  • In 2002 EDINA was selected by JISC to host and deliver ten collections of films and video (together with associated materials) that initially made up the Education Media Online service (name changed to FSOL in September 2006). There are c urrently 16 collections available within the service. The collections of film and video were cleared and digitised through the JISC's Managing Agent and Advisory Service (MAAS). The Managing Agent and Advisory Service (MAAS, http://www.bufvc.ac.uk/maas/) was a partnership service of the British Universities Film & Video Council (http://www.bufvc.ac.uk/) and the Open University (http://www.open.ac.uk/). Established by JISC in 2000, wound-up in 2005. MAAS selected the collections after discussion with academicsthen acquired the rights, digitised and catalogued them. Metadata based on Dublin Core standard. In addition, each film and segment is given an ISAN (International Standard AV Number). The ISAN (International Standard Audiovisual Number) is a voluntary numbering system for the identification of audiovisual works . It provides a unique, internationally recognized and permanent reference number for each audiovisual work registered in the ISAN system. The ISAN identifies works, not publications or broadcasts. The ISAN remains the same for an audiovisual work regardless of the various formats in which the work is distributed (e.g. DVD, video recording) or the uses to which it is put. You can get more info. at www.isan.org
  • I mentioned earlier that t here are 16 collections, making up several hundred hours of high-quality material. The films are available for download, either in full or as segments, and can be used freely in learning, teaching and research. Some example collections are listed here, which illustrate the diversity of the collections and the variety of applications e.g. historical, political, anthropological, archaeological, medical, musical, Scottish identity. The Films of Scotland is a diverse collection that will be of interest in a range of subjects e.g. history, literature, art, sociology etc. There’s around 120 films on a variety of subjects that were commissioned to promote Scotland’s culture and industry. Educational and TV Films is a collection of about 150 documentary films covering many major 20 th C events from a Communist perspective. Lots of interesting stuff in there, e.g. reports on the Spanish Civil War, footage of anti-fascist demo in London, propaganda films from China and the Soviet Union. Digital Himalaya is about 100 hours of footage shot by an anthropologist who lived in the Himalayas from the 1930s to the 1980s. As well as Himalyan footage, stuff from Sri Lanka, Egypt, Mexico. Restricted material that only medical departments can access: these are mainly films in the Sheffield Univ. Learning Media unit collection, also one from Healthcare productions and one from St George’s Hospital medical school. Restricted either for patient confidentiality reasons i.e. there are individuals filmed who could not give consent for publication, or because the content is sensitive. List in the Access & Subscription area of the EDINA FSOL pages that details all films that area restricted. Wellcome Film - 212 films were put in to service on 26th February 2009. A further 230+ Wellcome titles will be added in batches in a process due to finish in December 2009.
  • The integrity of the materials must be maintained at all times. No part or parts of the materials in this collection may be used in a context which misrepresents the subject portrayed in the materials. No editing or manipulation of the images contained in this Amber Film Collection is permitted.
