  2. 2. <ul><li>For a germinating seed to develop, the embryo must receive a supply of food for energy. </li></ul><ul><li>The food store is starch, which is not able to be used by the embryo because the molecules are too large to pass into the embryo's cells. </li></ul><ul><li>The starch must be changed into a form which can be used by the embryo. The starch is broken down to maltose by enzyme α-amylase. </li></ul>
  3. 3. <ul><li>Firstly the barley grain absorbs water which softens the seed coat and stimulates the embryo to produce GA. </li></ul><ul><li>The GA passes to the aleurone layer which is a layer of cells found just below the seed coat where it stimulates the cells of the aleurone level to synthesise and secrete the enzyme α-amylase into the endosperm - the food store. </li></ul><ul><li>Here the α-amylase breaks the starch down to sugar (maltose) which is absorbed by the embryo. </li></ul>

  5. 6. Gibberellic Acid <ul><li>Gibberellic Acid is an example of one of the gibberellin family. Gibberellins are a growth substance (hormone), which have a similar affect to auxins apart from they at no point inhibit growth. </li></ul>

Barley Grain Seed <ul><li>In order for a barley grain to germinate it must firstly absorb water which softens the seed coat, and also stimulates the embryo to produce GA. </li></ul><ul><li>The GA passes to the aleurone layer which is found below the seed coat. </li></ul><ul><li>The enzyme α -amylase is secreted into the endosperm where it breaks down the starch into maltose. </li></ul>
  7. 8. Embryo We can use an experiment to show the requirements needed for the barley grain to germinate. Which includes cutting, seperatley the endosperm from the embryo. Setting up four dishes of two endosperms and 2 embryos. One of each adding GA and starch and the other only starch. The results will show that only the endosperm with GA and starch added will digest the starch. cutting
