Now before we start on our study a Disclaimer: I will be using some positive examples from my personal life to illustrate the points . In order that you do not think more of me than who I am , I am going to make this Disclaimer using an imaginary illustration. I always imagine that in my heart there is a throne. Before Christ took hold of me I was sitting on that throne and ruling my life. There was no room for a cross in my heart. One day God brought me to the cross and revealed His grace to me . Jesus was there punished for my sins enduring the agony of being separated from the Father. God by His Grace gave me faith to Trust in this sacrifice. On that day I received forgiveness and Jesus became my Savior. Now in my heart there were two places . The throne and the cross. I decided that Jesus would be my Lord. And so I vacated the throne of my heart for Jesus and I went to the cross. With Jesus ruling my life from the throne of my heart there was a great change in my life .But it was tough hanging on the cross, the pain, the suffering and the shame. So many times when I did not like it I sent Jesus to the cross and I sat on the throne. I found this very convenient, for every night I can go to Jesus as He hung on the cross – confess my sins and seek His forgiveness. But that grieved the Holy Spirit and He will convict me and I will again vacate the throne for the cross. This vacillation was more when I was immature, but it reduced as I became more and more mature, but it has not ceased. So the examples that I will share from my life are from such moments when Jesus was on the throne and I was on the cross. The Bible says in Phip 2:13 f or it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose. Therefore all the positive examples from my life are moments when God willed and worked His good purpose in my life . So all Glory to His Name. I am just a sinner saved by Grace unwilling to hang on the cross. So with that Disclaimer lets get into the subject. 3 mins
At the outset I would like to define Work – Place - and Ministry so that throughout this study we are on the same page. So Work is the organization or business God has placed us in and in that context the product , process or service God has made us responsible for , and the people – bosses, peers, subordinates, customers , suppliers, enforcement agencies etc. God brings us to interact with – again in the context of our work. By Place I mean the family in which God has place us , the local Church where God has placed us and social surroundings in which God has placed us. Minister is a translation of the Greek word Diakonos , which is derived from the word Diakonis which mean one “laboring in dust”. So it basically means a servant . So by Ministry I mean how we serve God as God’s servant in the context of Work and Place. The emphasis is on God .It is about what God is doing in our life. Therefore it is not about ME nor about God’s plan for MY life, MY career and MY growth. It is about God and His plans and His purposes for His Kingdom and how God wants us to partner in His Kingdom purposes. That is the perspective with which we will be doing this study. 1.5 mins Tot 4.5
We will do this study in three parts . Work by itself as a Ministry Ministry at the place where we are working Ministry after work hours . 0.5 min Tot 5
What is the basis by which we can say that our Work is a service we render to God. Or in other words at Work we are serving God . There are two passages from the Bible. First in Ephesians Then there is a parallel passage in Colossians. The passages are very clear and there is no need for further exposition , we serve Christ at Work. He is our super Boss. When we work in organisation we are doing what God wants us to do and we are serving God. With the basis firmly established let us see what are the Principles that govern us in the work environment. 2 mins Tot 7
I have called them as Kingdom principles as it is about God’s kingdom and His Righteousness. There are 12 principles listed – and this is not an exhaustive list - and today we will just see three principles. The first principle is Honesty. Let us read two verses from Proverbs . Truth is an attribute of our God. Jesus said I am the Way , The Truth and The Life. So when we serve God at Work we cannot compromise Truth. Truth in all things that relate to us as a person in our relationship with the organisation and in things related to business. I’ll give some examples. When I bought a car , the company policy was that I was eligible for a non taxable Transport allowance, which meant that I should sign a declaration stating that during the month the car was used for official purposes and the amount of allowance claimed was spent for official purposes. It was a printed format and all one needed to do was to put one's name and affix a signature. I refused to sign that paper as no one uses his personal car for official purposes. After a few months the matter was brought to the notice of the business head and one day he called me to his office and tried to convince me that it was not a sin. I held on to my stand and I was prepared to forego the amount . So we need to be honest when we submit our bills for medical reimbursement , - no buying cosmetics and claiming as medicines, travel reimbursement – no claiming 2 A/c when we have travelled in sleeper class. So in all matters concerning us in relation to the organization we need to apply the Kingdom Principle of Honesty and Truth. Of course the matter of Transport Allowance did not end there. In the following year , in the month of Feb the Income Tax department did a scrutiny of records at our corporate office and took objection to this standard format filled by all employees. The company converted Non taxable Transport reimbursement to a taxable transport allowance and I received all my dues as arrears. God vindicates our stand. The second area of honesty is in business areas. We once had a fire in the factory . Many things got destroyed. Later we were to make the insurance claim. So the organization wanted me to include things that were not destroyed and to exaggerate the quantity of destruction. I took a stand that I can only write what was genuinely destroyed in the fire. The organization accepted my stand. So we need to be honest in every report we make , every product we certify, every transaction we undertake and every statement we make. It is tough but we need to keep hanging on the cross and allow Christ to run our life. The second principle I would like to highlight is Pay your taxes. The Biblical principle is very clear , we need to pay our taxes. Both at a personal level and at an organizational level. As I grew in the organization there came a position at which apart from the salary that was paid on paper, another amount was paid in cash for which one need not pay Income Tax. So one day the CEO called me to his office and placed on the table a big cover and said that it contains 50000 rupees. And he explained that due to high level of income tax this amount was paid in cash. I politely told him that I would prefer to pay my Income Tax as per law and I would not like to take this amount. The CEO came over to me and said that he appreciated my stand. He then sent me a nice card stating “let all good things come to you in life in God’s own time.” In the same way in all legal liabilities of the organization we need to ensure compliance if it is under our preview. The 50000 Rupees issue did not end there , but in the next FY the organization stopped paying in cash for higher executives and introduced a special bonus which was taxable. The third principle I would like to share is Work Life Balance. So just because I said Work is a ministry and at work we are serving Christ , if we spend 16 hrs at our office we will definitely not be able to carry out our responsibilities towards our spouse, children, parents/relatives, Church and society. But today I am not going to talk about this imbalance but about the reverse imbalance. Today in the guise of Work – Life balance many, men fail to fulfill their primary responsibility which is to Work – and thereby provide for the needs of the family and for the needs of the society. God instituted that man should work before the fall , only, after the fall it was made painful. Let me share an example. I worked in a continuous process industry – which means the factory works 24/7 , 365 days. In the initial stage of my career I was responsible only for a shift activity which meant just 8 hrs of work . But as I grew in the organization I was paid not for 8 hrs of time spent in the factory but for delivering a product – which included its quantity, quality, price and on time delivery. So if on a Sunday morning there is a breakdown at the factory and I am needed to set things right – I miss Church and I am at the factory working hard to put the machine back into operation. I don’t become very spiritual and say No you should have attended the Church , God would have taken care of the problem at factory. Of course it sounds very spiritual but Our spirituality does not come in performing spiritual activities and in adhering to spiritual disciplines however legitimate they may be. Let us see how Christ would have handled such situation. We see this in Luke 14:1-6 It was a Sabbath and Jesus was surrounded by legalists and spiritualists – the Pharisees. They were waiting to accuse Jesus of being unspiritual. Jesus went ahead and healed the man with dropsy and then He asked them this "If one of you has a son or an ox that falls into a well on the Sabbath day, will you not immediately pull him out?“ An ox stands for the equipment used for ploughing in a farmer’s workplace. And Jesus approves of the farmer’s action during an emergency. Of course if every Sunday there is an emergency then there is something wrong in the way you work. Or if your boss plans the monthly Planning meeting on a Sunday , you need to politely tell him that it is not possible to attend as you have to go to Church. The essence of the matter is this do not hide behind your other responsibilities in not fulfilling your primary responsibility to work. Many of us set priorities , first priority God, second Family third work etc. etc. We base this on the text Seek ye first the Kingdom of God and His Righteouness. Jesus did not continue to say seek second your satisfaction in your family and third your accomplishment in your work. Jesus was not suggesting a set of priorities , but He was giving us only one priority. We need to seek God’ Kingdom and His Righteousness in our work place, seek His righteousness in our relationship with our spouse, His Righteousness in bringing up our Children , His Kingdom and His righteousness in the assembly of God’s people. There is only one priority in all our responsibilities. So do not make work an unspiritual activity – remember you are serving God, you are responsible to God . 9 mins Tot 16
How else do we serve Christ at the place we work . That leads us to the next topic At Work Ministry. As earlier let us find a basis for this in God’s Word. Let us read Philippians Ch1:12-13 The context of this text is as follows: Paul was in prison in Rome . He had been there for considerable amount of time. And from the prison Paul writes this letter to the Church at Philippi .It was not a letter written in desperation requesting the Church at Philippi to pray for his release. No. The theme of this letter is Rejoice. 8 times in these 4 chapters the word rejoice is repeated. In this verse Paul was in effect saying Rejoice brothers God has placed me in this prison for the advancement of the Gospel so that everyone in the whole palace of Ceasar will know that I am here for the cause of Jesus Christ. That is the exact reason why God has also placed us in the place of our work . We work not for our self advancement but for the advancement of the Gospel. When I was in the third of my engineering God placed a burden in my heart for the unreached in North India. My first job was in Bangalore., but I kept waiting on the Lord for an opening in North India. Then I applied for Century Enka in Pune. Against all odds God provided me with the job. I went for a lesser salary than what I was earning in Bangalore. The company then started another unit in Mahad which is a remote place in the Raigad District of Maharashtra. I was just desiring that the company will send me to that unit. One day the production Head called me and asked whether I would accept an offer to work at the Mahad unit. I immediately said yes . He told me to take time, to talk to my wife, as there will be very poor school facility , poor medical facility etc. But I told him , that I don’t need time , I am sure that I can accept that offer. For I knew that it was from God, who was taking me to a place that was unreached by the Gospel. He was taking me so that not only the people in the factory but the whole Mahad Taluka will hear the Gospel. So when you apply for a job or seek a change in job , first commit it to God and let Him guide you to a job where you can serve Him for the advancement of the Gospel. We will look into one more verse. Romans Ch10:14. The Gospel can advance only when the Gospel is preached. So the place where we work is a Mission field . God has placed us there as missionaries for the advancement of the Gospel and we are to preach the Gospel. 3.5 mins Tot 19.5
Now I would like to share some guidelines on how we can minister at work. Number 1. Make the Gospel attractive by personal testimony. Let us read Tit 2:9-10. Our personal life at our work place should be a testimonial that makes the gospel attractive. And that is possible if we consider work as ministry and practice the Kingdom Principles at our workplace. And as we live out the Kingdom principles at our work people will come and ask us why we live the way we live . Then we can share the Gospel at every such opportunity. It is only when you have Christ ruling as Lord from the throne of our heart , will people ask you the reason for the way you live. I give below few examples which can possibly prompt people to ask . Let me tell you something honestly . It is not easy to share the Gospel . When somebody asks me why I don’t drink alcohol, I of course tell them that as Christian I don’t drink alcohol and since I deal with a lot of workmen my drinking will become a stumbling block to them an excuse to become alcoholics and the Bible warns us not to be a stumbling block. But this is not the complete Gospel . There is nothing about Jesus death and resurrection and salvation. May be when it was about not partaking in prasad, I could share with them about the more perfect sacrifice of Jesus. It will be good to take some training on How to share the Gospel and then pray and rely on the Holy Spirit to give us words of Wisdom. 3 mins 22.5
But then you can create opportunities to share the Gospel. This is little easier. We always celebrated Christmas without decorations, without Christmas tree, without new clothes etc. So when my colleagues come home and ask me why I celebrate Christmas without all the external things , it sets up a wonderful opportunity to tell them that Christmas is not about Christmas Tree and decorations but it is about Jesus and then you can share the full Gospel. Invite colleagues who are leaving the organization for a dinner and along with a gift give them the New Testament and then explain what is there in the New Testament . Then you can the share the complete gospel. Still if you find it difficult to share the Gospel invite them for family functions like birthday parties, housewarming ceremony, anniversaries etc. and then invite someone from your Church who can share the gospel message. There can be sometimes sad occasions when the gospel can be shared . My father in law passed away when he visited us at our home in Pune . And to my surprise right from the CEO to the Union leaders a large number of people from my company were at the cemetery . And a dear brother used the opportunity to share the complete Gospel. You can also arrange special meeting . We can in contact with a bro from Rajasthan Pandit. Dharamprakash. He was from a Hindu priestly background who was serving Christ. So since I was working with Birlas and we had a large number of people from Rajasthan, I arranged a meeting in a Hotel and invited all my Rajasthani colleagues and Bro.Dharamprakash shared the Gospel from the Vedas. So be innovative and creative to set up opportunities to share the Gospel. And finally offer to pray for people in need. So we read in Acts The context is – Paul is being taken to Rome as a prisoner. There is a ship wreck . They land up on an island called Malta . Publius who was the chief official of the island takes Paul to his home. And there Paul saw that Pubilius father was sick and Paul offers to pray. In our place of work we will come across many people with various needs . Be sympathetic , visit them at their house and offer to pray . Since I worked in a manufacturing plant I had a large number of workmen and they would absent themselves because of various problems. That provided me with ample opportunity to visit their houses , counsel them and then pray .Even when my CEO was to undergo a by pass surgery my wife and myself went to the hospital read a Psalm and prayed. India being a spiritual nation no one will refuse prayer . And that provides an opportunity to share the Gospel. So God has placed us in a place of work for the advancement of the Gospel . So with our life and with words let us be faithful ministers of God at Work. 4 mins 26.5
We saw how God can be glorified by doing Work as a Ministry and by Ministering at Work. Now we will try to understand our last section After Work Ministry. Let us again try to understand the basis for this from God’s Word. Mathew 28:18 to 20. (The text is addressed to all who have Jesus in them – reigning on the throne of their heart – and to all generations from the first century to last generation that lives at the end of this age. So if Jesus is with you He is Emmanuel to you then this Great Commission is for you.) What is the ministry that God is entrusting to all of us – to make disciples of all nations– not to just preach the Gospel to all nations. And to teach all that the Bible teaches. We cannot make disciples or teach at the place we work so it has to be done after work. That is the number 1 basis for after work ministry . Let us see another basis. Ephesians 2:10 . The context is that in the preceding 9 verses Paul is arguing and showing that Salvation cannot be earned by good works it is a result of God’s grace - a gift that is given and not a prize that you have won . We can’t even say that I am saved because I accepted Jesus into my life or I decided to receive Jesus in my life – Paul says that there is no room for even that amount of boasting. And he sums it up in this verse 10 stating that a new born believer is God’s Workmanship. It is like a potter making a pot .The clay on the ground was not offering itself to the potter saying make a pot out of me . No the clay on the ground was just worthless ,being trampled upon by men, until one day a potter came along and picked up a lump of that worthless clay set it on his wheel and fashioned it into a pot for his use. That is what we are , just worthless sinners under the wrath of God , when one day God came along and picked us up not because we were better than anyone else but because of His grace and made us into a New Creature in Christ Jesus as a vessel useful for the Master’s service to do good works which the Master has prepared in advance for us to do. So God has saved us not because of our good works but He has saved us to do good works. 4mins 30.5
Again I would like to provide a few guidelines that will help you to do ministry after work. Now I have excluded from this your ministry towards your spouse, children , parents/relatives . But they also come under Ministry after work. During my 27 years in corporate life I spent nearly 15 years pastoring a Church . 9 years I pastored a Church at Mahad – we had no fulltime pastors - so the responsibility was very high . And for 7 years I pastored a Church in Pune that consisted of only Blind families – again no full time pastor. That meant a lot of time in preparing sermons, lot of time in counseling families in their troubles, teaching new born believers to grow in the Lord. I was also involved in missions as we were supporters of BYM. And God also brought us into relationship with a Missionary couple who worked about 70 kms away from Mahad. And when we worked with the Blind it meant a lot of social responsibility as they were very very poor and had so many physical needs. Then of course I loved my wife though not perfectly – and together we brought up our children two of them a boy and a girl – being involved in their studies, their sports and their extra curricular activities going for picnics we had a lot of fun. All this with a great responsibility at the factory. Life was really full. All this is possible when our life is a vessel in the hand of God and He uses it for His Glory. So let us start off with the various possibilities. Number 1 local Church Ministry. I will share with you two verses that sums up the purpose of a local Church. First Ephesians 4:11-12 This verse talks of Church as a some sort of preparatory school and that is what a Church is. So we have these bunch of people prophets, evangelists pastors and teachers mature senior believers and they are preparing God’s people – new born believers. So we have some trainers and some getting trained . They are being prepared to go out of the Church and do acts of service which will result in more new believers getting added to the Church and thus the body of Christ is built up. So each one of us have to be in any one of the three roles A trainer in the Church or the one getting trained or the trained who is now out in the world doing acts of service and bringing in new believers. But you may say but my church is not like that . So don’t go hunting for a perfect Church . You will never find it. I grew up in a CSI Church and God in His time brought a dear brother bro. Shantakumar who took permission from the Church Pastor and started a Youth group. He said every Wednesday we will meet for Prayer. The very first Wednesday God took hold of me and I was born into God’s Kingdom . Within a few weeks he told me I have to take a Bible Study . Then he would take us out to villages and take Sunday class for village children . Then for open air preaching hospital visit. We also started going regularly to Madras Central jail and once he made me preach a about 300 under trials. In about 1and half year the training was over and I left for my engineering studies at Annamalai University . And then on it has been a life of service in the Kingdom of God. So we cant sit and complain about our Church we need to be the change agent. So what are the works of service we can be involved in After Work. I have a list here again it is not an exhaustive list you can add more. You can get involved with EU, or Campus Crusade for Christ or Sishya and be involved in students ministry. Which means leading Bible Study groups among students , visiting their hostel conducting camps etc. This can lead to a Open Home Ministry . Invite students to home for lunch or dinner and then disciple them. Then there is the counseling ministry . You can counsel young people – they have so many problems these days – or young couples . You can be involved in children ministry – conducting Sunday schools or VBS. Then there is prison ministry – you can work with various organizations working among prisoners. Or a few of you can team up together and visit some government hospital – go to the AIDS section or to Cancer section and just offer to pray for people . It can lead you to a wonderful ministry. Or again you can team up to do an outreach ministry. When we lived in Mangalore for some time we were part of a Church that had only students. So every Sunday after Church in the evening we would all join together and go to a nearby park and then spilt up two by two and look for someone sitting alone. Then we used to go and sit next to the person and start some small talk and slowly share the gospel. So there are many ways we minister through our Church or through para-Church organizations. 8mins Tot 38
It is very clear we cannot turn a blnid eye to the misery of the people around us. Plug into some work going on in the city among these people . Or team up as a small group and start something. There is a great, great need in this area and we Christians are really not doing anything about it. Christianity is not just attending Church, attending Bible studies and attending prayer meetings. We need to demonstrate God’s love to the world around us. Visit an orphanage . Offer to teach the children . Partner a street children ministry. Go on an evening and spend time with the kids. Visit old age homes . Spend time talking to them . They are lonely people. Ministry among differently abled people. And then depressed people on the streets . Hardly any organisation is working among them. It is a tough ministry. Child trafficking . There are organisations working to rescue minor girls from brothels. Go with them on raids and be involved in recuing young girls . It is a wonderful ministry. We have such an organisation inPune . And we have made ourselves available to go with them on raids as a witness. Ministry among HIV patients. There is a great need here. So we see a whole world hurting out there . And who else is better equipped to serve than we who have received God’s love. 2mins Tot 40
We go on to the next guideline Be involved in cross cultural missions Let us read the verse from Revelations Ch5 ver 9 Jesus was slain and He shed His precious blood so that from every tribe , every language , every people group and every nation we will have people in God’s Kingdom. But after 2000 years there are a large number of people groups who do not have disciples of Jesus Christ. Each one of us need to be involved in this mission . How can you be involved. First Pray .Get hold of mission magazines When I was in college I used to pray with FMPB mission magazine . That is how God put in me a burden for North India . There are other resources. You can visit the Joshua Project web site or you can purchase Operation World Handbook and start praying. Second Your visit. Visit a mission field with your family. See for yourself the ground realities . Then support . Support with money the mission you have prayed for and have seen . Be a partner and not just sending money. You can adopt a mission field or a missionary family. Invite them home for holidays , support their children education. Participate in urban cross cultural mission. In these last days God is bringing the people groups into cities . We have in our cities people from many countries which are closed to the gospel. We have many from hard to reach people groups in India coming to the cities. It is very difficult for many to accept Christ in their home town as they are under the pressure of their community. But in city they have no pressure. And they quickly respond to the Gospel. How are we responding to this move of God. Form a group . Conduct a survey in your city . Pray and ask God to show a particular people group and then start some activity among them and share the Gospel. For example many who come from Iran and other Muslim countries need extra coaching in English . Start a tuition center specifically focused for them .For people from other states , will find it diufficult to learn Kannada . Start a Kannada tution centre for children from other states. One of the most receptive group to the Gospel are the children.
I would like to close with the following verse .That was the reason behind Paul’s extraordinary life. Let this be the reason behind our life as well. Let the love of Christ we have experienced drive us, be the only reason , for us , to live a life for the one who died for us.

Work – Place - Ministry 1. Work As Ministry Basis Ephesians 6:5-7 Servants, respectfully obey your earthly masters but always with an eye to obeying the real master, Christ. Don't just do what you have to do to get by, but work heartily, as Christ's servants doing what God wants you to do . And work with a smile on your face, always keeping in mind that no matter who happens to be giving the orders, you're really serving God.
