During his service in the U.S. Navy from April 1979 to November 1980, the author was stationed at the U.S. Embassy in Tehran, Iran. At that time, 52 American hostages were held for 444 days by Iranian leader Ayatollah Khomeini, who was then in exile in France. The author affirms that he kept his word regarding negotiations to not attempt a rescue mission, though the reasons would become clear later. He also refers to keeping his word in a 1966 memo sent to the FBI from Puerto Rico.
