you are selling/advertising.This gives rise to a huge potential audience for your product.

There is no set budget for Google AdWords. You decide how much yu want to pay. This is great for small companies as they get the same exposure as larger companies for the same price.

The timing is perfect. Ads appear at the time that your audience is actively searching for your product.

You can be flexible. Your ad can be edited at any stage, at no extra cost.

 9. 9. Google AdSense Explained

Google AdSense is the partner of Google AdWords.

With AdSense, you pay for the ad to be put on Google.

With AdSense, you can put up other people’s ads on your website and create a small profit for yourself.

The ads that appear on your site must be relevant to your own website.

This is a pay-per-click program, so until someone clicks on the ad you get nothing.

Adsense ads are also reliant wholly on keywords so the ads that come up on your site must be keyword relevant.

 10. 10. The Benefits of Google AdSense

Realistically, how much you make on AdSense is proportionate to the amount of people who visit your website and actually click on the ads.

You don’t want to help the competition too much so make sure that the ads appearing on your page are relevant but not too much so.

You can always remove an ad that you don’t want on your page.

 11. 11. Some Important Tips!

Google appears to favour themed/more focused websites so make your site content as relevant as possible.

Make sure your wbesite is well-structured and well- written. Make it interesting for the user to look at. This will encourage them to come back again.

Always have your website split into sections- this makes it easier for the user.

It makes sense to have an ad on your website for something that is updated daily (e.g The Irish Times) as Google will identify this as a changing website and will keep your rankings high.

Use images and videos on your site to make it “sticky”. It will pull the traffic towards your site!

Use blogs to advertise your site on and to keep people coming to your site.

Update your site regularly, Google will rank it higher the more you change it.

Have a subscription option for a newsletter or a membership option. This way you can build your database and keep people coming back to your site.

Always have a privacy policy and a “contact us” link. Google likes these.

Use links- internal links to other pages on your site and external links to other relevant websites. Having link-backs to your site from another website is also very beneficial.
