This is a contextual design research class project at College for Creative Studies MFA Program. (Team members: Roy KaiSheng Chuang, Xiaoran Yao, Yi Jiang, Colin Pan)
• Conducted the STEEP (Social, Technological, Economic, Environmental and Political) analysis.
• Defined the future scenario of ownership in terms of demographics, Taiwan - China relationship and mineral earth for China from 2022 back to 2012.
2. POPULATION:
1.4 BILLION2022
POPULATION:
1.34 BILLION2012
POPULATION:
700 MILLION2050
Today in 2022, the population of China
has increased to 1.4 billion. Compared
to 20 years ago it has grown
dramatically slow. It is said that in the
near future the total population will be
going down and in the year 2050 the
number of people will shrink to 700
million only, which will be just half of
today.
3. SENIOR CITIZENS :

SENIOR CITIZENS:
210 MILLION2050

30%
As the baby boomers are getting older,
the older people are emerging as a large
group. Today there are 250 million senior
citizens living in China, which is almost
one fifth of the total population of the
country. And according to the estimations,
this number will grow even faster in the
upcoming 30 years, and in 2050 it will stop
growing by the percentage of nearly 30%
of the total.

4. EXPORTING
• RESOURCES
• LABORS
• EXPORTING LOCAL PRODUCT
• STIMULATE DOMESTIC DEMAND
As the aging population was
constantly increasing in last ten years,
the labor of China cannot support its
vast exports of foreign brands
anymore. And it forced the
government started to transfer the
economic structure from exporting
the labor and resources, especially
the rare earth, to exporting the local
product, mainly about the high-tech
products, stimulating the domestic
demand..
LABOR
5. MADE IN CHINA
CREATE IN CHINA
And in 2017, China has basically accomplished the
plan, “from made in China to create in China”. This
had made the economy of China increase more
efficiently.
6. ONE-CHILD POLICY
TWO-CHILD POLICY
Also in 2017, in order to keep the balance of
young and old, instead of the One Child
policy which had been using for more than
thirty years, the Chinese government
adjusted the policy into two children.
7. CHANGING OF
FAMILY STRUCTURE
• HIGHER LIVING EXPANDS
• CHANGING PURCHASING
VALUES
Today in one typical family, there are four
grandparents, a mid-aged couple and plus two
children.
As the dramatic increasing of the economy and the
two child policy, the life of people in China now has
changed a lot. For the average adult has to support
four people in the family. In the household people
purchase more toys, books, nutritions as well as
the health care equipments for senior members.
Now a family with more than one car is not a big
news any more for there are more members in
family too. The stressed living pressure influences
people not to purchase randomly but consider
more about practical, maintenance and durability.
8. • HIGHER URBANIZATION
• GROWING TERTIARY
INDUSTRY
BLURRING
CITY BOUNDARY
For city planning, the government started to invest
in developing the outlying areas of the big cities.
More and more high efficient transportation
facilities have been built, which blurred the
boundary of city and suburb. People living in
countryside have more similar life with the urban
people, and with the better transportation, they
have better chance to travel a lot easier with less
cost. The tertiary industry like travelling is an
important part in people’s lives as well as pushing
the economy going high. Compared to the situation
in 2012, the cities are no longer crowded like the
beehive, but more becoming a center of social and
communication.
9. GDP
30,000 billion dollars
The situation is much better than it was in 2012. The GDP
now has almost reached 30,000 billion dollars which is
two times higher compared to 2012. Now, there is more
budget for the government to invest in social security and
construction of the new type of community that is more
comfortable and environment friendly. Especially, a lot
of communities for senior citizens have been set up with
latest technologies, medical services and the elderly
friendly facilities to relieve the pressure given by the aging
population. Also, much more money has been put in
improving the education, which has made the Chinese
people have a different value compared to the past.
People are more likely to care about the real value of the
products than the price and the brand. In car markets, the
compact vehicle is very popular for its practical
maintenance and efficiency.
10. GUIDING THE STRATEGY
OF COMPANIES
FEMALE
PURCHASING POWER
The female buyers are playing more powerful
role in the market. Compared to before, the
female buyers are more likely to buy the cars
which is specifically customized for them but
not the family sedan. They are now having
more power to make the decision.
11. All these excellent situations are due to the successful transformation of the
Chinese economic structure, which have been already executed since 2012. As the
aging population trend from what we saw ten years ago, the labor population of
China was getting smaller and smaller. The labor could not be the advantage of
China anymore. Therefore, the government started to put a great amount of
money in developing the products of self-directed innovation, especially the high-
tech products which has been the dominance in the global market.
Now China has been one of the most developed countries in the world. The
economy is not mainly supported by the exported products of OEM (original
equipment manufacturer) but the exported products of OBM (original brand
manufacturer) from China and the domestic demand which have much higher
profit. Indeed, this is a strategy which have already been executed in Taiwan ten
years ago. Taiwan is well known for its high-tech manufacturing for several decades
and also have great experiences in transforming from OEM to OBM. Many
Taiwanese own brand companies had already extended their market to Mainland
China. So the successful transformation of the economic structure in China cannot
leave behind the effect from Taiwan.
12. PEACEFUL
AGREEMENT
In 2022, China and Taiwan are under a Peaceful
agreement which is that there are two governments and
two countries under a General Big China. The interaction
of the economy between Taiwan and Mainland China
have been being closely bonded and intimate since 2008
that KMT became the political party in power in Taiwan.
Recalling back to 2008, that was a year the global
financial crisis exploded. Instead of touching the sensitive
national dominion issue between two sides, the
governments started to gradually open the interaction
between Mainland China and Taiwan in these past years.
13. Now, Taiwan and Mainland China has become no
boundary. The direct flight has been opened
since 2008, also the cross-strait bridge and high
speed railway had already built in 2017. The
ownership of the region has totally changed.
NO BOUNDARY
14. ONE-DAY LIVING
COMMUNITY
Taiwan and Mainland China has become a one-day
living community which people are now traveling
round-trip from Shanghai to Taipei in one day.
Therefore, more and more tourists are traveling
between two sides, it is really a great help on
Taiwan’s tertiary industry growing.
15. MAJOR DRIVING FORCE
The Taiwan and Mainland China corporation has not
just stayed in economics and politics, but also
influence various different sectors including
education and technological research. China has
already established itself as a major driving force in
technical innovation and especially in high-tech
related industries. It was mostly contributed to the
natural resources it processed and a series of
technology cooperation between Taiwan and
Mainland China.

16. RARE EARTH MINERAL
China was the largest supplier in global rare earth
mineral. But for a long time the country has never
taken full advantage of that. Private mining was
hampering the resources in a very disorganized way.
This is because the mineral product was mostly
exported as very primitive products. As the stocking
available is declining in a very rapidly pace, China
decide to take action in protecting the resources.
17. LIMITED EXPORT
ELIMINATE EXPORT
Due to the decreasing amount of the mineral
resources, in 2012 China started to limit its export
of rare earth mineral. And in 2017 it started a trade
union of the rare earth minerals. And finally in 2022
China has stopped exporting rare earth mineral
resources to other foreign markets. Another major
factor that contribute to these series of policy
change is the rising demand for renewable energy
solutions. Which force most of the resource goes to
the domestic market.
18. RENEWABLE
TECHNOLOGY
During that period, with the more tightly
economical integration with the Taiwan region,
China gain a major improvement in terms of
technical innovations in the renewable energy
development. With the advantage at hand China
greatly encourage consumers to switch to
alternative energy vehicles and products.
19. LEVERAGE OF
CONSUMERS
As for the export, the country began to shift from
low end pre-processed material to more technical
intensive consumer products. As the number of
eligible workforce is shrinking, the job market also
shifts from labor intensive to more technical
intensive, which leverage individual’s purchasing
power. This in the end also help their ownership of
domestic product.
