  2. 2. What does ‘succession planning’ mean? Succession planning is a process for identifying and developing people with the potential to fill key leadership roles in your organisation.

  4. 4. Who needs to do it? <ul><li>All sports clubs and organisations that: </li></ul><ul><li>have a future </li></ul><ul><li>have a plan – business plan, action plan or some other strategic document </li></ul><ul><li>want to ensure continuity. </li></ul>
  5. 5. We’re convinced, where do we start? <ul><li>Like all good plans, this one starts with ‘ Where are we now? ’ Some people call it a ‘human resource audit’. You’ll need to answer these questions: </li></ul><ul><li>Who does what? (List all the people you have and the roles they fill.) </li></ul><ul><li>What else needs to be done? </li></ul><ul><li>Who will do it when the people doing it now leave or step down? </li></ul>

Some definitions that might help <ul><li>Role: this says what people do , what they are responsible for , not what their job title is </li></ul><ul><li>Competency: the overall ability to perform a specific role </li></ul><ul><li>Skill: the learnt ability to perform a task </li></ul><ul><li>Continuity: a smooth transition from one leader to her or his successor </li></ul><ul><li>Talent: the people who will fill your club’s roles well and do a good job. </li></ul>

Yes Have they got the skills and competency needed? Do you have someone in post in each role? Can you recruit someone from outside the club? No Recruit and train them Everything running smoothly? How do we recruit people when nobody seems interested in helping? <ul><li>Share information: </li></ul><ul><li>What roles exist </li></ul><ul><li>What they involve, including the time commitment needed </li></ul><ul><li>What the benefits of being involved are </li></ul><ul><li>What the club’s plans for the future are. </li></ul>

What are the benefits of recruiting someone from inside the club? <ul><li>Doing this will (usually) promote a feeling of well-being throughout the club </li></ul><ul><li>You know their strengths (and weaknesses) </li></ul><ul><li>They already know the way things are done (the club culture) </li></ul><ul><li>You don’t have the problem and expense of advertising externally. </li></ul>

What are the benefits of recruiting someone from outside the club? <ul><li>New blood will bring different ideas and methods, which could enhance or even revitalise the club </li></ul><ul><li>Having new people will spread the load </li></ul><ul><li>They might bring in their own contacts and help grow the club. </li></ul>

How do we get volunteers up to speed? <ul><li>Training: you might need to invest in formal training courses leading to qualifications </li></ul><ul><li>Mentoring: it might help to get an existing member of the team to support the learning of a recruit </li></ul><ul><li>Shadowing: just following someone as they fulfil their role can be a powerful way to find out about what is needed to do it </li></ul><ul><li>Task and finish groups: get new recruits to work on discrete short-term projects as they find their way through the organisation. </li></ul>
