  2. 2. You’re right….Physiotherapy includes all those things Here’s a good definition: Physiotherapy is a healthcare profession concerned with human function and movement and maximising potential So can you guess where a physiotherapist might work...?
  3. 3. That’s right – a physiotherapist can work in many places! • Mental Illness • Care of the elderly • Intensive care • Stroke recovery • Occupational health • Sport
  4. 4. We are going to focus on three areas of Physiotherapy. 3) Musculoskeletal 2) Neurology 1) Respiratory
  5. 5. Fact File Name: Amy Winehouse Medical Condition: Diagnosed with emphysema at age 24. This is a respiratory disease that affects the alveoli and the main cause is long term exposure to tobacco smoke.
  6. 6. Fact File Name: Paul Scholes Medical Condition: Diagnosed with asthma when he was 21. It is a condition that causes narrowing of the airways. He has made over 600 appearances for Manchester United, the 4th highest number of appearances by any player for the club
  7. 7. Fact File Name: Gordon Brown Medical Condition: His son has Cystic Fibrosis (a hereditary disease that effects the amount and thickness of mucus the patient produces)
  8. 8. What do you think a Respiratory Physiotherapist does? That’s right! They will look to assess and treat patients with a range of techniques Who do you think they may treat? Respiratory Physiotherapists work with: - Patients who have a build up of mucus - Patients who have difficulties breathing - Patients who have lung problems that affect their ability to move around
  9. 9. Fact File Name: Christopher Reeve Medical Condition: He was the original Superman! He received a spinal cord injury in a riding accident and was paralysed leading to him being in a wheelchair for the rest of his life.
  10. 10. Fact File Name: Muhammad Ali Medical Condition: He is a retired American boxer and three-time World Heavyweight Champion. He developed Parkinson's disease due to the injuries he sustained throughout his career.
  11. 11. So what do you think a Neuro Physiotherapist does? That’s right! So who do you think they see? That’s right! They aim to treat patients who have an injury to their brain or spinal cord Neuro Physiotherapists work with patients who have: Stroke Head injuries Multiple Sclerosis Spinal cord injuries And many more...
  12. 12. Fact File Name: Johnny Wilkinson Medical Condition: An English hero! However since the World cup win he has been injured many times. He has had recurrent shoulder injuries, recurrent knee injuries and groin injuries!
  13. 13. Fact File Name: David Beckham Medical Condition: Just before the World Cup in 2010, he tore his achilles tendon. He needed extensive physiotherapy for several months until it had completely healed.
  14. 14. Fact File Name: Tiger Woods Medical Condition: The professional golfer tore his ACL (Anterior Cruciate Ligament - one of the most common knee injuries seen in athletes) in 2008. He is constantly receiving physiotherapy to reduce the pain.
  15. 15. That’s right! Reduced balance Joint Stiffness Reduced Fitness What do you think a musculoskeletal physio does? They aim to treat patients with a range of muscle, joint and bone problems. Can you think of the problems a musculoskeletal physiotherapist may encounter? Reduced muscle strength

GCSEs •Get 8 GCSEs @ A*- C •You’ll need Maths, English Language and Science @ A or B More study! • 3 A-levels including Biology/Human Biology @ ABB/320 UCAS points Additional science subjects are good BUT General Studies doesn’t count! We also accept •International Baccalaureate •National Diploma (In Science or in Health Studies with A-level Biology) •Advanced Diploma (Health, Society & Development, with A-level Biology) •Access courses, OU courses, degrees – ask us for more details!
