Who is a LEADER?<br />a one providing guidance by going in front <br />a one causes others to go with him <br />Empowering others<br />Sharing the tasks among his team members<br />Articulating vision/embodying values/giving HOPE<br />Shaping and sharing a vision which empowers the team members<br />Are best when they barely know that she or he exists<br />a one who would say “we did it” when the project is completed<br />
  3. 3. 4 types of Civic Leaders<br />Paternalistic – patriarchal or matriarchal style of leadership; built on established personal or kinship relationships; inspiring great loyalty and have a familial relationship with staff<br />
  4. 4. Activist – engaged in lobbying work; highly motivated, charismatic, focused on single issue; inspire the followers with clear messages<br />Managerialist – administrative abilities; establishing structures; managing the team, setting the responsibilities<br />
  5. 5. Power of Vision<br />Catalytic/Visionary leader <br /><ul><li>Strategic leaders
  6. 6. Promote and implement change
  7. 7. Wider world view/global leaders
  8. 8. Change agents delegating the work to the team

Leaders or Managers <br />Leaders - inspire, initiate change, encourage new learning, create networks, developing a different culture; creating bigger picture and promoting change<br />Managers – plan, implement and monitor on a more operational and administrative level; mainly resolving specific issues, day to day challenges<br />

  13. 13. Leadership is a process where an individual influences a group or individuals to achieve a common goal<br />What does LEADERSHIP want from us? <br />
  14. 14. Integrity<br />Leadership is someone hard to please <br /><ul><li>It wants us to be as good as our word…
  15. 15. It wants our actions to match our words/values
  16. 16. Wow! It wants us to be true to our team members and colleagues
  17. 17. Leadership wants us to create an environment for people to work and participate….</li></ul>Are we doing it? Are you as Alumni doing it? What it means for you? <br />

Vision <br />Serve and participate because you believe in the result<br />Values are connection between our vision and the team<br />Make sure the team can see the results, the vision<br />Team will fight for what they believe in<br />Team will fight to defend what they create<br />Flash news! Freedom is as expensive as Baku is folks!<br />

Keep the vision in sight for everyone<br />Keep the team aware of the original goal<br />Debate to implement the vision and to encourage the team<br />Team can take ownership of the vision<br />Don’t move off the original vision<br />Vision keeps the team focused and together<br />“A house divided will fall” Abraham Lincoln<br />

  25. 25. What to do<br />Review your program, its goals<br />Identify the groups and people you are trying to reach<br />Set priorities<br />Develop messages: short, expressive, informative, motivating<br />Follow up!<br />Phone calls, emails, leafleting, speeches, video appeals, brochures<br />

Use available tools and technology<br />Blogging – create your blog for self-awareness, personal development, sharing your ideas, diary helps you analyze<br />Facebook – be open, be transparent; transparency lessens the rumors; share your ideas via STATUS, videos, postings<br />Video blogging – don’t like writing? Then shoot videos, get your message across, discover yourself and help others in self-awareness<br />
