  2. 2. A medieval resource <ul><li>Since Medieval times Madrid obtained water that came from the mountains through subterranean canals, from wells and also from the river Manzanares. </li></ul>
  3. 3. DAMS <ul><li>The first dams began to be built in the second half of the 19th century. One example of these dams is “Pontón de la Oliva, built in 1873. </li></ul>
  4. 4. “ PONTÓN DE LA OLIVA” DAM
  5. 5. <ul><li>Nowadays dams are stonger and bigger. </li></ul>
  6. 6. <ul><li>EL CANAL DE ISABEL II </li></ul><ul><li>(Madrid´s most important canal) </li></ul>
  7. 7. ORIGINS <ul><li>It began to be built in 1851 and it was a very complicated engineering work. It is 72 metres long and can hold 57.000 m3. It is situated in the outskirts of the city. </li></ul>

  10. 11. <ul><li>In Madrid there are periods of very little rain. During these periods “El Canal de Isabel II” supplies water to the city by getting it from the aquiferouses on which Madrid lies. </li></ul>

  15. 16. NOWADAYS <ul><li>It is very easy to get water for many of us </li></ul><ul><li>But there are poor people who do not have access to safe, clean water. </li></ul>
  16. 17. Water used for washing <ul><li>There used to be washing places . It was also possible to wash clothes in the river. </li></ul><ul><li>. </li></ul>

  18. 19. Water for personal hygiene <ul><li>Only a priviledged few had water for personal hygiene at home. </li></ul>
  19. 20. <ul><li>In the 19th century most people had to go to the public baths if they wanted to have a bath. </li></ul>
  20. 21. Nowadays a great part of the world´s population do not have water in their houses.
  21. 22. WATER IS LIFE. DON´T WASTE IT. TAKE CARE OF IT.
  22. 23. Water for living <ul><li>Nowadays , in many countries, life without water is much worse than life in Madrid more than two centuries ago. </li></ul>
