  1. 1. WELCOME TO THE PROPOSAL PRESENTATION GROUP 4 Ruby Sharma Karishma Khadgi Kabita Acharya Prisha Kc Bhagwati Kalikoty Indu Singh
  3. 3. Introduction Obesity is a major public health problem and becomes an important epidemic in both developed and developing countries since an increase in the risky lifestyles . Obesity is a global problem, affecting an estimated 300 million people worldwide and its prevalence in the recent decade had a rapid increase (178%) . Obesity substantially increases the risk of several major cancers especially postmenopausal breast cancer and endometrial cancer . Moreover, studies indicated that overweigh and obesity are associated with an increase in mortality and a considerable reduction in life expectancy.
  4. 4. Obesity is a multi factorial phenomena and associates with age, gender, ethnicity, levels of leisure time, physical activity, education, parity, economical and marital statuses, smoking habits, alcohol consumption, family history of obesity and dietary habits in both men and women. In compare to men, such determinant factors of obesity were frequently accumulated in women; the findings of several studies have shown that the incidence and the prevalence of obesity in women in many countries are higher than men.
  5. 5. Need of the study  Obesity is the main cause of chronic illness and risk of being obese is incresing in housewives so this study will help to find out the prevalence and contributing factors about obesity so that problems will be addressed.
  6. 6. Significance of the study This study will help to find out the prevalence and contributing factors of obesity among the housewives which will be significant as  it will help the housewives and the other members of the society to adopt healthy lifestyle.  It will help the nation to minimize obesity and thus helps in reducing chronic illness.  It will help different NGO’s and INGO’s working in health sectors to plan a progrramme related to healthy life style.
  7. 7. Objectives  To assess the prevalence of obesity among the housewives.  To identify the contributing factors of obesity among the housewives .  To find out the association between the selected contributing factors and obesity.
  8. 8. Research question  What is the prevalence of obesity among the housewives?  What are the contributing factors of obesity among the housewives?  What is the association between the selected variables and obesity?
  9. 9. Variables  Dependent variables  obesity: BMI(continuous)  Independent variables  age :in completed years(continuous)  number of children: 1,2,3…..discrete Exercise: daily, twice a day, once a week, twice a week.(discrete)  availability of housework assisstance: yes, no…..nominal
  10. 10. Contd….. Economic status: per capita income(continuous) Dietary pattern: frequency of meal per day(discrete) Sleep/rest:(continuous) Education: primary, secondary,higher secondary, bachelors,masters(ordinal) contraceptives: types of contraceptives(nominal)  Watching television: duration in hours(continuous)
  11. 11. Conceptual framework Socio demographic characteristics •Age •Education •Economic status •No of children Obesity Increased risk for chronic diseases Life style •Dietary pattern •Exercise •Housework assistance •Sleep/rest •Contraceptives use •Duration of watching television •General health check up
  12. 12. Chapter II: LITERATURE REVIEW  Body weight alone is not a very sensitive indicator for defining obesity (Atkinson, 1993). Factors such as age, sex, height, lean muscle mass and body fat percentage are all unaccounted for when using weight alone to measure healthy body weight on an individual level. Thus, weight alone should be avoided as a standard for assessing a person’s relative risk for overweight and obesity. Ideal body weight is an unscientific measure, and can provide only an estimate of appropriate weight. A simple way to calculate ideal body weight for women is as follows: 100 lbs for the first 60 in (5 ft) + 5 lbs for every additional inch (Davis & Sherer, 1994, p.292).
  13. 13. Chapter III: Research Methodology  Study design: a descriptive cross sectional study  Study area: Biratnagar metro politan city.  Study population: housewives
  14. 14.  Sampling method: multistage sampling Biratnagar randomization wards randomization house randomization housewife(one housewife again by randomization if more than one)
  15. 15. Contd…..  Sample size: sample size will be determined by literature review and by statistical calculation.  Sampling frame: sampling frame will be obtained from submetropolitan office.  Inclusion criteria: a) housewives between the age group of 30-50 years. b) only the women giving consent and willing to participate will be included.
  16. 16.  Tools and techniques of data collection: semi structured questionnaires will be used. data will be collected by interview and measurement.  Weighing scale and measuring tape will be used to calculate BMI.  Pretesting: pretesting will be done in 10% of the sample size for the feasibility and practicability of the tool.  Reliability: reliability of tool will be done by taking150 sample and calculated by using cronbach’s alpha.
  17. 17.  Validity the content Validity of the research tool for its completeness and clarity will be maintained through literature review and consultation with concerned advisor , subject teacher, guides and experts.
  18. 18. Statistical analysis  Data will be analyzed using statistical package for social science(SPSS) 16.0 version.  Chi squre test and binary logistic regression with categorical variable will be used.
  19. 19. Ethical issues  Formal approval will be obtained from the concerned authorities  Informed verbal consent will be obtained from each respondent before giving the questionnaire  Confidentiality will be maintained throughout the study and will be maintained later.
  20. 20. Delimitations  Sample will be selected only from one city  Housewives between 30-50 years are only included.  Only the selected variables will be studied.
