Telco Video Strategy Indonesia Rev1.3

Published on

Caching is back in fashion as half of internet traffic is now video and p2p traffic. ISPs, mobile operators and broadband providers need to look at how to improve QOE of video without having to go through more costly infrastructure upgrades. The way forward is a next generation video (NGV) system

Telco Video Strategy Indonesia Rev1.3

  1. 1. Localizing video caches for mobile operators in Indonesia Presented by Ray @wisepacific.com Contact : marketing@wisepacific.com
  2. 2. Telco : Trends to catch • Today we have an explosion of video devices and services, from YouTube, through mobile video telephony to HD video-on- demand. YouTube is now approximately 10% of global Internet traffic, and in the UK the BBC's iPlayer service is now approximately 15% of all UK Internet traffic. Add in video related traffic from other P2P (peer to peer) services, and well over half the internet traffic today is video related.
  3. 3. Overview, Videos in telco operators environment  CDN players nominate this area.  Problem is that mobile operator or broadband operator cannot monetize or control the videos demand  Increasing traffic due to video but all it does is add on cost of infrastructure
  4. 4. The world data traffic is now a growing videonet, 23% of total by 2012
  5. 5. Internet gone video straining networks infrastructure  State the desired goal  Define the goal in more detail
  6. 6. Mobile data users in indonesia  Total of about 3 million mobile data plans users in Indonesia to hit 5 millions within the next few years  Growth rate of between 80% to 300% among the top 5 players  Poor infrastructure is affecting the ability of operators to grow their revenues  A perfect storm and demand build up for a good video cache strategy to break out from here
  7. 7. Telkom Targets 83% Growth in Broadband Subscribers State-owned PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia on Wednesday said it had targeted an increase of 83 percent in subscribers to Telkom Speedy, its broadband Internet service, to 2.2 million from 1.2 million last year. Source : April 07,2010, JG
  8. 8. Old generation web caches ..  Old web caches solutions not scaling well due to in-line design of web caching.  Efficiency of cache is anything between 30% to max 50%  Lots of $$$ has been sunk into such designs yet not getting the desired performance
  9. 9. Alternative solution needed, a NG video solution A next generation video solution is needed that fulfil the following a. Higher efficiency of caching eg 90% of cache rate b. Reduce latency to improve quality of viewing c. Out of band to improve efficiency of cache and faster implementation time d. Save precious international bandwidth
  10. 10. Potential Alternatives – Next Generaion Video cache
  11. 11. Better quality of Experience meant chance to increase APRU
  12. 12. Recommendation  Next Generation Video (NGV) technology is currently already available  Indonesia operators should look at such alternative to retain subscribers and also path the way to monetize new mobile data plans to generate higher revenues
