What is TOK?

 1. 1. What is TOK?
 2. 2.

TOK= Theory of Knowledge

 3. 3. “ Defining TOK”

It is neither a philosophy course nor a research course.

TOK is not really a course.

It is an approach to learning involving a “community of knowers.”

 4. 4. It asks students to explore HOW WE KNOW

The program outlines four WAYS OF KNOWING:

PERCEPTION (our senses)

LANGUAGE (verbal, physical, visual, other…)

EMOTION (which can include faith or intuition or belief)

REASONING (not only logical “vertical” thinking)

 5. 5. It also explores WHAT WE KNOW.

The new TOK Subject Guide outlines the following AREAS OF KNOWLEDGE:

The Arts

History

Mathematics

Human Sciences

Natural Sciences

Ethics

 6. 6.

It cannot be taught in isolation.

For TOK to be successful, it needs input from other teachers.

 7. 7. How can you contribute to the success of TOK?

Allow students to ask 2nd order questions about your subject. Try to guide them to find answers.

Example for a science class: “What obstacles did Galileo have to overcome in his revolutionary discoveries about the universe?”

Encourage a sense of wonderment about your subject, how it developed, and its breakthroughs.

 8. 8. TOK in the IB Diploma

In order to receive their diploma, students have to write one essay and do one oral presentation for TOK. They cannot receive their diploma without them.

 9. 9. The essay topics prescribed by the IBO are transdisciplinary in nature and must address “knowledge claims.”

“ To what extent may the subjective nature of perception be regarded as an advantage for artists but an obstacle to be overcome for scientists?”

“ Evaluate the role of intuition in different areas of knowledge.”

“ Are some ways of knowing more likely than others to lead to the truth?

“ Does language play roles of equal importance in different areas of knowledge?”

 10. 10. The oral presentation must address a “knowledge issue” arising from a real life situation.

“Can we be certain that global warming is taking place?”

“What constitutes responsible journalism?

How can we know that scientific conclusions are justified?”

“ What distinguishes a bag of rubbish from a work of art that is made to look like a bag of rubbish? What constitutes a work of art?”

 11. 11. JOIN IN

I would like to invite you to attend the presentations next year. In fact, I would like to invite you to actually give a session on your subject to address 2nd order questions about it (exploring cognitive biases – such as science is always right- and historical context or breakthroughs.

Meanwhile, please look over these handouts and feel free to come in to any of our sessions or to contribute any way you think might be appropriate.
