Power point presentation

  1. 1. Semi-detailed lesson plan in BIOLOGY
  2. 2. OBJECTIVES ➲ Identify the functions of the nervous system ➲ Give the different parts of the nervous system ➲ Appreciate the importance of the nervous
  3. 3. ALL ABOUT NERVOUS SYSTEM ● Nervous system controls and coordinates essential body functions ● Types of nervous system a. cnidarians- network of loosely arrange nerve cells forming a nerve net b. flatworms – rudementary brain with nerve cords c. mammals – have large brains which process information and sense organs located near the brain d. humans – have two parts; the CNS & PNS
  4. 4. CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM ➲ The CNS is composed of the brain and the spinal cord which is protected by skull (bain)and the vertebral column(spinal cord) - it is where the responses received from the sensory receptors are interpreted ➲ Both the brain and the spinal cord are enclosed within three layers of membranes known as the meninges
  5. 5. STRUCTURE OF THE BRAIN
  6. 6. PARTS OF THE BRAIN ➲ Brain stem- controls involuntary action such as heartbeat, breathing swallowing, sneezing, digestion, and action of the blood vessels
  7. 7. Two distinct regions of the brainstem 1. HYPOTHALAMUS- concerned with homeostasis or the steady state physiological condition of the body. It also controls the pituitary gland thereby creating a link beyween the nervous and the endocrine system. - also receives all sensory impulses from the parts of the spinal cord and the brain
  8. 8. 2.THALAMUS ➲ It the most prominent part of the forebrain. It sorts out information coming from all the senses and sends it to the appropriate centers in the brain where it is interpreted.
  9. 9. OTHER COMPONENT OF THE BRAINSTEM ➲ CEREBELLUM- coordinates movement of voluntary muscles and maintains muscle vigor and body balance. ➲ MEDULLA OBLONGATA-control centers for breathing, heart & blood vessel activity, digestion and vomiting, and swallowing ➲ CEREBRUM- receive messages concerning sight, touch, hearing and taste. It also controls movement, intelligence, and behavior
  10. 10. ➲ ➲ SPINAL CORD- receives information from the skin and the muscles and relays it to the brain ● CEREBRUM - receive messages concerning sight, touch, hearing and taste. It also controls movement, ● intelligence, and behavior
  11. 11. Forebrain ➲ The cerebrum is the major component of the forebrain. It is the only part which carries on conscious thought processes.
