Prof. Dr.-Ing Andreas Limper

Harburg-Freudenberger Maschinenbau GmbH
It's unwise to pay too much, but it's
worse to pay too little.
“Let me answer with a
worldly wisdom of
John Ruskin. “It's unwise
to pay too much, but it's
worse to pay too little.
When you pay too much,
you lose a little money –
that is all. When you pay
too little, you sometimes
lose everything, because
the thing you bought was
incapable of doing the thing
it was bought to do. The
common law of business
balance prohibits paying a
little and getting a lot - it
can't be done. If you deal
with the lowest bidder, it is
well to add something for the
risk you run, and if you do
that you will have enough to
pay for something better”
Rakesh Sharma
Director
AMCL Machinery Ltd
“I urge the buyer to understand
Technology source of vendor,
their plant facilities, overall
experience in machinery
manufacturing. This apart they
should review the list of
customers to whom the supplier
has sold their products. When
buying, there will be need for
significant technical data, hence
buy from a vendor who has good
technical staff. You should also
check their certification like ISO/
CE and other quality standards.”

“My input to the buyers regarding machinery selection
would be to evaluate the features that are required by you
for your processes. Please do not beef up the product with
an intention of having all the features whether required
or not. Because every penny counts in the project stage.
Whatever money you put in, requires a return to be paid
to the owners. We have seen customers who use the bare
minimum features for their machines and keep their
investment on machine to the minimum and yet be a
leading player in the tire business.
Hence making of the functional specification is the most
important. Please leave the detailing of the machine to the
machinery manufacturers and demand the performance
parameters. In some cases the project team starts to
specify the design parameters of the machine, which is
best left the Machine manufacturer.
Select a supplier who is flexible and transparent. In the
project situations there are always changes that would
crop up. Hence you need suppliers who are ready to listen
to the tiny requirements of the customer and be ready to
meet the same with open and transparent manner.”

Select a supplier who is
flexible and transparent.
“Purchasing machinery is a major investment. They need
to be evaluated well. Quality comes with a price tag. If
you remove the price, what remains is scrap which will
produce nothing. Buying used equipment from good
suppliers is very important because they will give
working equipment and few companies like us can go a
step further to provide all services to customers under
one roof - from procurement till the consignment reach
their manufacturing unit.”

“Siemens scopes of supply
are automation components
like programmable logic and
motion controllers,
industrial PCs, drives and
motors. Machines of all top
tyre production machine
vendors are equipped with
Siemens components. And
automation at Siemens starts
not at PLC programming but
already at the definition of a
new tyre by our powerful
PLM tools.
Because of the wide-spread
of automation across the
factory it is essential for the
total cost of ownership of a
tyre plant: if there are many
different automation
suppliers combined in one
factory, training and spare
part cost will rise
dramatically. Also it is
difficult to implement new
automation concepts towards
Industry 4.0, because many
different communication
interfaces have to be served -
the nightmare for every MES
manager!
My advice: have a look on the
scope of supply. Does your
automation vendor also
supply PLM and MES to you?
If yes, this could be a very
valuable partnership!”

14. Internal Mixer:
Top 25 Things You Should Know To Discuss With Your Rebuilder
The first step to rebuilding your 'internal
mixer’ is to select the right rebuilder.
(Also check on our portal for ‘17 essential
questions to select the right rebuilder for
your internal mixer’).
After, the mixer is disassembled and
cleaned, a joint inspection (between the
rebuilder and you/your company
representative) should be conducted at
work site.
During this joint inspection, you will need
to take or approve decisions on different
critical components of the mixer. Some of
these could be rebuilt, few repaired, very
few reused as it is and some will have to
be replaced fully.
If you choose your options wisely here,
you avoid being short-changed on the final
scope of work and get the best Return on
your Investment (ROI)......after all you
would not want to pay for something that
you can reuse!
So, what are the 25 key things you should
prepare for discussions on rebuilding your
internal mixer? Lets list them.
1. Chamber (Drilled) Sides - Reuse or
Replace. If the bore is out of tolerance and/or
surface worn out, this component cannot be
reused.
Special Supplement - Rubber Machinery World AUG 2015|
| MACHINERY |
Some of these (critical components)
could be rebuilt, few repaired, very
few reused as it is and some will
have to be replaced fully.
2. Rotors - Reuse or Replace. Some rotors can
be reused by rebuilding the profile if they are
not too old or not excessively worn out of
shape.
3. Rotor End (RE) Plates - Replace. Rarely
can this component be rebuilt.
4. End Frames - Reuse. In most of the mixers,
this component can be reused unless the end
frame casting has cracked.

14
15. 5. Bearings - Reuse or Replace. Rebuilders
will recommend replacement on a
cautionary note, however exceptions are
possible if the bearings are new or not
damaged during disassembly.
6. Dust Stop Assemblies - Replace.
Always replace.
7. Oil injector - Replace. Always
8. Couplings - Reuse.
Because these are long-life components.
9. Door Support - Reuse. In most of the
mixers, this component can be reused
unless there is a crack.
10. Drop Door Shaft - Reuse. In most of
the mixers, this component can be reused
unless excessively worn out.
11. Drop Door (Door Top) - Replace. This
component usually exhibits higher wear
and tear. Hence, unless it is new, usually
recommended for replacement.
12. Latch Assembly - Reuse. In most of
the mixers, this component can be reused
as it is.
13. Linear Actuators - Reuse. Rebuild and
service them after dismantling.
14. Throat Plates - Replace. This component
wears out due to constant contact with
floating weight.
15. Floating Weight (Ram) – Reuse or
Replace. Depending on the condition.
16. Thermocouples – Replace. Always
Special Supplement - Rubber Machinery World AUG 2015|
| MACHINERY |
17.Hopper - Reuse or Replace. Rebuilders will
recommend replacement together with mixer
body. Depending on the condition, this can be
examined for reuse.
18. Hopper Front, Rear & Side Plates - Reuse.
19. Hopper Door - Replace. Always.
20. Piston Rod, Plates & Cup Seals - Replace.
Always.
21. Grease & Oil Lube Assemblies - Replace.
Always.
22. Hydraulic Cylinders - Reuse. Change the
seals.
23. Hardeners & Fasteners - Replace. Always.
24. Seals & Bushes – Replace. Always.
25. Rotary Joints – Replace. Always

16. Initial budget estimates notwithstanding,
these decisions on “Reuse or Repair” that
you take on the components (after
disassembly and joint inspection) impact
the final cost of mixer rebuilding.
