Conserving Energy and Going Green Class 4 Gulf Coast Community College Encore - Recycling Quick Facts

 1. 1. Recycling Alternative Fuels Discussion of Clean Coal Joe Boisvert Fall 09 GCCC Encore Instructor – Class 4
 2. 2. Recycling 1. Recycling conserves our valuable natural resources. 2. Recycling saves energy. 3. Recycling saves clean air and clean water. 4. Recycling saves landfill space .
 3. 3.

Each ton of recycled paper can save 17 trees, 380 gallons of oil, three cubic yards of landfill space, 4,000 kilowatts of energy and 7,000 gallons of water! Making recycled paper instead of new paper uses 64 percent less energy and uses 58 percent less water.

 4. 4.

One tree can filter up to 60 pounds of pollutants from the air each year. It takes a 15-year-old tree to produce 700 grocery bags. Where does the trash go? When you throw something "away", it doesn't go away! Trash is either burned, buried, recycled or dumped into rivers and oceans. Disposable diapers last centuries in landfills. An average baby will go through 8,000 of them! Recycling a stack of newspapers just 3 feet high can save one tree.

 5. 5.

Old newspapers can become new newspapers.

Old corrugated boxes can become new corrugated boxes.

Old printing and writing paper can become new printing and writing paper, wrapping paper, and paper used for magazines, books and brochures.

Old scrap paper of all kinds can be used to make new paper towels and tissues, egg cartons, fruit trays and flower pots.

Old grocery bags can become new mail wrappings for magazines and catalogs, new dog food bags as well as new grocery bags.

Old toy boxes or shoe boxes can become new cereal and soap boxes, soft drink cartons and pizza boxes.

 6. 6.

Bunch of old hippies in California ??

Democrats ??

Greenie, granola chewing eco nuts ??

What Your Guess ??

 7. 7.

This website will explain to you why recycling in Panama City is important and how to recycle effectively.

http://articles.directorym.com/Recycling_Panama_City_FL-r615-Panama_City_FL.html

 8. 10.

Advantages / Ability to add lots of electricity with cleaner air and virtually no CO2 emissions.

Ability to produce Hydrogen for Fuel Cells

In the future we will need more and more electricity and still need to reduce CO2.

Disadvantages , Safety remains an issue after Three Mile Island and Chernobel, with current technology low amount of nuclear fuel being converted to electricity.

Major problems remain in handling Nuclear Waste!!!!

 9. 13.

50%

Coal is a dirty 19th century technology, yet it still produces half of our electricity.

 10. 15.

Coal power plants. Coal is the dirtiest fossil fuel, more so than oil and natural gas.

As plug-ins and electric cars hit the road in the coming years, it will be increasingly important to clean up our power plants.

 11. 16.

Zero. None. Industry groups tout “clean coal”, but there are no utility scale power plants that capture their carbon dioxide. Carbon capture is not cost-effective for reducing carbon emissions
